Our school newsletters and calendars are located on our website (see below). If you do not have access to a computer, please advise your classroom teacher and arrangements will be made to have a hardcopy sent home. Please make sure we have your address. Our website and newsletters are our best form of communication. It is very important that we have complete and accurate information for every student. ROUTINES FOR DISMISSAL OF STUDENTS We accept telephone requests to change or alter a child s dismissal routing up until 2:30 p.m. All changes should be communicated to the school secretary either by a phone message, or a note to the teacher that could be sent to the office. Parents who are picking up their children at the end of the day are asked to wait on the city sidewalk all students will exit via the office doors. If you have a relative or friend who occasionally picks up your child, please send a note to your child s teacher with their names. Thank you for your assistance as the staff at Westmount works towards ways of keeping the children safe. If your child does not have a note regarding a pick up he/she will be put on the bus. Do not park in the bus loading zone.

THIS MONTH S HIGHLIGHTS Sept. 2 - Labour Day NO SCHOOL Sept. 3 PA DAY NO SCHOOL Sept. 4 First Day of School no early dismissal Sept. 12 Stand Up to Bullying Wear Pink Sept School Council Elections 6:00 to 7:00p.m. Sept Terry Fox Walk donate a toonie; Open House & BBQ 5:00 to 7:00 pm EVERY WEDNESDAY UNTIL THE END OF JUNE IS GARBAGELESS LUNCH DAYS All schools in Ontario must follow the School Food & Beverage Policy guidelines which determines food choices sold by the school. Food that surpasses the fat percentage and sodium percentage will not be sold to our students REMINDERS TO STUDENTS Pizza Order form Publicity Permission form WHAT IS BALANCED DAY? Students have 2 45 minute breaks during the day first one is 10:10 to 10:50 which is time for a nutritional snack. Fruits and vegetables are always a welcome snack. The second break is at 12:30 to 1:10 where they have their lunch. We find it is better to pack too much food than not enough. Make sure it is items that can easily be returned home. Please pack enough for your child for both lunches and explain which items they eat first. Don t forget those utensils. Although thermos keep their food warm, they are also hard for the little ones to open. Students do not have access to a microwave. Westmount is a nut controlled school so please do not send any nut products to school. If your child has any anaphlaxic conditions, please inform the classroom teacher and principal. Forms will need to be filled out. REMINDERS TO PARENTS Your child will need the following supplies this year: 1. backpack 2. non marking indoor running shoes (no high heeled runners) 3. 1 box of pencils 4. erasers 5. ruler 6. glue stick 7. lunch box Please make sure all items are labelled. EXTRA CLOTHING Please be sure to send a set of clothing that can stay at the school for those little accidents. Place the clothing in a ziplock bag with your child s name on it and please, label all items. Even the older students sometimes may get wet while playing outside and it is very uncomfortable to sit in wet clothing all day. We have an ongoing fundraiser with Oliver s Labels. Please help us return your child s belongings by labelling everything.

3 WESTMOUNT AVE. P.S. Page 3 ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY Punctuality and attendance are very important in a child s learning. The Rainbow Board has a policy that if a child is late or absent more than 15 days, a letter will be sent to our Attendance Councillor Laurie Bell. Upon receiving these letters, she may or may not contact you to see if she can offer you some assistance. Our school day begins at 8:30 and ends at 2:50. Even 5 minutes can make a difference in a child s learning skills. Please try to be on time, try to schedule appointments during PA days or after school hours. If you are picking your child up for an appointment, please try to do it before 12:30 or after 1:15 so as not to interrupt their lunch time. SCHOOL & HOME COMMUNICATIONS ABSENCES Although you have sent a note in your child s agenda regarding an absence, it doesn t always make it to the office so please follow through with a call to the office to avoid that safe arrival call. Our answering machine is always on. Remember, when leaving a message regarding your child s absence, we need a reason as to why he/she will be absent or late. Arriving late! Please come into the office and sign your child in. Students will not be let in the parking lot doors once the second bell (8:30) has rung. Please contact your child s teacher for any discrepancies that may have occurred over the school day. There are always 2 sides to a story! Make sure to ask your child what role he or she took in the situation and ask what mistake he or she may have made in that circumstance. We recommend that you communicate with the classroom teacher prior to contacting the principal. Please call the school and our secretary will have the teacher call you to arrange an appointment, as setting aside time will result in a successful uninterrupted meeting. We attempt to ensure that information sent from school to the home is done in a timely manner. Our calendars are updated regularly and the newsletters are available on the website (westmount.rainbowschools.ca) by the first of each month. If you do not have access to the website, please advise your child s teacher so we can send you a hard copy. Please use your child s agenda to communicate any changes in bussing or pickups. STAND UP TO BULLYING On Sept.12, province wide, all students and staff are asked to wear PINK to stand up to bullying. Let s do our part by putting on our best pink outfit that day. OUR DRESS CODE Hats to be removed when entering the building Covered shoulders Covered torsos Appropriate footwear (comfortable & safe) No inappropriate language or logos on clothing Clean clothing in good repair Arm holes need to be snug to the body and not cut too low Shorts/skirts & dresses to be mid-thigh (finger tip) or longer Thank you for having your children respect our dress code. Only running shoes can be worn on the play structure and in the gym. NO HIGHHEALED RUNNING SHOES OR FLIPFLOPS! The following list of Character Traits will be the Rainbow District School Boards focus this year: Honesty; Respect; Empathy; Responsibility; Integrity; Courtesy; Resilience; Acceptance; Courage; Co-operation

4 WESTMOUNT AVE. P.S. Page 4 REVISED KEEP IN TOUCH Gisele LaLonde Principal Phone: Fax: BUSSING Consistency in bussing or picking your child up is a major factor in ensuring your child s safety. When a child occasionally rides the bus, not only is it confusing for the school, and for the driver as well to get to know your child. Please help us in only taking your child off the bus if you have an appointment you must attend to. For Transportation Concerns STUDENT AGENDAS Student agendas are an excellent means of daily communication between the home and the school. We ask that you review and sign the agenda daily. The agendas contain an insert at the front which outlines the World Class School s Expectations for students, teachers, parents and the new character traits, etc. The homework policy is outlined in this insert, also. Always check the front pouch of the agenda. Remind students to empty their agendas and backpacks when they arrive at school, it is not up to the teacher to remove notes. Please remind your child they should not remove any notes placed in agendas until they get home. There is no charge for agendas. DOWN THE ROAD Oct. 21 School Photos with retakes on Nov. 12 Report Cards go home on Nov. 5; Feb 19; June 27 Parent Teacher Interviews Nov. 6 & Feb. 19; (info will be in your child s agenda). Please return the nomination forms with your child by Tuesday, Sept. 24 th. Please call the Sudbury Student Consortium at for any bus changes, phone numbers or lost items. The first month of school is a busy one and no changes will be made after the first two weeks of school. Bus drivers or the school can not make changes. All JK & SK s have bus tags on their schoolbags, please do not remove these tags. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE FOLLOWING!
