2 Important Rules for Safe Operation Safe Use of Equipment Read all the instructions before operating this equipment with particular emphasis to safety precautions. Unplug equipment first before cleaning. A damp cloth can be used to clean the equipment. Do not use liquid / aerosol cleaners or magnetic / static cleaning devices. Do not obstruct the ventilation openings of this equipment to prevent overheating. Plug this equipment into a surge protector to reduce the risk of damage from power surges and lightning strikes. Do not open the cover of this equipment. Contact your cable service provider for servicing questions. Operate this equipment only from an electrical outlet with the correct power source as indicated on the adapter.

3 LED Indicators The front panel of the emta has LED indicators that should be understood before configuration. The below illustration describes each LED indicator. 5 Internet Service Installation Before the emta is operable, you will need to set up an Internet access account with your local cable service provider. Make sure to verify the following Your cable service provider must support two-way, DOCSIS-compatible cable modem access in order for the emta to communicate with your cable service provider s Internet access service. An active RF (radio frequency) coaxial cable connection should be located conveniently near your PC. You will need to have an Internet access account to enable you to receive , access the web, and receive other Internet services. NOTE: Place the emta in a proper location with adequate airflow. Your PC and emta should be placed near your cable input with plenty of space for the cable. emta Installation System Requirements The following lists the minimum hardware and software system requirements necessary for connecting your emta to your PC. Minimum System Requirements for PCs A PC with a Pentium MMX 133 processor or greater 32 MB of RAM CD-ROM drive Web browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape) Minimum System Requirements for Macintosh MAC OS MB of RAM System Requirements for an Ethernet Connection An active 10/100 BaseT Ethernet network card (NIC) installed in your PC

6 emta Installation for High-Speed Data Service The following procedures explain how to set up and configure your emta if you plan to use high-speed data service. 1. Turn your PC off and unplug it from the power source. 2. Connect your PC to the Ethernet port. 3. Insert the AC adapter cord into the power connector on the back of the emta. Then plug the power adapter into an AC power source. 4. Plug in your PC and turn on the power. 5. Connect the telephone port to your home telephone jack or directly plug a telephone into the telephone port. 6. Connect the active RF coaxial cable to the CABLE connector. Note: To add a TV, a DHCT or set-top box, or a VCR, use an optional cable signal splitter. 7. Once connected, the emta will begin an automatic search which may take up to 5 minutes to locate and sign on to the broadband data network. Installation Diagram The following illustration depicts the emta wiring connections.

7 Telephone Service Installation To use your emta for telephone service, you need to contact your local cable service provider. The following should be verified Your cable service provider must support two-way, DOCSIS-compatible cable modem access in order for the emta to communicate with your cable service provider s telephone services. You may be able to transfer your existing telephone numbers to your current cable telephony service provider. If not, then your cable telephony service provider will assign a new telephone number for each current or additional active telephone line. NOTE: Place the emta in a proper location with adequate airflow. Your PC and emta should be placed near your cable input with plenty of space for the cable. Choose a location for the emta that is adjacent to your telephone equipment. Selecting the safest location for your emta will prevent accidental disturbances. Telephone Requirements The following lists the minimum hardware and software system requirements necessary for using your emta for telephone service. Number of Telephone Devices The maximum number of telephone devices (e.g. telephones, fax machines, and analog modems) is limited by the total Ringing Load of the telephone devices that are connected. Each telephone port on the emta can support up to a 5 REN maximum (Ringer Equivalent Number is shown on many telephone devices). Telephone Device Types Telephone devices not marked with a REN number can be used, but the maximum number of attached telephone devices will be inaccurate. If too many telephone devices are attached and the ring signal can no longer be heard, the telephone devices should be removed until the ring signal works properly. Dialing Requirements Only touch-tone phones (not pulse-dial phones) are supported. Telephone Wiring Requirements The maximum distance from the emta to the most distant telephone device is 1000 feet (300 meters). Telephone wiring must be 26-gauge twisted-pair, or larger.

8 emta Installation for Telephone Service The following procedures explain how to set up and configure your emta if you plan to use telephone service. 1. Either a telephone, fax machine, or analog modem can be connected to the RJ-11 port on the emta. 2. Insert the AC power adapter cord into the power connector on the back of the emta, and then plug the power adapter into an AC power source. 3. Connect the active RF coaxial cable to the CABLE connector on the back of the emta. 4. Once connected, the emta begins an automatic search which may take 5 minutes to locate and sign on to the network that provides the telephone service. 5. Verify that there is a dial tone and incoming / outgoing calls are possible.

9 Troubleshooting If your emta does not operate properly, the following should be verified first. If going through this list still results in inoperability, contact your cable service provider. Verify that the plug to the emta is securely plugged in. Verify that the AC adapter is not plugged into an electrical outlet that is controlled by a wall switch. If it is, then make sure that the switch is turned on. Verify that the POWER and ONLINE LED lights on the front panel of the emta are illuminated. Verify that the cables are properly connected with the correct cables. Verify that you have an active cable service which supports two-way service. Verify that you have provided your cable service provider with your emta s serial number and MAC address. If you are using a cable splitter to connect the emta to other devices, remove the splitter and reconnect the cable of the emta directly to the cable input. If this works, then the cable splitter may need to be replaced. Internet Service If an Ethernet connection cannot be registered-- Verify that your computer has a 10/100 BaseT Ethernet card and the Ethernet driver software is properly installed. Telephone Service If a cable connection cannot be registered-- Verify that you are using a standard 75-ohm, RF coaxial cable. If there is no dial tone when the telephone handset is lifted, then verify the following o Verify that your cable telephone service provider has enabled your telephone service. o Verify that your home telephone is wired correctly. A professional may be needed. o Verify that your telephone set is working properly and that a dial tone can be heard.
