1 Application & Instructions Summer 2014 Application Deadline: February 14, 2014 The Berklee College of Music Summer Internship Program in LA is an internship-based program that provides students an opportunity to gain professional experience in their chosen field AND have furnished housing arranged and reserved. All internships take place in Los Angeles. Interns have the option of enrolling in a 2-credit internship course, requiring a minimum of 140 on-site internship hours or a 6-credit internship course, requiring a minimum of 300 on-site internship hours. Furnished student housing in Park LaBrea is provided. PLEASE NOTE: The location of the housing may change as Berklee College of Music is currently in discussions with Emerson College regarding possible housing at their new Los Angeles Campus. Applicants will be notified should this occur. Orientation sessions at Berklee and in LA are required. Internship site placement is limited to situations approved by the Office of Experiential Learning. Note: Equivalent credit for prior experience is not available due to the requirement of concurrent contract between the employer/supervisor and the college. Program Eligibility 5 th semester standing or completion of 50 Berklee credits. Good academic standing (3.0 GPA in major, 2.5 overall GPA). Good judicial and financial standing at Berklee, with no unresolved issues at the start date of semester in LA. Course Offerings Students choose between the 2-credit internship (IN-492) or the 6-credit internship (IN-497). Weekly industry workshops are included for both courses. Application Information The OEL will accept and review applications on a rolling basis up to two semesters in advance. Students are eligible to apply for the Summer 2014 program any time between November 2013 and February 14, The sooner a student applies, the sooner they will be able to begin applying for internships and planning for relocation to LA. Complete the following forms in the Application Packet and submit them to the with other application materials. Incomplete applications will not be considered for review. 1) General Information Form 2) Consent Form If a parent or guardian will be responsible for financing the student s participation in the program, the applicant must obtain said parent or guardian s signature in addition to the applicant s. 3) International Student Verification Form International students must complete this form with their international advisor and submit it with their application. 1
2 Submit the Following Additional Materials with Your Application: 1) Current Resume 2) Current Transcript Unofficial copies of transcripts can be obtained from the Registrar s Office or at my.berklee.edu 3) Two Letters of Recommendation OR a typed list of Three References (with contact information) At least one recommendation letter or reference should be from a Berklee faculty member that teaches courses in the student s Major, the second/third recommendation letter/references may be academic or professional. The Letters of Recommendation must come to us in an envelope sealed and signed over the seal by the author of the letter. 4) Personal Essay Applications must include an essay (3 pages maximum, double spaced) in which the applicant discusses the Berklee Internship Program in LA and the internship experience in relation to the student s academic and career goals. Pages should be numbered and the student s name should be at the top of each page. It is expected that essays will be proofread for grammar and spelling. IMPORTANT: Incomplete applications will not be considered for review! Complete applications should be submitted to the. Program Selection Selection Criteria Representatives from the OEL will review application materials and interview all qualified candidates in person. Program acceptance is based on the following criteria: Notification 1) How clearly the candidate demonstrates that an internship will enhance their academic and career goals. 2) Recommendations from professional and personal references, as well as feedback from the student s major Chair. 3) GPA and overall judicial standing with the college. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the application deadline. Applications are reviewed as soon as possible and once an acceptance decision is made, a letter will be sent to the local mailing address provided for us on the application. Financial Information Tuition, Housing Costs, and Fees (Tuition and Fees are subject to change) Summer 2014 LA Internship Program Deposit (see note 1) $ 500 LA Internship Program Tuition (see note 2) $ TBD Total Housing fee (see note 3) $ 4,000 Comprehensive Fee (see note 4) $ 500 Health Insurance (see note 5) TBD (1) Deposit is deducted from remaining costs and fees for the semester of accepted enrollment. If a student withdraws from the program after being accepted and registered in the program, the deposit is forfeited. (2) Tuition is the same for the Summer Internship Program as the equivalent number of credits on campus in Boston. Students will be charged by the credit for the internship course in which they are enrolled. (3) Housing fee does not include meals. The fee does include furniture and utilities. See sliding scale for housing charges below, should student withdraw from the program. 2
3 (4) Cost of additional curricular and non-curricular student services. (5) Required of students not submitting a health insurance waiver to the Bursar s Office. Understanding the Program Costs Participants will register for the internship course they select. Student bills will reflect an overall program fee that covers housing, tuition and other fees (see cost breakdown above). Once accepted, students are required to submit a $500 deposit to hold a space in the program. Please note that Berklee signs a housing contract based on the number of students that commit to participating in the Summer Internship Program in LA during a specific semester. Unlike other courses that may be added and dropped from a student s schedule until the end of the add/drop period, once a student has signed and submitted the form that is mailed to ACCEPTED students and then submitted to the Office of Experiential Learning, at that point the student has committed to participating in the program. If a participant changes his/her mind after that time and decides to participate in a later semester or drop out of the program all together, they will be charged a fee for the housing space. The information regarding the fee structure is outlined below. Note: Completing an initial application for the Summer Internship Program in LA is not a guarantee of acceptance, nor does it bind you to participate in the program. Charges for students dropping out of program or deferring to a later semester (after submitting signed form included in acceptance packet committing to participating during a specific semester): Up to 90 days before the first day of Check In forfeit $500 deposit Between 90 days and 60 days before first day of Check In forfeit $500 deposit plus additional $500 charge Between 60 days and 30 days before first day of Check In forfeit $500 deposit plus additional $1,000 charge Between 30 days and the first day of Check In forfeit $500 deposit plus additional $2,000 charge As of the first day of Check In forfeit $500 deposit plus additional charge of entire amount of housing cost for the semester Tuition The tuition fees will cover tuition for the internship course. Tuition rates are the same as they would be on campus in Boston. Medical Insurance As with any other semester, you must complete a Health Insurance Waiver, which must be submitted to the Registrar s Office documenting that you have medical insurance coverage from an outside provided. If this waiver is not provided to Berklee College of Music by the school s deadline, you will be charged an additional fee for Berklee s health insurance package. Additional Costs The costs of transportation to and from LA, transportation in LA, meals, laundry, and personal items are the responsibility of the student and not included in the program cost. 3
4 Logistics Internships Internships are available in all areas of the music industry in LA. The will assist in securing an internship in LA. While participating in this program, students are required to intern for the duration of the time they are in LA and complete a minimum of 140 hours (IN-492) or 300 hours (IN-497). Although some students will secure an internship prior to their arrival in LA, many will interview in person in LA and secure the internship upon arrival. This is normal. However, students must begin applying for internships through the Office of Experiential Learning as soon as they are accepted into the program while still in Boston. The internship courses include both a work and academic component. More details about the academic requirements of the internship will be provided at orientation. Students enrolled in an LA Internship course (IN- 492 OR IN-497) earn a grade (A-F) just like in any other Berklee course. Registration Procedure Students accepted into the program will be asked to submit a $500 program deposit to hold a spot in the program and fill out a form confirming their attendance in the program. Once a participant submits their deposit and returns the form to the, we will enter registration waivers so that the student may register for the internship course during Berklee s registration period. This registration will trigger automatic billing for the entire program cost: tuition, housing, and other fees. Housing Students attending the Berklee College of Music Summer Internship Program in LA are required to live in the Park LaBrea housing complex, located at 6200 West Third Street, Los Angeles, CA * Each student will be sharing (usually with three other students) a fully furnished two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment with a full kitchen. Linen, kitchen supplies, utilities (excluding phone, cable and internet), as well as other accessories are included in the housing package. For specifics, please see the Park LaBrea Housewares Package sheet, which will be included in the information given to participants upon acceptance. Support While in LA The is available as a resource to participants throughout the duration of the program. Berklee s Assistant Director, Alumni Affairs, Justine Taormino, is available to assist students on the ground in LA. Justine plans and oversees the weekly professional workshops and field trips that are an academic requirement of the internship courses. Park LaBrea also employs an exceptional staff that is there to help with any maintenance needs that may occur in the apartments. *A Housing Waiver Petition form is available for students who are either 24 years or older, has a parent/guardian that lives in Los Angeles County, or has a disability that requires accommodations that Park LaBrea is not able to provide. See the for more details and to obtain a petition form to submit with the program application. Completing the Housing Waiver Petition is not a guarantee of housing waiver. Each situation will be evaluated on an individual basis and the candidate will be notified of the decision at the time of program acceptance. Curricular Practical Training: Student is eligible to participate in IN-492 (2-credit LA internship) or IN-497 (6- credit LA internship) during the Summer 2014 semester. IN-492 or IN-497 must count toward General Elective requirements. The student understands he/she must obtain authorization for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) on page 3 of their I-20 from the Counseling and Advising Center PRIOR to beginning an internship. The student must bring to or confirm receipt of the following items by the C&AC at least one week prior to the start date of internship: 1. Internship Verification Form issued by. 2. Letter on letterhead from internship site including start/end dates, number of hours per week, internship location (complete address) and job description. 3. Copy of I-94 (front). A new I-20 with authorization on page 3 will be issued. Student must have I-20 in hand prior to beginning internship. Students may have their SEVIS record terminated if they begin an internship prior to obtaining authorization. Optional Practical Training: Student has no General Elective requirements remaining but may participate in IN-492 (2-credit LA internship) or IN-497 (6-credit LA Internship) during the Summer 2014 semester, if they apply for and are granted, Optional Practical Training (work authorization) from the Department of Homeland Security. Student must provide proof of employment authorization to their International Advisor in the Counseling and Advising Center prior to beginning internship. Students who begin an internship without submitting proof of employment authorization will have their SEVIS record immediately terminated for "unauthorized employment.
