Develop future talent in your organisation without paying a penny! If you could give a local young person a good start by offering a high quality work placement as part of our traineeship programme, we would love to talk to you. For further information, contact Ann Boocock, [email protected], Connor s story Connor started on the traineeship programme in September 2014, taking up a work placement at Six Town Housing and following Employability, English and maths courses. Connor was a polite and hard working member of the group, gaining confidence in his skills and abilities. He provided good support to the rest of the group, particularly those less able than him. At the outdoor activity day attended by the group, he demonstrated excellent leadership skills and supported the rest of the group to succeed in the activities. Throughout the programme, he demonstrated a great willingness to develop his skills by taking on board all advice given. During the traineeship, he achieved the Level 1 Certificate in Employability Skills, demonstrating very high standards of work throughout his portfolio. He also achieved Level 1 in maths & English and is now well on his way to achieving Level 2 qualifications in both. Connor worked hard on his work placement, getting excellent feedback from managers, and being offered a paid six month placement with Six Town Housing at the end of the initial seven week traineeship. He has now been offered a further six month placement with a view to being offered an apprenticeship at the end. Learner of the year event 2015 On Thursday 21st May, we celebrated the success of our learners, who all work very hard to combine studying with home, family and work commitments. The learners were representative of the many different courses and had been specifically nominated by their tutors in recognition of the level and progression of study and achievements in their various subject areas. Sushma Joshi was the overall learner of the year, in recognition of her high achievement and dedication on a number of courses (above accepting award from Cllr Mike Connolly, Leader of the Council). Certificates were also presented to volunteers who give up their time freely to help other learners. The certificates were presented by Mike Owen, Interim Chief Executive of Bury Council, in recognition of the invaluable contribution that volunteers make to Bury Adult Learning Service. I have really enjoyed the maths class, it has been 25 years since I left school (I got a grade E in GCSE maths) and I have never had much confidence in the subject. I felt nervous when I started the course as I wasn t sure if I would pass, as it has been so long since I studied it. My 7 year old daughter was bringing home maths homework and I realised I wanted to be confident and help her. I m now looking forward to starting Level 2 in maths in September and I have also now started some voluntary work as a learning support worker for learners with additional learning needs. I have gained so much from these, they helped me to work better with my children and understand how they learn at school. I myself have gained my Level 1 and 2 in literacy and maths which I never thought I could do. Doing these courses gave me the confidence to further my learning and I have got a Childcare Level 3 and also got myself back into employment. The support I received through my tutor had a great impact to where I have got myself today. L Ireland 6 Learn for Life FOR ADVICE AND INFORMATION CONTACT STUDENT SERVICES ON
