Prepare and Place the Rack PREPARE AND PLACE THE RACK Caution Ensure that an appropriate rack is assembled and placed near the AC power outlets, and network and data connections. The rack must be located on a level, hard-surfaced floor, such as cement or tile. Do not place the rack on a carpeted floor or anywhere else that poses risk for static discharge that could damage your gateway or its drives. The T50e library and BlackPearl gateway are designed to fit in a standard 19 inch (48.3 cm), 4 post rack. T50e Library Specifications BlackPearl Gateway Height 4U 7 in. (17.8 cm) 2U 3.5 in. (8.9 cm) Width 17.5 in. (44.4 cm) 19 in. (48.3 cm) Depth 31.6 in. (80.3 cm) 27.5 in. (69.9 cm) Maximum Weight a 108 lb (49.0 kg) b 55.9 lb (25.4 kg) c a. Weights are approximate. b. Includes the chassis, the LCM (library control module), four half-height tape drives, two power supplies, and 47 cartridges. c. Includes the chassis, and ten SAS HDDs (hard-disk drives). Keep the following in mind when selecting a rack: Check your rack s specifications to make sure it will accommodate the weight and depth of the T50e and BlackPearl chassis. Notes: The use of a two post rack is not supported. An enclosed 19 inch (48.3 cm), four post rack is available for purchase from Spectra Logic. The rack has two doors and removable side panels. Contact Spectra Logic Sales for more information (see Contacting Spectra Logic on page 2). In earthquake prone areas, provide restraints as necessary. The SAS cables between the BlackPearl gateway and the T50e library are 3 meters long. It is best if the library and the gateway are installed in the same rack. Using a 4 post rack that is at least 36 inches (91 cm) deep is recommended. Make sure that the distance between the mounting surfaces on the front and rear posts is at least 30 inches (76 cm). Allow approximately 3 inches (8 cm) of additional depth at the back of the rack for cable clearance. 6

Prepare and Place the Rack If you are using an enclosed rack with a front door, identify the front of the rack and make sure that there is at least 2 inches (5 cm) of clearance between the front door frame and the front mounting posts, as shown in Figure 1. This clearance is needed to allow the front door to close over the front bezel of the BlackPearl gateway. If necessary, move the front mounting posts toward the back of the rack to provide the clearance. 2 in. CONFIGURE LIBRARY SETTINGS It is vital to configure the following library settings before using it with the BlackPearl gateway. See Configure Global Settings in the Spectra T50e Library User Guide for information on configuring other, optional, library settings. Configure Network Settings Spectra Logic highly recommends that you connect the library to an Ethernet network and configure it for network access as described in this section. Network access lets you perform the following operations: Access the BlueScale web interface for remote management of the library using a standard web browser. Open support incidents or send ASLs (AutoSupport Logs) to Spectra Logic Technical Support for troubleshooting directly from the library. Automatically system messages or reports to configured mail users. Automatically send a notification to a specified mail recipient when certain critical events occur. Download the latest BlueScale update package from Spectra Logic s Support portal directly to the library. These functions are not available if you do not connect the library to an Ethernet network. The IP address of the library displays in the upper right corner of the touch screen operator panel. If the library does not have an IP address configured or if it is not connected to an Ethernet network, displays in this location. Note: If you are accessing the library remotely through the BlueScale web interface, the library name, if configured, displays instead of the IP address. If the library name is not configured, the upper right corner of the screen is blank. 21

Configure Library Settings Configure Network Settings Using DHCP Addressing By default, the IP address for the Ethernet port on the LCM (Library Control Module) is set automatically using the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). Notes: If you select DHCP addressing, the LCM must be connected to an Ethernet network that has a DHCP server to obtain an IP address. Do not select DHCP addressing if your network does not have a DHCP server. Using Static IP Addressing If your network does not use DHCP, or if you want the library to have a fixed IP address, you can configure a static (fixed) IP address as described in this section. Using a static IP address ensures that you always know the IP address for the library and is highly recommended, especially if you plan to manage the library remotely using the BlueScale web interface. Prepare the Library Important If you want to change the network settings of the library, make sure that the library is connected to the network before you power on the library. Before configuring the network settings, make sure that you address the following requirements: The library is connected to an active link on the Ethernet network. A unique IP address is available on the network if you plan to use a static IP address. This address cannot be in use by another device. The DHCP server is configured on the network if you plan to use DHCP addressing. Set the IP Addressing Use the following steps to configure the library for Ethernet network access. 1. If necessary, click MENU to display the Menu screen. 2. Click Configuration to display the Configuration menu. 3. On the Configuration menu, click More Options (down arrow) to display additional configuration options. 22

Configure Library Settings Configure Date and Time 4. Click Network. The Network screen displays. This screen changes depending on whether the library is configured to use DHCP or Static IP addressing. Figure 14 Use the Network screen to configure the IP addressing for the library. 5. Decide which type of addressing you want the library to use. DHCP (default setting) The library is issued an IP address by the DHCP server. Static (highly recommended) The library uses a fixed IP address. If you select static addressing, enter the following information: For this field... Address Subnet Gateway Enter... A valid IP address in the form nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn. The subnet mask. The subnet mask must be a valid IP address in the form nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn. A valid network gateway address in the form nnn.nnn.nnn.nnn. Enter for the Gateway if your network does not use a gateway. Configure Date and Time 6. Click Save to change the IP addressing. Note: The library s IP address changes as soon as you click Save. As a result, if you are connected to the library through the BlueScale web interface the connection to the library is lost. Reconnect to the library using the new IP address. Log into the library to continue using the BlueScale web interface. Use the following steps to configure the library s system clock. 1. If necessary, click MENU to display the Menu screen. 2. Click Configuration to display the Configuration menu. 3. On the Configuration menu, click More Options (down arrow) to display additional configuration options. 23

Configure Library Settings Create Additional Users 4. Click Date & Time. The Date & Time screen displays showing the method currently selected for setting the date and time. Note: The values in the Date & Time counters do not wrap. For example, to change the month from December to January, click and hold the button to decrement the month. 5. Use the + and buttons to set the month, day, year, hour, and minute to display. Note: Instead of clicking the + or button multiple times, you can click and hold the button to advance through the available values. 6. Click Save. Create Additional Users Figure 15 Set the date and time for the library. 7. Click MENU to return to the Configuration menu. There are three default users set up on the library: su (superuser), administrator, and operator. By default, passwords are not set for the three default users. Use the following steps to add a new library user and assign that user to a user group. 1. If necessary, click MENU to display the Menu screen. 24

Configure Library Settings Create Additional Users 4. Complete the information on the New User screen. Note: User names and passwords can contain any combination of the numbers 0 9, lower and upper case alphabetic characters (a z and A Z), and the at symbol (@), dash ( ), underscore (_), period (.), forward slash (/), and space characters. There is no limit to the length but that we recommend lengths of less than 2048 characters. For this field... User Password Retype Password User Type Enter... The name for the user. A password for the user; retype the password to confirm. Notes: For security, the text in the Password and Retype Password fields is shown as asterisks (*). Though highly recommended, passwords are not required for any of the three user types. Select the group to which the user belongs. Superuser Controls all aspects of the library s configuration and operation, including defining other library users and assigning them to a user privilege group. Notes: The library requires a minimum of one superuser. You cannot delete the last member of the Superuser group. Only a user with superuser privileges can add, modify, or delete users. Only a user with superuser privileges can access and configure encryption features. Administrator Configures and uses the library. With the exception of creating or modifying library users and accessing the Encryption features, users in the Administrator group have the same privileges as users in the Superuser group. 62 Appendix B Recommended Settings Use the tables below to see the typical settings for many options on both the BlackPearl gateway and associated tape library. Note: While specific settings, like IP addresses, are unique to each installation, following some simple naming and setting conventions make maintenance and troubleshooting simpler and allow for future data merges without the danger of data corruption through duplicate names. Tape Library Typical Settings Item Where to Find Recommended Setting Notes Tape Library Option Enablement Keys In the BlueScale user interface, select Configuration > System. None Option Enablement keys are installed automatically as part of the T50e installation process. See AutoInstall the Option Activation Keys and Update the BlueScale Software on page 14 for more information. Library Name In the BlueScale user interface, select Configuration > System. 64 Item Where to Find Recommended Setting Notes Date & Time In the BlackPearl user interface, select Configuration > Network. NTP Enabled 0.freebsd.pool.ntp.org 1.freebsd.pool.ntp.org NTP recommended. If you want to set this manually, see Configure Date and Time on page 56 for more information. SMTP In the BlackPearl user interface, select Configuration > Network. None Configure to use your local SMTP server, which must be capable of sending outgoing mail. Recommended that you send a test to confirm configuration. See Configure SMTP Settings on page 53 for more information. Online Storage Pool In the BlackPearl user interface, select Configuration > Advanced Bucket Management. Then select Action > New Online Disk Pool. None If your system contains a BlackPearl expansion node, configure the drives as a storage target. See Create Online Disk Pool in the BlackPearl User Guide for more information. BlackPearl Cache Management In the BlackPearl user interface, select Configuration > Advanced Bucket Management. Then select Action > Manage Cache and Online Disk. 10 or 20 drives in cache, configured in Performance mode. Making a change requires a reboot. See Configure the Cache in the BlackPearl User Guide for more information. Unused SAS drives are available for Online disk pools. Nearline Storage Pools In the BlackPearl user interface, select Configuration > Advanced Bucket Management. The gateway assigns a unique pool name when it creates the pool. If your system contains an ArcticBlue expansion node, the storage pool(s) display automatically. See Disk Partitions in the BlackPearl User Guide for more information. Disk Partitions In the BlackPearl user interface, select Configuration > Advanced Bucket Management. Consider naming with the format: Type_Usage, for example: Online1_Staging New disk partitions can be created from existing storage pools (see Online Storage Pools and Nearline Storage Pools, above). See Create a Disk Partition in the BlackPearl User Guide for more information. Tape Partitions In the BlackPearl user interface, select Configuration > Advanced Bucket Management. Consider naming with the name used in the library: Function_Library_ Location for example Archive1A_T50e#1_DC3 When the gateway detects a new tape partition in a tape library, it automatically configures a tape partition. See Tape Partitions in the BlackPearl User Guide for more information. Gateway 64

Item Where to Find Recommended Setting Notes Storage Domains In the BlackPearl user interface, select Configuration > Advanced Bucket Management. None At a minimum, there should be one storage domain for each partition, plus another if you want a second copy on tape, or an eject copy. First tape copy should use Performance mode unless you need bucket isolation to keep tape(s) exclusive to a bucket. If used for tape ejection, the second copy should be configured in Capacity mode. Disk storage pools should be configured in Capacity mode. See the BlackPearl User Guide for more information. Data Policy In the BlackPearl user interface, select Configuration > Advanced Bucket Management. Consider naming with details on the policy rules, for example: single tape plus eject copy Default data policies are automatically created depending on the types of storage present on the BlackPearl gateway. Special policies can be created for multiple copies on different types of media and configured for automatic expiration over time. For a basic single copy to tape, no modifications are required. See the BlackPearl User Guide for more information. Gateway 65

Item Where to Find Recommended Setting Notes Users In the BlackPearl user interface, select Configuration > Users. None User designates access to buckets, not BlackPearl user interface login. A default data policy must be set for a User. This can be changed when a bucket is created, but is used as the default data policy when a bucket is created outside of the BlackPearl user interface. After creating a User, select Action > Show S3 Credentials to display the S3 credentials of the user. These credentials are needed in the setup of an external client or plugin. See Create Users on page 50 and View S3 Credentials on page 51 for more information. Buckets In the BlackPearl user interface, select Configuration > Advanced Bucket Management. None At least one bucket must be created to use the BlackPearl gateway for data storage. Different buckets can have different data policies. See Create a Bucket on page 52 for more information. Tapes In the BlackPearl user interface, select Status > Tape Management. None After adding tapes to the tape library, make sure they are listed as Managed in the Tape Management screen. See Chapter 6 Working with Tape Libraries and Media in the BlackPearl User Guide for more information. Gateway 66
