Financial Aid- FAQ s How and when do I apply for financial aid? First, you will need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on line at or by filling out a hard copy of the application. Make sure to include the Florida State University school code: It is recommended to fill out and submit the FAFSA application to the federal processor as early as possible, since the Florida State University awards financial aid on a first come first serve basis. Check with other institutions you may be considering, to make sure they don t have any priority deadlines for FAFSA. For the online application to be processed, it usually takes around 2-4 weeks, and for the paper application, it takes about 4-8 weeks to be processed. It is strongly recommended to use the online application. After the university receives the online results from the federal processor, they will send you a request for any additional documentation needed. Do I have to wait until I am admitted before I apply for financial aid?
5 Students do not have to wait on confirmation of admission to the university before filing the FAFSA; however, financial aid offers will only be made after admission to the university. Students do not have to be admitted to ANY institution before applying for financial aid. If my parents are divorced, widowed, or separated, whose financial data should be used when completing the FAFSA? If your natural parents are divorced, use the natural parent which whom you lived with the most in the past 12 months. If you lived with neither of your parents, or shared an equal number of days living with each parent, the parent that provided the most financial support should be the one whose data you should use to complete FAFSA. If your parents are separated, and their divorce is still in progress, make an appointment with a financial aid counselor to discuss your options. If my parents don t claim me on their tax return and don t give me any money, can I file as an Independent? If you are able to answer YES to any of the following questions on the FAFSA, you are considered independent for financial aid purposes: Were you born before January 1, 1981? Will you be working on a master s or doctorate program during the school year? Are you married? Do you have children who receive more than half of their support from you? Do you have dependents (other than children or a spouse) who live with you and who receive more than half of their support from you? Are you an orphan or ward of the court, or were you a ward of the court until age 18? Are you a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces? If you CANNOT answer YES to any of these questions, yet have other extenuating circumstances, please make an appointment to meet with your financial aid counselor. I have already filed my FAFSA. Why haven t I received a financial aid award package from the Florida State University? First, make sure that the university is listed on your Student Aid Report (SAR). If the Florida State University is not listed on the SAR, call
6 FED-AID to ask the federal processor to add our school code, You will need the DRN number, which can be found on the first page of the SAR, in order to do the update by phone. If the Florida State University is listed on your SAR AND you have been admitted to the university, make sure you have submitted all documents that have been requested by the Department of Student Financial Aid. You can check the status of your financial aid online at: or you can call our department at (850) between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Monday through Friday. What if my parents or I will not be earning the income that we did in the previous year? If any of the following circumstances apply to you or your family, make an appointment to meet with your financial aid counselor: Loss of employment of parent or spouse Loss of other income or benefits (i.e. Social Security or child support) by you or your parents Divorce of parent or spouse Death of parent or spouse How is my financial need determined? The federal processor uses the information you provide on your FAFSA to calculate an Expected Family Contribution (EFC), which determines your individual family s ability to contribute to the cost of education. The Department of Student Financial Aid subtracts your EFC from the calculated cost of attendance (COA), after receiving your FAFSA from the federal processor. The COA includes: estimates for the academic year for tuition/fees, computer costs, books/supplies, housing, meals, transportation, and miscellaneous expenses. COA EFC = FINANCIAL NEED How do I change the information I already submitted on my Student Data Form? If you have already submitted your Student Data Form, you must resubmit the form in its entirety, in order to make a change to any of that information previously submitted.
7 How do I change the information I already submitted on my Summer Supplement? If you previously submitted your Summer Supplement and need to make a change to the number of credit hours you will be attending or the session in which you will be taking the hours in, then please contact our department: 850/ If I am not eligible for need-based aid, is there anything else available? YES. Students with no established financial need are still eligible to apply for Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loans. Students may also apply for an Alternative Student Loan. A student s parent/parents may apply for a Federal Parent Loan (PLUS). You can view more information on FAFSA s website. I only want a loan. Do I have to file a FAFSA? Yes. The FAFSA is the backbone of determining what type of loan you are eligible to apply for; however, there are Alternative Student Loans that do not require the FAFSA information. All students are encouraged to complete the FAFSA so that we can determine what type of loan would be in your best interest. The Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Loan has more advantageous terms and conditions than alternative loans. What scholarships can I apply for at the Florida State University? The Office of Admissions automatically considers accepted freshmen for academic merit-based scholarships. A separate application is not required. Scholarships are awarded based on academic merit (combination of grades and test scores). University Freshman Scholarship A $9,600 scholarship distributed over four years. Recipients are selected from the best freshman students admitted to the University based upon high school grades and test scores. Tuition Reduction Scholarship (Waiver) Awarded to a limited number of Non-Florida freshmen based on academic merit or special talent. The total amount of this award is a 50% reduction (waiver) of the out-of-state portion of the tuition (approximately $7,222 based on 30 semester hours for the academic year). The waiver amount is only applied to tuition and does not include other fees, nor does it apply towards study-abroad programs. For information about tuition costs, click here.
