3 GENERAL INFORMATION Waterford CFE provides the broadest range of Further Education courses in the South-East. Waterford CFE courses open up direct employment opportunities. Waterford CFE courses can provide access to third level education. Waterford CFE is registered with FETAC to offer programmes leading to Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) awards on the National Framework of Qualifications and has agreed its quality assurance procedures with FETAC. Costs There are no tuition fees payable to the College by EU Nationals. However, students should budget for the cost of examinations, textbooks and materials. Non-EU Nationals who do not meet the exemption requirements are liable for the full tuition fee of 3,653 as per instructions of the Department of Education and Skills. Department of Education and Skills Contribution Fee of 200 payable on registration. College registration fee of 220, payable on registration. This consists of a non-refundable fee of 50, and a fee of 170, non-refundable once a student commences the course. 4 APPLICATION PROCEDURES Application Procedures The closing date for the receipt of applications for the first round of interviews for all courses is Monday 16th February The closing date for the receipt of applications for the second round of interviews for all courses is Friday 24th April Applicants who apply by this date will be called for interview during May. Offer of places will be subject to completion of interview and the achievement of the minimum entry requirements. Applicants will be notified of their interview results in June. Late applications received after Friday 24th April 2015 will be processed, subject to the availability of places, in early September Closing date for receipt of late applications for interviews is 19th August As places on all courses are limited, application before this date is strongly advised. Courses commence in early September. Only one application form should be submitted. Where more than one application is made, only the most recent will be processed. Apply on-line at Entry Requirements A. Unless otherwise stated, the minimum requirements for admission to courses are: Successful completion of Leaving Certificate/Leaving Certificate Applied or equivalent and successful completion of interview. B. Successful completion of Leaving Certificate is defined as a minimum of five grade D subjects at Ordinary Level. C. A minimum pass grade on the Leaving Certificate Applied is acceptable as equivalent to B. above. D. A pass grade in the LCVP link module is acceptable as the equivalent of a pass in one of the five Leaving Certificate subjects mentioned in B. above. E. Foundation level subjects are acceptable. F. Applicants who present with school leaving examinations other than the Leaving Certificate will be assessed on the basis of accepted equivalence tables. G. Mature / Adult Students with no formal qualifications are welcome to apply. Mature students are defined as those aged 23 or over at the beginning of the academic year. H. Students for whom English is a second language will be required to take and pass an English Language test set by the College. I. Students requiring Assistive Technology and/or Personal Support Services as a result of a disability are strongly advised to inform the interview panel of their needs in this area in order to allow for provision. Non-Standard Applicants These are defined as applicants whose application is based on examination results other than the Irish Leaving Certificate. For the purposes of registration, all non-standard applicants must provide documentation to prove that their qualifications are recognised by the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland. (www. qualificationsrecognition.ie) As this process may take some months to arrive at a conclusion, prospective applicants are advised to initiate contact as soon as possible. 5 STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES Further Education is committed to a policy of equal opportunity and welcomes applications from students with documented disabilities and specific learning needs. Students with specific learning difficulties or other disabilities may be entitled to additional supports and services to successfully complete their programme of choice. The College aims to provide support and help for such students within the limits of available resources (namely the HEA Fund for Students with Disabilities**). Who might be eligible? The phrase people with disabilities includes people with physical disabilities, people who are visually impaired; people who are deaf or hard of hearing; people with specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, people with mental health problems and people with significant health or medical problems. What do you need to do? Students with a disability have a responsibility to disclose their disability / specific learning difficulty on their application form. When a student has disclosed their disability, they have an opportunity to meet with the Student Services Coordinator. Once appropriate up to date relevant medical / psychological reports are provided in support of an individual s disability, applications for funding can be made. Documentation may include educational psychologist reports or consultants letters. (Letters from GP s are not acceptable in any circumstances as confirmation of disability) The office of the Student Services Coordinator (Orla Bannon) is located opposite the staff room on the first floor of the main building. **The Fund for Students with Disabilities allocates funding to further and higher education colleges for the provision of services and supports to full-time students with disabilities. 6 ART & DESIGN PORTFOLIO Appreciation of Art/Craft/Design Ceramics Combined Materials Communications Design Drawing Painting Photography Sculpture Fine Art Graphic Design Ceramics Craft Photography Film /Video Industrial and Product Design Interior Design Fashion and Textiles Art and Design Education This is an intensive one-year course designed to provide experience in all the essential areas of art and design. If you want to prepare a portfolio for application to third level art courses or if you have an interest in art and would like to develop existing skills, the art and design portfolio course will provide you with the opportunity to do so. This course will introduce you to a wide range of subjects and broaden your understanding of materials, techniques and processes. Leaving Certificate/Leaving Certificate Applied or equivalent. 7 PHOTOGRAPHIC STUDIES In an increasingly visual society, photography no longer means simply capturing an image. A photograph can be scanned, digitized, manipulated and retouched. Combining traditional silver-based photographic practices with digital technologies, this course aims to emphasise both the artistry and technical requirements of this highly creative field, while offering students a comprehensive training in photographic practice. Leaving Certificate/ Leaving Certificate Applied or equivalent. Applicants are also requested to present samples of their photography at interview. QQI (FETAC) National Vocational Certificate Level 5 - Photography (5M2094) The full QQI (FETAC) Level 5 Certificate facilitates entry, on a competitive basis, to a range of third-level institutions nationwide. The full QQI (FETAC) Level 5 Photography Certificate will also qualify for entry to the WCFE Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Photography. Further details are available from the relevant institutions. Students must obtain one day per week work experience for the academic year. The day will be specified by the College. Photographer Photographic Processing Assistant Advertising General Practice Industrial Photography Commercial Photography Fashion Photography Photographic Processing Technician Press Photograph The aim of the FETAC Level 6 Photography programme is to provide the learner with the opportunity to acquire the knowledge, skill and competence to work independently in a professional photographic setting or to progress to further or higher education and training. Through a series of workshops, lectures and self-directed learning, which are designed to develop and enhance the students visual, creative and theoretical awareness, this educational process aims to equip the learner with the skills necessary to produce a visually successful and coherent body of photographic work and the ability to articulate their work practice when necessary. Upon completion of the Level 6 programme, students gain significant experience by organizing a professional Graduate Exhibition. QQI (FETAC) Advanced Certificate in Photography Level 6 - Photography (6M3732) Applicants should have successfully completed a QQI (FETAC) Level 5 Photography, Media or other QQI (FETAC) Level 5 Art, Craft & Design Certificate. Applicants are also requested to present samples of their photography at interview. 9 JOURNALISM AND PHOTOGRAPHY A full-time course for students interested in Photography, Radio, Journalism and Design. This course would be of particular interest to students who wish to develop a career in print and broadcast journalism, writing and publishing. As this is an N.U.J. recognised course, students may apply for N.U.J. student membership. Leaving Certificate/Leaving Certificate Applied or equivalent. The full QQI (FETAC) Level 5 Certificate facilitates entry, on a competitive basis, to a range of third level institutions nationwide. Further details are available from the relevant institutions. Successful completion of this course will also facilitate progression to related courses at Ballyfermot College of Further Education will also facilitate entry to Level 6 and 7 courses in related areas. Game Audio Production Film Audio Production A full-time course for students interested in a career in music/ sound engineering/music promotion and journalism. The course examines the music industry with a particular emphasis on visual and sound technologies and music production as well as audio production for film and the games industry. 11 BEAUTY THERAPY - YEAR 1 This is a full-time course including both practical and theoretical training in aspects of beauty therapy. The course leads to diplomas of international recognition. We have a high standard of training with our students receiving awards at national and international level, opening up a wide range of employment opportunities worldwide. There are no college tuition fees. However, the total cost of salon materials, uniforms and exams amount to approximately 795. 13 HAIRDRESSING - YEAR 1 This is a full-time course which involves on- and off-the-job intensive training. It provides students with the range of practical skills and theoretical knowledge required for the hairdressing industry. Training is provided in two fully-equipped modern salons. As part of this course, other experts from the industry hold workshops with the class throughout the year. It provides students with the range of practical skills and theoretical knowledge required for the hairdressing industry, with internationally recognised certification. Training is provided in two fully-equipped modern salons. Throughout the year, other experts from the industry will hold workshops in cutting, colouring, barbering, up-styling and hair extensions. Students may be brought to shows as part of their training and will also have the opportunity to enter Hair Competitions. QQI (FETAC) Component Certificate Department of Education & Skills Senior Trade Certificate (Level 6) Successful completion of Hairdressing Year 1 course with a Pass (minimum) in Hairdressing Science and Hairdressing theory and Practice. 15 HOLISTIC THERAPIES This is a full-time course leading to professional qualifications. Students will receive a sound knowledge of Holistic Therapies from ancient philosophies to modern day teaching. As part of their training, students will learn to take a holistic approach, treating body, mind and spirit, thereby guiding their client towards better health and general wellbeing. Leaving Certificate/ Leaving Certificate Applied or Equivalent. Mature students welcome. 18 ADVANCED CERTIFICATE IN BUSINESS Business Management Finance Communications Spreadsheets Sales Presentation Applied Economics Statistics Business subjects, coupled with information technology, prepare students for a wide range of career opportunities at middle management level in Finance, Management, Self-Employment and the Public Sector. This is a full-time course designed to advance existing skills of students who have completed a business studies course. Students will be required to attend classes on each weekday, from Monday to Friday. Successful completion of a QQI (FETAC) Level 5 Certificate business or computing.
