For concentration games copy the prefixes and their definitions on colored construction or index paper. Cut into individual cards. Keep the cards in a plastic baggie and store the game and cards together in a file folder or large manila envelope for easy storage. 3 Teacher Guide Games to play! Activities to do!... Flashcard Mania... This is a great game to play whole class. Everyone is practicing number prefixes! flashcards Students play in groups of 2 to 8. The objective is to get the team leader back to the front of the line. Use the flashcards for this great game. Divide your class into 2 lines and name the first person of each line as the leader. A player from each line steps up and the teacher shows a flashcard with a prefix. The first student to give the definition of the prefix wins and goes to the end of their line. The next person in line goes up against the remaining student. The team that has the leader back to the front of the line wins! Send home the flashcards and watch your students practice in order to win tomorrow s game. Know Your Number Prefixes!... Students enjoy playing this number prefix math game! Each student chooses a game piece. Use colored cubes for game pieces. Students roll a die to see who goes first. The highest number goes first. Play will go clockwise from the first player. The person on the player s right chooses a card from the draw pile. That student reads the question on the card to the player. If the player answers the question correctly she gets to roll the die and move her game piece that number of spaces. If the player answers incorrectly, she loses a turn and play goes to the next player. Again the student on the player s right chooses a card to read to the player. Play continues until the first person crosses the finish line. This old favorite keeps students multiplying while sharpening their memory skills. concentration cards Students play in small groups. The objective is to be the player to collect the most cards. Shuffle the word and prefix definition cards and lay them face down in rows. The first player chooses 2 cards at a time, looking for a word card and its prefix definition that s a match. When a player chooses a matching set of cards, she/he collects the cards and takes another turn. If a student chooses 2 cards that don t match it is the next person s turn. The winner is the player with the most cards at the end of the game. Homework & Assessment... These great ideas involve parents in their children s education. Use this great assessment with your students! Make up extra copies of any of the games. Send them home with your students to practice with mom and dad. This is a fun way to make sure your students are practicing math at home. Make each student a copy of the Concentration Cards, words and definitions.
