2 We all know the challenges facing urban elementary schools. Nationwide, 83% of 4th graders growing up in low-income communities can t read at their grade level. Over half lack even basic reading skills. What if you had the chance to do something about that? With Reading Partners, you could have the unique opportunity to run a school-based tutoring center and change the lives of elementary school children you serve. Picture having your own room at the school, filled with the books you loved growing up: The Giving Tree, Where the Wild Things Are, Harold and the Purple Crayon. Picture your team of community volunteers, from high school students to senior citizens, who share your passion for education and are there to work oneon-one with students. And finally, picture the look on a child s face when you stick your head into the classroom to tell them It s time for Reading Partners! The school year is only 10 months long, but the memories you ll create, the management experience you ll build, and the feeling of having made a difference for kids growing up in poverty will last a lifetime. Reading Partners is a nonprofit organization that provides literacy intervention programs at elementary schools in low-income communities. At each school, we utilize a classroom and transform it into a special learning environment called a Reading Center and recruit a corps of community volunteers from all walks of life who will serve as tutors at the school. Each Reading Center is run by a full time Site Coordinator, a Reading Partners AmeriCorps member who serves by supervising volunteers and act as the link between our program and the school. All tutoring is done using a highly structured curriculum that we developed in partnership with faculty at Stanford University. Reading Partners was founded in 1999 in the San Francisco Bay Area and has since grown to become one of the largest and most effective programs of its kind in the country. Standardized test scores show that close to 90% of students who participate with Reading Partners measurably respond to the program, gaining on average and entire grade level in reading skills for every 25 hours in the program. Communication with Reading Partners is very organized, clear, and concise. We feel so fortunate to have Reading Partners on our school campus. Linda Liebert, Principal, Williamson Elementary School, Rancho Cordova, CA

3 Site Coordinator Site Coordinators are placed at elementary schools where they are responsible for running all aspects of the Reading Partners program. They are the face of Reading Partners at the school to the students, volunteers, teachers, and principal. Site Coordinators are given a dedicated space (usually a classroom) where tutoring takes place, normally from 9am-5pm, Monday-Thursday. Fridays are used as team meeting, professional development, and preparation days. During program days, Site Coordinators wear many different hats. They conference with school staff to develop successful strategies for individual students; they match newly trained tutors with newly enrolled students; they serve as a communications hub at the school, ensuring that feedback is being passed from teachers to tutors and vice versa; they perform assessments to track student progress and; they support volunteers to help them become highly effective tutors. One thing is for sure there s never a dull moment! Site Coordinators go through an extensive training process before their school placement, with 2 full weeks of off-site training and an additional 3 weeks of on-site preparation time before the first day of tutoring. Additionally, Site Coordinators have the support of Program Managers, experienced educators and nonprofit managers who supervise teams of 4 Site Coordinators at schools in the same region. Program Managers provide constant support to Site Coordinators, typically spending at least one full day per week at each school site. Requirements Interest in learning about public education and literacy Passion for community service and working with children Ability to work independently and stay organized Strong communications skills, both written and verbal Friendly, outgoing personality Preferred College degree or equivalent experience Previous experience in education Previous experience in the nonprofit sector Stephanie Benevento Second-year AmeriCorps Member, Site Coordinator, Mariano Castro Elementary School, Mountain View, CA After graduating from UC Santa Cruz with a major in Sociology and a minor in Education, Stephanie knew that she wanted to work in elementary schools. Stephanie joined Reading Partners through AmeriCorps to explore the fields of teaching and social work. I chose Reading Partners because I could get my feet wet right away, she says. Within weeks of starting, I was in a classroom running my own program. Thanks to the training and support I received, I was ready to start working with kids right away. Stephanie enjoyed her first year and chose to return for a second year of service with Reading Partners. The best part of being a Site Coordinator? I always come home with fun stories to share. The kids never stop surprising me. Next year, Stephanie will pursue her teaching credential and Master s Degree in Education. She credits Reading Partners with helping her find her calling and improving her resume for graduate school.

4 Outreach Coordinator Outreach Coordinators ensure that program sites have enough volunteers to meet student enrollment goals. There are few positions at any organization that allow you to have such an evident impact as a Reading Partners Outreach Coordinator. Outreach Coordinators form and maintain community partnerships necessary to recruit new volunteers. Reading Partners volunteers come from local high schools, colleges, companies, community organizations, senior centers and many other sources. Reading Partners already has many relationships in some areas, but with an ever-growing need for more tutors at new locations, establishing these relationships remains a critical part of the position. Reading Partners has a highly-organized volunteer management infrastructure, which Outreach Coordinators oversee. Some days, as many as 20 new volunteers express an interest in volunteering as a Reading Partners tutor it is the responsibility of the Outreach Coordinators to guide volunteers through the training process and arrange for their first session at their local center. Requirements Interest in community organizing Organizational skills to manage multiple projects and priorities Ability to work independently and stay organized Experience in customer-service or volunteering Preferred College degree or equivalent experience Previous experience in volunteer management or recruitment Previous experience in the nonprofit sector AmeriCorps offers service opportunities to those 17 and older without regard to race, color, national origin, disability, gender, sexual orientation, religion, political affiliation or other non-merit factors. Applicants must be US citizens, US Nationals or lawful permanent resident aliens. Herb Jones First-year AmeriCorps Member, Outreach Coordinator, Sacramento, CA Throughout his 20-year career with the US Navy, the University of California San Francisco and Google, Herb Jones always felt a connection to his community. He took pride in giving back to his community by volunteering whenever he could. When Herb came across the opportunity to deepen his service by working with Reading Partners as an Outreach Coordinator, he jumped at the opportunity. I had previously volunteered as a reading tutor myself and had experience around community outreach. This position was the perfect fit for me! Herb had an especially unique task with Reading Partners recruiting volunteers for Reading Partners inaugural school year in Sacramento. With an initial enrollment goal of 160 students, Herb worked tirelessly to recruit enough tutors to pair with nearly 200 students. The best part about my position is when I get to help tutors that truly want to be involved, and then to learn of their satisfaction with the program, says Herb. I enjoy helping people reach their goals, and with Reading Partners, I m able to do just that both the students as well as the tutors.

5 Student Coordinator Student Coordinators are placed at elementary schools where they oversee the day-to-day operations of the Reading Partners Plus Afterschool Program. Student Coordinators (SC) will work with a group of 18 students and are responsible for planning and leading group activities, supervising volunteers and acting as the link between the RP program and the school. During program days, SCs utilize a highly structured curriculum developed by Reading Partners. This curriculum also relies heavily on the SC s creativity and innovation. SCs will need to take an active role in the lesson planning, adapting the curriculum to best fit the students needs and interests. Student Coordinators also work to help tutor at risk students in the school. Utilizing the traditional literacy intervention curriculum developed by Reading Partners, SCs will work with individual students to help improve their literacy abilities through the program year. Requirements Excellent interpersonal and community relations skills Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills Experience and interest in working with elementary school-age children Ability to manage multiple projects and calendars at once Preferred College Degree or equivalent experience Previous experience in volunteering or volunteer management Previous experience in education or working with a diverse community and/or English Language Learners Jessica Walters AmeriCorps Alumn, Program Coordinator, Oakland, CA After graduating from UC Berkeley with a degree in History, Jessica planned to become a teacher and wanted more experience working with youth while serving her community. She served a year as an AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer working with middle school students in San Rafael, CA. During that year she started tutoring a second-grade student with Reading Partners. I was very happy with my volunteer experience with Reading Partners and wanted to work with them, she says. She applied and was able to continue to serve with AmeriCorps as a Student Coordinator for the Reading Partners Plus after-school program. Jessica was able to gain first-hand experience in the classroom by teaching a group of first-grade students at Mariano Castro Elementary School in Mountain View, CA. I was excited because the after-school program was still a pilot project, so I got to help develop the curriculum and build the structure of my classroom. I was able to observe other teachers and implement what I had learned in my own classroom I felt like a real teacher and gained valuable skills. After her year as a Student Coordinator, Jessica was hired as the Program Coordinator to help run the after-school program at Learning Without Limits Elementary School in Oakland, CA. I feel so lucky to have found Reading Partners. This job has taught me a lot, and I know this experience will give me an edge in getting into a great graduate school program and help me be a better teacher.
