3 3 Learner Support Services Supporting learners with disabilities The Learner Support Service works to enable learners with physical or sensory disabilities or mental health problems to join courses advertised in this directory. The Learner Support team can: assess the support you may need arrange support where possible support and advise you and your tutor during your course arrange for materials to be adapted You can join our Disability Learners Forum - share information, views and news. Volunteering Volunteers are needed to work alongside learners with disabilities and learning difficulties who require extra support in the classroom. Have you got two hours to spare each week? Contact the Volunteer Organiser on Adults with Learning Difficulties and/or Disabilities In the ALDD Department at CALAT Coulsdon Centre courses are designed to meet the learning needs of adults with learning difficulties and / or disabilities. What do you want to learn? The ALDD programme aims to develop and encourage your independence, health, fitness and work ready skills. You practice speaking, listening, literacy and numeracy skills on all our courses. What courses do we offer? Mosaics, pottery, art and creative textiles, singing and drumming, performing arts and gardening, personal finance, independent living, computers, cookery and more. The courses are free. However, there is a small charge for materials and ingredients on creative and cookery courses. Contact the ALDD Department on for course details and to make an appointment for an assessment. 4 4 Art and Craft Are you feeling creative? Have you considered taking up a new hobby or maybe you would like to develop skills that could make extra money or enhance your career? CALAT offers a wide choice of interesting and enjoyable art and craft courses. Our tutors are outstanding professional practitioners who will encourage you to develop your creativity and skills. Key for Art and Craft courses, unless specified otherwise: Beginners & Improvers - as a beginner or improver you will be made to feel comfortable and will gradually build up confidence as you progress and develop your skills. Intermediate - join this level if you have recently progressed in one of our beginners or improvers classes or have gained experience and ability elsewhere. Advanced - suitable if you have recently progressed within an intermediate class, or have extensive experience. - for mixed abilities, including beginners. Content and pace will be agreed within the group. Beginners and the more advanced will benefit from this shared experience. Progression through the different levels is at your own pace. A basic level of literacy is required for intermediate and advanced level courses. See page 6 for one day workshops. Some courses may include museum or gallery visits. All abilities welcome, from beginners to those wanting to progress. 7 7 Beauty therapy and Complementary therapy A programme of Beauty and Complementary therapy courses accredited by ITEC provide a foundation for working in these two industries. A variety of ITEC courses provide vocational qualifications which enable you to obtain the skills necessary for employment or self employment. CALAT courses in these subjects are offered subject to availability of government funding. All ITEC Level 2 and Level 3 courses require applicants to attend an interview and assessment session. The next courses will commence in September If you are interested in these programmes please call and we will add your name to the waiting list. Places are offered after interview and assessment - a brochure with full qualification details will be sent to you towards the end of June 2014 with details of how to book onto one of these sessions. Beauty therapy ITEC Level 2 Diploma in Beauty The course offered in September 2014 will include the main skills needed to become a beauty therapist. These will include facial, eye treatments, manicure, pedicure and waxing. The courses cover using the internet, computer safety, document creation, Microsoft Office programmes (Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Access). These are ideal if you are looking for a job or want to update your skills to improve your career prospects. All courses are also suitable for anyone wanting to use a computer for leisure and are accredited. If you wish to do any of these courses, please attend an induction session on any Monday at 2pm at CALAT Central Croydon Centre so that you can register and enrol. You do not have to book. 11 11 ABC Awards Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills This full year course is an accredited introduction to the counselling profession and the practical skills required within it. The course provides a qualification and is suitable for those looking to progress in counselling training or as an introduction to transferable communication skills that are useful in other career and educational opportunities. Counselling Dance and Performing arts Do you fancy learning to strut your stuff on the dance floor with sophisticated ballroom and Latin American dance steps or fun line dancing? Or how about brushing up your old ballet skills? Dance is a wonderful opportunity to develop your creative side and is very popular. It s a fun and sociable way to stay in shape. 12 12 English for Speakers of Other Languages CALAT offers courses in ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) for people who are settled in the UK and want to improve their English language skills for work, life or study in the UK and gain nationally recognised qualifications. Most courses lead to Trinity or Cambridge ESOL Skills for Life exams and include employability skills training. Term dates: Summer term 2014 Tuesday 22 April - Friday 18 July 2014 Summer term 2014 Tuesday 22 April -Tuesday 8 July 2014 (Central Croydon only) We offer Pre-entry, Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2. Courses are for 10 or 11 weeks at the following times: Mornings 9.30am-12.30pm (twice a week) Midday pm or pm (three times a week) Twilight pm (three times a week) Evening pm (two or three times a week) ESOL classes are free for learners who are eligible for funded classes and receiving Job Seekers Allowance (JSA), ESA (WRAG) or other means tested benefits and looking for work. 21 Working with children, young people and families 21 Working with Parents Volunteer Programme CALAT and Croydon Council are working partnership to provide this opportunity for people who wish to develop their skills in the field of family support. This programme runs twice a year and is free to people who commit to volunteer supporting parents for a minimum of 1 year. You will need to volunteer in a suitable setting, such as a children s centre and undertake a training programme once a week at CALAT Thornton Heath Centre. Please note dates are fixed and cannot be changed. Please note that payment is required at time of enrolment. Submission and acceptance of an enrolment form does not guarantee you a place on the course of your choice. If paying by Standing Order and you withdraw from the course you will still be liable to pay the total course fee. UK bank account details - sort code, account number and full bank address including postcode if standing order paid by someone else - bank account payee proof of address and contact details. Fees Fees are divided into four categories: S, D, X or V S = Standard fee for both Croydon and non-croydon residents. D = Discounted fee for: Croydon residents aged 19+ in receipt of a benefit marked D on the enrolment form, or Learners aged over 65 as at with an annual household income of less than 25, X = No fee: you may currently be eligible for free accredited courses if you are: in receipt of JSA (incl those receiving National Insurance credits only); ESA (WRAG only) unemployed and in receipt of one of the following: Income Support, Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit, Pensions Credit (Guarantee credit or coupled with Savings credit) unemployed and receiving Universal Credit and mandated to undertake skills training studying GCSE maths or English, if you do not have a grade at A*-C studying an English and maths qualification including functional skills years old with no prior full Level 2 qualification on an Entry/Level 1 course (not ESOL) years old first full Level 2 entitlement years old first full Level 3 entitlement under 19 years as at Please check with a CALAT staff member for eligibility before enrolling. V = Overseas (Visitors) fee: you will have to pay the V fee if you do not meet the eligibility criteria for non-eu nationals residing in the EU or have been residing outside the EU during the past three years. Learners cannot claim any concessionary fees or apply for Discretionary Learner Support Fund (Access Fund) on the Overseas fee. Please contact any CALAT Centre office for further information. Funding Funding for Level 3 courses Level 3 courses can be funded in one of the following ways: If you are and have no previous Level 3 qualifications you will be entitled to free tuition, which includes exam and relevant materials costs. If you are aged 24 years or over you can apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan to fund the costs of your course If you are aged 24 years or over you can pay the full published fee yourself. 24+ Advanced Learning Loans These are available for anyone aged 24 or over wishing to study a Level 3 or above qualification.this means that learners do not have to pay the course fee upfront. Repayments for the loan will only start once the adult is earning over 21,000 per year. The amount paid back each year is dependent on the wage earned over this amount and not how much the course costs. Loans are funded from the Student Loan Company and are not means tested or subject to credit checks. The loan is available irrespective of the learner s current employment status. The application form is simple and can be done online. For more information see or The 24+ Advanced Learning Loans are for anyone who: is resident in the UK has not previously had a loan to do the same type and level of qualification. The loan amount you will need to borrow will be for the cost of delivering the course in line with government guidance related to each individual qualification. Therefore different qualifications at Level 3 may cost differing amounts. CALAT courses that are affected include: Beauty, Childcare, Health & Social Care, A levels and Children s Workforce. Other funding and assistance If you are on a low income and on a course leading to a qualification, you may be eligible to apply for the Discretionary Learner Support Fund (Access Fund). The fund could help pay towards the cost of course tuition fees, examination fees, course materials and child care. Adults with learning difficulties and/or disabilites (ALDD) may be eligible to apply for support with travel costs. If you are on a non-accredited course and receive a state means tested benefit or if you are on a low income (annual household income of 25,000 or less), you may be eligible to apply for a Community Learning Bursary.

23 Learner information 23 If you are on a course which is funded by the 24+ Advanced Learning Loan, you may be eligible for additional financial support with travel costs, childcare and essential equipment through the loans bursary. Please ask at your Centre office for more details of eligible courses or call extension Please be aware that funds are limited. CALAT phone numbers are withheld - if your home / work telephone number does not accept calls from withheld numbers we regret it may not be possible for us to contact you. Wherever possible please provide us with a mobile telephone number or an alternative means of contacting you, if this is the case. Cancelled courses & fee refunds - CALAT reserves the right to amalgamate, change the location, tutor, date or cancel a course if enrolments are too few or in any other exceptional circumstance. We will try to find you a suitable alternative or refund the full cost by cheque. Refunds will only be given under the seven working days cooling off period, or to learners with medical conditions on completion of the refund form (please see CALAT Refunds and Transfer Policy available on or from any CALAT Centre office). N.B. Refunds under medical conditions are subject to a admin fee. If you wish to apply for a refund under medical conditions you must do so within three months from your last date of attending the course. Examination and assessment information Examination entry - Learners enrolled on an accredited course are expected to undertake an exam or assessment. Please ensure you enrol using the name you wish to see on your certificate, as the name given at enrolment will be registered with the awarding bodies for certificates. A fee will be charged by the Exam Board for issuing replacement certificates. Learners with outstanding debts will not be allowed to enrol on any further courses. Fees - Exam fees are mandatory and payable at enrolment. Examination/Assessment fees are set by the relevant board. No discounts can be offered on exam fees. CALAT examination appeals procedure - For details on examination policies and appeals procedure please enquire at any CALAT Centre or visit Centre contact details are on pages 3. Special arrangements- Learners who need special consideration for examinations must provide evidence to support their request. This should be given to the tutor at the start of the course. This evidence will be kept confidential. Personal information - The personal information you provide is passed to the Chief Executive of Skills Funding and, when needed, the Department for Education, including the Education Funding Agency to meet legal responsibilities under the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act 2009, and for the Agency s Learning Records Service (LRS) to create and maintain a unique learner number (ULN). The information may be shared with other organisations for education, training and employmentrelated purposes, including for research. Your data may be shared with your tutor for contact purposes. Further information about use of and access to your personal data, and details of organisations with whom we regularly share data are available at: Re-scheduled classes - CALAT occasionally has to re-schedule a class due to unforeseen circumstances. Arrangements would be made to suit the majority of the class and availability of suitable accommodation. On request the learner would be entitled to a refund in vouchers to the value of the session/s missed in circumstances where a re-arranged class is not convenient for them to attend.
