4 Adult Literacy Service Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board provides an Adult Literacy and Basic Education Service for adults throughout Laois and Offaly who wish to improve their reading, writing, spelling, maths or computer skills. This Service is free and confidential and is provided by trained tutors. Both one to one and group tuition are available. English language courses are available for people who wish to learn English as a second language. 2

5 Adult Literacy Service Courses One To One Tuition Tuition is given on an individual basis to adults who need to improve reading and writing skills. It is confidential and arranged at a time that suits the learner morning, afternoon or evening for 1 2 hours per week Literacy Classes Improving reading, writing and spelling in small groups Intensive Spelling and Grammar Programmes Mechanics of English An opportunity to revisit all aspects of punctuation, spelling and grammar from basic to advanced levels Sounds Write Linguistic Phonics Programme Improve your reading and spelling skills by focusing on the 43 sounds in the English language and learning the letters and combinations of letters that represent those sounds Introduction to Information Technology This course is for those who have no prior knowledge or experience using computers. It teaches the basics of computers, internet & General Learning programme QQI/FETAC Level 1 & 2 Core modules are Reading, Writing, Listening & Speaking, Basic Maths and Computer Skills General Learning Programme, Information and Communication Technologies & Employability Skills QQI/FETAC Level 3 include Communications, Personal & Interpersonal Skills, Maths, Career Preparation, Word Processing, Computer Literacy and Internet & Give Maths a Go This course teaches the practical use of maths in everyday life Intensive Tuition in Adult Basic Education (ITABE) An intensive 14 week literacy programme focused on accelerated learning Including Literacy, Numeracy, Information Technology Family Learning Programmes Storysacks, Kindermusik, English Language Support and Cookery English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes Language and Literacy, Beginner Level English, QQI/FETAC Level 3 English (Elementary Level). 6 Back to Education Junior and Leaving Certificate QQI/FETAC Awards / BTEI Options The Back to Education Initiative (BTEI) provides further education programmes for young people and adults. Part BTEI funding for course fees is provided for students with less than a Leaving Certificate or who hold a medical card or who are in receipt of approved Social Welfare benefits e.g. Jobseekers Allowance/Benefit, Disability Allowance, Carers Allowance etc. for Junior Cert/Leaving Cert/QQI/FETAC Programmes. All fees are based on BTEI eligibility. 4

7 National Framework of Qualifications QQI/FETAC Explained The courses outlined in this section are all linked to the National Framework of Qualifications below. The 10 Levels incorporate all levels of learning, from the very initial stages to the most advanced. Laois and Offaly Education and Training Board offers QQI/FETAC Level 1 6 courses. The following is a breakdown of the Levels and their comparisons: On 6 November 2012, Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) was established as a new integrated agency (replacing the Further Education and Training Awards Council, the Higher Education and Training Awards Council and the National Qualifications Authority of Ireland and incorporating the functions of the Irish Universities Quality Board). 5

12 QQI/FETAC Level 4 QQI/FETAC Level 4 Science Skills This course will enable the learner to develop the relevant knowledge, skill and competence in a broad range of scientific skills which enable employment, under direct supervision, in a variety of science sectors, or progression to further education or training. Successful QQI/FETAC Level 5 Award holders may apply for places in Third Level Colleges e.g. Limerick School of Art & Design, Crawford College of Art, Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology and many other Institutes to further their education. Students will develop professional skills in the areas of research, writing and communications. Archaeology Local History Studies Folklore & Ethnology Heritage Studies European Studies Customer Service Personal Effectiveness Word Processing Work Experience QQI/FETAC Level 5 Art, Craft & Design The Art, Craft and Design course offers students the opportunity to explore the varied aspects of fine art and craft. Over the year students develop and enhance basic skills in drawing and design and transfer these skills into other areas of study such as ceramics, painting, and combined materials amongst others. The student will finish the year with a comprehensive body of skills and a professional portfolio of work. They will also take part in a group exhibition where they get the opportunity to exhibit their work professionally. Students who successfully complete this course may have the option to continue their studies in the Centre progressing to the Art and Business QQI/FETAC Level 6 course. The full QQI/FETAC Level 5 award facilitates entry, on a competitive basis, to a range of third level institutions. Graduates can apply for any art/ design course in the Institutes of Technology, NCAD or abroad with a quality portfolio. Students complete four business based modules which gives them a comprehensive understanding of the business of art. As part of the course they will complete the necessary paper work to allow them to professionally apply for Percent for Art schemes, exhibitions, residencies etc. Completion of the Level 6 Art Major Award allows students to apply directly for advanced entry to 2nd year of the BA in Design (Ceramics) at LSAD. The broad approach allows graduates to enter the segment of the industry that most appeals to them, ranging from craft based workshops to modern furniture manufacturers. Students who qualify in this area can pursue further study and a career in Furniture Design, CAD Draughtsperson, Carpentry or Joinery, Cabinet Making, Furniture Making and Industrial Design. It is ideal for those who wish to pursue a career in Beauty Therapy and the Beauty related industry. Students will work with the Professional Skin Care range Dermalogica. Students who successfully complete this Course can pursue further study and will have the skills necessary to pursue an apprenticeship in Hairdressing. Successful participants will gain a Senior Trade Qualification from the Department of Education and Skills Job Options Holders of Senior Trade Hairdressing qualification will have the necessary skills for employment as a Senior Stylist. On successful completion of this programme, students can apply to other institutions for further training. 18 QQI/FETAC Level 5 & Level 6 Awards QQI/FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Business Studies The main aim of this course is to provide students with the skills and knowledge to effectively respond to everyday business situations. Students will be eligible to work in a wide range of business organisations upon completion of the course or further their education by applying for a Business related course in any Third Level College in Ireland. Students who successfully complete this course may apply to Third Level Institutes and Colleges through the QQI/FETAC Higher Education Links Scheme. It offers a wide range of subjects with a particular emphasis on business administration and IT skills. Over the past number of years this course has provided students with job placements in their chosen sectors and allowed many more to progress to third level study. A number of students have set up their own successful businesses. Students who successfully complete this course may have the option to continue their studies at the Centre progressing to the Business Management QQI/FETAC Level 6 course. Students who have satisfied the criteria set by the CAO process for progression to third level education have in the past secured a place into the National Universities of Ireland and many of the Institutes of Technology. It offers a wide range of subjects with a particular emphasis on e-business and Marketing. The main aim of the course is to allow students gain practical and theoretical appreciation of the role played by technology in business today. It also allows students to appreciate the opportunities presented by the web and e-business to successfully market products and services. Students who successfully complete this course may have the option to continue their studies at the Centre progressing to the Business Management QQI/FETAC Level 6 course. The main aim of this course is to provide students with the skills and knowledge to effectively respond to everyday business situations. An agreement has been negotiated with Carlow IT to accept Abbeyleix FEC Level 6 Business students directly into the second year of a Business course leading to an Honours degree, subject to interview. Accounting Technician First Year and Second Year Our accountancy course has two distinct years to cover First Year and Second Year. First Year gives you a foundation knowledge of business and accounting, while Second Year of our accountancy course allows you to build a deeper understanding of more advanced accounting issues. There is a practical focus on the IT systems that are commonly used in accounting. 21 QQI/FETAC Level 5 & Level 6 Awards QQI/FETAC Level 5 Certificate in Childhood Studies with Special Needs Assistant This course is designed to develop the communication, intellectual, practical and caring skills essential for people working with children (0-6 years). This course offers the opportunity to gain a Childcare and Special Needs Assistant qualification. Successful QQI/FETAC Level 5 Award Holders may apply for places in Third Level Colleges, e.g. Universities and Institutes of Technology, to further their education. Students may also progress onto the Advanced Certificate in Supervision in Childcare QQI/FETAC Level 6.
