36 Testimonials Testimonial from Martina Ryan Leahy I returned to education as a mature student after working in retail for 22 years. I decided to enrol for Business & Secretarial at Listowel Community College to learn computer skills. Initially I felt anxious and fearful about going back to school but the hands on approach of the teachers allowed me to settle in quickly and soon I was learning and growing in confidence. The flexible timetable ensured that I could meet my family commitments and continue in part-time employment while I studied. At the end of my first year in Listowel Community College I achieved my FETAC Level 5 in Business and Secretarial and I won a Student of the Year Award from the Kerry Education Service. This award gave me a great confidence boost and bolstered by my success I decided to continue in education and enrolled for FETAC Level 6 in Business Administration. Listowel Community College has developed a strong partnership with the Institute of Technology in Tralee. I benefited from this relationship and began a BA in Applied Social Studies. I have recently graduated with first class honours and also achieved an Award in Excellence from Social Care Ireland. Listowel Community College started me on my journey through education. It equipped with the skills and attitudes I needed to pursue my degree. During my time there I learnt how to be organised, work to deadlines and apply myself to course work. I gained confidence and belief in myself and my abilities. Testimonials for Noranne Enright and Eileen O Connor Noranne Enright and Eileen O Connor both hail from Abbeyfeale and had worked together at the local factory for many years. In 2009 both ladies saw the opportunity to study for the Leaving Certificate under the VTOS programme at Listowel Community College. Needless to say, Noranne and Eileen grasped this opportunity with both hands and held on with a vice-like grip. Having completed the VTOS Leaving Certificate Programme, they continued their studies at Listowel on the Culture and Heritage Course. During their studies for this course Noranne and Eileen showed exceptional commitment, unflagging enthusiasm and a high standard of creativity. They jumped with wild abandon into every academic and vocational challenge that came their way. In one year they packed in so much and never gave less than a hundred percent effort. Not too many students can claim they have published a book, graduated with distinction, worked in a radio station, and acted (in a John B Keane play) with spine-tingling raw emotion in front of the President of Ireland! All of the teachers are very proud of Noranne and Eileen. They are currently studying for a Bachelor of Arts Degree at Mary Immaculate College Limerick. At Listowel Community College we are extremely satisfied that the VTOS Programme and the FETAC course provided such a rich educational platform for these talented ladies. We wish them well in their studies. 36
