The pages you skip, which are related to firmware and templates, are useful when you add devices later, after you complete the initial server setup. 6. Enter the two types of names for the device: Device Name The name that appears throughout the Systems Manager. Assign an easily identifiable name, such as one that indicates the physical device location or the equipment it monitors. Hardware Name The hostname of the device, which is in the format of NI-cRIO-ModelNumber-SerialNumber. If you entered the IP address during step 3, NI InsightCM Server automatically populates this name. Otherwise, you can find the model and serial numbers printed on a label on the back of the device. 7. Click Finish. Systems Manager displays one of the following prompts: Do you want to send credentials to the device web server? Click Yes to transfer credentials across the network to the device. This prompt displays if you enter an IP address during step 3. Do you want to export the device connection information file? Click Yes and save this file in a location where you can access it in the future. Later in this document, you will manually transfer credentials to the device via USB drive. This prompt displays when you do not enter an IP address during step 3. Note Device credentials consist of a temporary password that NI InsightCM Server expects the device to possess. Devices cannot come online and connect to NI InsightCM Server until they receive this temporary password. 8. Systems Manager automatically loads the Device Configuration page for the new device. Notice the warning glyph next to the device name, which indicates the device will not come online until you finish configuring it later in this document. In the next section, you configure the channels on the device in preparation for connecting the device to the server. 6 ni.com Getting Started with NI InsightCM Server
Configuring Channels Before you connect the device to NI InsightCM Server, ensure the device configuration contains only channels from which you want to acquire data and name the channels appropriately. Completing these tasks ensures that data the device acquires is useful and understandable. 1. Click the Channels tab on the Device Configuration page. The table of channels at the left side of the tab contains all the channels available on modules that NI InsightCM Server detected in the device. 2. Select any channels that are not connected to sensors, and then click the Remove button. Tip To select multiple channels to remove, <Ctrl> or <Shift>-click the channels. 3. Select one of the remaining channels. 4. On the Settings tab to the right of the channel table, click the Edit button beside the Channel Name field. 5. Enter an easily identifiable name, such as one that indicates the equipment or sensor the channel monitors. Channel names can contain only letters, numbers, dashes, underscores and spaces. 6. Repeat steps 3 to 5 for each remaining channel that you want to monitor. 7. When you finish renaming channels, proceed to the next section without saving the device configuration. You will save the configuration in the next section when you are ready to bring the device online. In the next section, you map the channels to the equipment they monitor. Mapping the Device to the Equipment Layout In the Defining the Layout of Equipment to Be Monitored section, you represented the physical equipment to be monitored by NI Condition Monitoring Systems. Now that you added a device and configured its channels, you can complete the following steps to identify, or map, the specific equipment the device channels monitor. Mapping channels to equipment allows the Data Explorer software to group data with the equipment that produced it. Mappings also allow users to find data in an intuitive structure. 1. Click the Equipment Layout tab on the Device Configuration page. Note You can switch between tabs on the Device Configuration page without discarding your changes. However, if you switch to a different page, such as the Dashboard page, before saving the device configuration, Systems Manager discards any changes you make. Getting Started with NI InsightCM Server National Instruments 7
2. In the Device Equipment section, click the Edit Device Location button. 3. A dialog box opens and displays the equipment-layout tree you defined. Click the node that contains the components that the device channels monitor. This can be a site, area, line, or equipment node, but it must have component nodes nested underneath it because you will map device channels to the components. Click Select. Figure 5. Selecting a Node to Map to the Device 4. Back on the Equipment Layout tab, select a channel in the Channel Equipment section, and then click the Edit button. Tip To map multiple channels to the same component, <Ctrl> or <Shift>-click the channels. 5. In the tree that displays again, select the component to which the channel is physically connected, and then click Select. You can select only component nodes. 8 ni.com Getting Started with NI InsightCM Server
The following screenshot shows a device with one channel mapped to a component of a piece of equipment. Figure 6. Mapping Channels to Components 6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for each channel on the device. 7. When you finish mapping channels to components, click the Save button. The warning glyph no longer appears beside the device name. Saving a device configuration triggers NI InsightCM Server to send the configuration and software to the device. The status of the device determines your next steps: If you entered an IP address when you added the device, the device receives the update and automatically connects to NI InsightCM Server. Devices might require several minutes to come back online. Proceed to the Verifying Device Connectivity section. If you did not enter an IP address for the device when you added it, the device cannot receive the configuration. Proceed to the next section to tallow the device to connect to NI InsightCM Server and receive the configuration. Getting Started with NI InsightCM Server National Instruments 9
Transferring Credentials to an Offline Device Note Complete this section only if you did not enter an IP address for the device in the Adding the Device to NI InsightCM Server section. If you entered an IP address, skip to the next section, Verifying Device Connectivity. If you added the device configuration without entering the IP address, the device cannot yet connect to NI InsightCM Server because it does not possess the credentials the server expects. Device credentials consist of a temporary password. Complete the following steps to transfer credentials to the device: 1. Find the device connection file you exported in step 7 of the Adding the Device to NI InsightCM Server section. If you did not export a connection file, return to the Devices page in Systems Manager, select the device, and then select Connection»Export Connection File from the Action pull-down menu in the top-right corner of the page. 2. Copy the file to a USB drive, within a folder named InsightCM at the root level of the drive. The filename must be in the format of NI-cRIO-ModelNumber-SerialNumber.txt or the device cannot read it. Tip You can use the blank USB drive included in the NI InsightCM Server kit, if available. 3. Insert the USB drive into the USB port on the controller front panel. The USER1 LED lights solid, which indicates that the device is reading from the settings file. 4. Remove the USB drive when the USER1 LED returns to blinking steadily. When the device connects to NI InsightCM Server, the server software automatically inserts the IP address of the device into the device configuration. In other words, you do not need to manually enter the IP address. In the next section, you will verify the device connected to the server successfully. 10 ni.com Getting Started with NI InsightCM Server
Verifying Device Connectivity After you send the connection information to the device, it automatically connects to NI InsightCM Server. Complete the following steps to verify that the device connects successfully: 1. In Systems Manager, click the Dashboard navigation button, and then click the Devices tab. Figure 7. Dashboard Page, Devices Tab 2. In the table of devices, verify that the Status column for the device contains Online, which means the device finished updating and connected successfully.
