1 Apicius - The Culinary Institute of Florence Application
2 Your application will be processed once the following items are received: Procedure page 1 1) Payment of Fees and Tuition deposit (50% of tuition). 2) Payment of Housing Security Deposit (only if requesting housing). 3) Transcript, CV, or statement of prior experience in culinary arts (if applying for intermediate or advanced levels only). If you are enrolling for more than one term, fees and deposits for ALL terms must be paid at the time of application. A separate housing security deposit must be paid for each term (refundable at the end of that term). The balance of tuition is due on the Application Deadline date (below). Rent payment is due in full August 1 for Fall semester, December 1 for Spring semester and 30 days in advance of a Summer Session. Rent payment will be due prior to receiving your housing assignment. Please note that your application and/or housing request may be withdrawn if payments are not received by the due date. Requirements: Students must be 18 years of age. Students applying for Intermediate or Advanced level courses must provide a transcript or certificate demonstrating at least one semester of Culinary Arts course work, or one year of experience in food preparation. Master applicants are required to hold a degree in Hospitality Management and /or demonstrate 3 years of experience in food preparation. Housing: Housing assignments are sent by and post at least 2 weeks before the term begins. Rent payment will be due prior to receiving your housing assignment. If you plan to make your own arrangements, you are not required to pay a Housing Security Deposit. Payment: Payment in full of tuition and fees must be received by our office before a letter of enrollment will be issued. This applies to all programs including the Master program for which the full one-year tuition must be paid. Students who are undecided about enrolling in multiple terms should note that it is possible to extend their program after arrival in Florence however they will likely be required to return to their country of residence in order to renew their student visa. Costs may be combined in one check, made payable to Study Abroad Italy and sent to the office in California. All payments, including wire transfers, should list the applicant's name. A copy of your wiring instructions must be faxed to our office before we can process your application. NOTE: Costs are subject to change at any time, due to fluctuation of euro/dollar exchange rate. Application, Tuition and Fees Deadline: Fall Semester: July 1 Spring Semester: November 1 Summer Sessions: 60 days prior to start date Rent Payment Deadline: Fall Semester: July 15 Spring Semester: December 1 Summer Sessions: 45 days prior to start date Late applications are accepted if space is available and should include payment of late fee. Applicants from Affiliated Universities: Students from SAI Affiliated schools should discuss their plans with the study abroad office at their home school. Some affiliate schools require students to pay all fees directly to SAI; others require students to pay their home institution fees and the school will then cover the cost of their study abroad program; and still others require students to pay certain fees and their home institution will pay the others. Be sure to discuss this with your study abroad Advisor in order to be clear about the procedure your school uses in their affiliation with Study Abroad Italy. Affiliate students will receive credit for their courses in Italy from their home institution. It is the student s responsibility to insure that credits will transfer. If you are uncertain about your college or university s affiliation with Study Abroad Italy, drop by your study abroad office to discuss it with an Advisor. Airline Travel: Study Abroad Italy has arranged for students to receive the lowest possible student airfares through Waldorf Travel Service. The agency is familiar with our student requirements, stays informed of our arrival and departure dates and can be reached at Be sure to tell them you are a Study Abroad Italy student. We strongly recommend purchasing airline tickets at least 120 days prior to departure or you will find fewer seats available, and at a higher price. Student Visas: All students must obtain a student visa. Upon acceptance SAI will send you the application procedures for your student visa. It is very important that you start this process as soon as you are enrolled in the program, as the procedure will take time. For many Italian Consulates, SAI is able to handle the visa processing for you and the fee for this service can be found on the cost page. Students not residing in the US should contact the nearest Italian Consulate, following thief directions for obtaining a student visa. Scholarships: SAI awards a number tuition scholarships for its programs in Italy. Contact our California office for information. Insurance: All students are required to purchase the student national health plan (Assitalia) upon arrival in Italy (approx $80/semester). In addition, SAI students are automatically enrolled in Basic Emergency Travel Assistance (BETA) free of charge, providing evacuation, repatriation and other emergency medical assistance. You will receive BETA information before departure. Cancellation and Refunds: Orientation day is considered the start of the term. The housing security deposit is not refundable after June 15 for Fall semester, after October 15 for Spring semester, and 60 days or less before the start of a Summer Session. Rent payments are refundable up to 45 days before the start of a term. After that day the student is responsible for 100% of the rent. Students enrolling in one-year and/or multiple sessions must cancel their enrollment prior to the the start of the first term, in order to receive a refund. Those students will otherwise be liable for 100% of tuition and fees for both terms. Tuition liability, for all programs, is based on the date on which a formal cancellation request is received in writing. If a cancellation notice is received: days prior to the start of a term the student is liable for 15% of the full tuition cost days prior to the start of a term the student is liable for 50% of the full tuition cost. 7 days or less prior to the start of a term the student is liable for 100% of tuition.
