5 Installing Your Gateway Server into a Rackmount Cabinet This guide provides the information you need to install your Gateway 960 or Gateway 980 server into a rackmount cabinet. Read this guide to learn how to: Convert a Gateway server into a rackmount configured server and install the server into a rackmount server cabinet. See Converting your server to a rackmount server on page 4. Install a Gateway pre-configured rackmount server into a rackmount server cabinet. See Installing your server into a rackmount cabinet on page 16. 1
6 Installing Your Gateway Server into a Rackmount Cabinet Identifying parts in the accessory kit There are two accessory kits for the Gateway 960 or Gateway 980 servers: Rackmount handle kit. 7 Safety-related rackmount installation instructions Safety-related rackmount installation instructions When your Gateway server is installed in a closed or multi-unit rackmount cabinet, make sure that you consider the following items: Ambient temperature The ambient temperature inside the rackmount cabinet may be greater than the ambient temperature in the room. Make sure that rackmount cabinet is ventilated so that your Gateway server operates within its specified maximum operating temperature range. For information about the maximum operating temperature, see the Environmental specifications section of your user s guide. The user s guide is on the Server Companion CD (SCCD) that shipped with your server. Stability Make sure that your Gateway server is stable in the rackmount cabinet and mounted according to the rackmount instructions in this installation guide. Input supply Check the power rating label on the back of your server to make sure that the power supply circuits are adequate for the server power requirements. Overloading the power supply circuits may affect the over-current protection and supply wiring. Grounding Make sure that your rackmount servers are correctly grounded. Pay particular attention to correctly grounding the power supply connections on power strips installed inside the rackmount cabinet. Disconnect device The plug on the power cord is the power disconnect device for your rackmount server. For safety purposes, make sure that the power outlet is installed near the rackmount cabinet for easy access. 3
8 Installing Your Gateway Server into a Rackmount Cabinet Converting your server to a rackmount server You can convert your Gateway 960 or Gateway 980 server to a rackmount server. Before converting your server, make sure that the server is on a stable work surface, such as a strong table or counter. Warning To avoid injury or damage to the server, we recommend that two people lift the server. Although your server configuration may vary from the server configuration shown in the following instructions, the general installation process will be similar. To convert your server to a rackmount server, you need to complete the following tasks in sequence: 1 Remove the front cover, side and top panels, and feet. 2 Remove and rotate the drives and EMI shields 90 degrees. 3 Rotate and install the front cover drive faceplates. 4 Install the rackmount handles. 5 Install the front cover and top panel. If your server came from Gateway pre-configured for rack installation, go to Installing your server into a rackmount cabinet on page 16. 4
9 Converting your server to a rackmount server Removing the front cover, top and side panels, and feet Tools you need to complete this task: Phillips screwdriver Needle-nose pliers To remove the front cover: 1 Turn off your server, then disconnect the power cord and all other cables connected to the server. 2 Unlock the Raid bay cover door, press the cover release latch on each side of the front cover, then pull the cover away from the case.
