2 Adult Education Highlights for 2012/13 Welcome to the East Riding of Yorkshire Council Adult Education service and our course guide for 2012/13. We are proud to offer a wide range of learning opportunities across our great and diverse county and look forward to seeing you in our classes over the coming academic year. Our aim: to be a responsive service, able to work closely with partners to offer what is needed in our communities with high quality and great value for money. Did you know? Across the East Riding we have continued to introduce and develop Work Skills Clubs in partnership with Jobcentre Plus to provide skills improvement and employability support to the unemployed. In fact many of our courses provide learners with the vital skills and self-confidence needed to be work ready or to make that career change they may be thinking about. We continue to be a leading provider in the delivery of courses aimed at improving English and Maths and in response to recent Government legislation we have introduced a range of English and Maths Functional Skills courses to replace our highly successful Adult Literacy and Numeracy Certificates for the next academic year. We also deliver a range of Awards and Certificates in Business and Administration, Team Leading and Management to support people to develop who work or volunteer in these areas. There are a wide range of creative and language courses for you to choose from at venues across the county. We are offering a range of new courses this year, including Equality and Diversity Certificate Level 2 in Hornsea and South Holderness; Advice and Guidance Certificate Level 3 in Cottingham, Goole, Pocklington and South Holderness; and Youth Work Practice Certificate at Level 2 in Cottingham, Driffield and South Holderness. We continue to successfully deliver a broad offer of GCSEs including Maths, English, Biology, Physics, Psychology & Human Health and Physiology. If you enjoy learning as a family, then we have many courses across the East Riding where you and your child can learn together, as well as a host of special holiday courses to keep your children happy over the Summer break. Our new purpose built centres in Bridlington and Cottingham can also provide an excellent venue for your conference as well as being great places to learn. We are pleased for this year to be introducing Apprenticeship training programmes for young people and adults. These frameworks will provide off the job training, on the job assessment and a range of accredited qualifications for those looking to work in a particular sector or for those adults looking to progress within their chosen careers. Success for our learners: information, advice and guidance We will: offer free, impartial and confidential advice about education, employment and training to help you make the right choice of career, course or training opportunities support you to develop skills and qualifications build your confidence, motivation and self-esteem quickly and effectively identify your learning support needs support you throughout your learning with us, such as assisting you to set and monitor personal and individualised goals refer you to one of our specialist IAG staff or signpost you to a suitable alternative provider. Where appropriate, we will provide: in class Learning Mentor support assessment by specialists for specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia note takers, readers and signers assistive equipment and technologies a plan of action to help you achieve your aims, such as, writing your CV, improving your interview skills and understand the job market. Costing the The cost of the course appears in the left hand column. For both accredited and non-accredited courses there are two possible fees; full or free, depending on fee waivers. The cost of accreditation appears at the end. Please note, due to funding regulations all non-accredited courses are for 19+ only, unless those aged are willing to pay a full-cost fee. Learner Support If you are concerned about affording your adult education course, please note you can pay in instalments if your course fee is in excess of 50 (excluding exam fee). You may also qualify for a fee reduction or waiver if you meet the criteria listed on our website at: Alternatively, you may wish to apply to our Learner Support Fund to help with such things as travel, equipment or exam fees. This fund is limited however and there are restrictions on how it may be used. We are unable to staff all centres to open every day, so please check these details carefully. In addition, we recommend you telephone the centre to check they are open before attending. If the course closes after the first session you will be signposted to any suitable alternative courses. If an alternative course is not available you will be offered a full refund. Please assume that a course will run unless you are contacted. Refunds will only be given if the course is cancelled by the service. If you enrol on a course and withdraw before it starts, without informing the adult education centre, you will not be entitled to a refund. Most courses are open to people aged from 16 years upwards, although learners still in full-time education must provide a letter from their Head Teacher giving permission to attend.
