2 Postgraduate Professional Practice Qualifications Whitireia and WelTec offer applicants the choice of three Professional Practice qualifications: Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Practice Master of Professional Practice These qualifications provide a framework for health and social practice professionals to advance their scholarship and capabilities. Working with diversity, interprofessional education and practice and leadership capability are particular foci. The qualifications are designed to offer an alternative to discipline-specific qualifications and augment clinical/vocational programmes of study. Take the opportunity to recalibrate your thinking by choosing courses that are relevant to your own professional context. Postgraduate Research Centre for Health & Social Practice The suite of Professional Practice qualifications (NZQA accredited) were developed by the Postgraduate Research Centre for Health and Social Practice, a collaboration between the Faculty of Health Te Kura Hauora at Whitireia Community Polytechnic (Whitireia) and the School of Health and Social Services (Te Hau Tapu me te Puna Oranga) at Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec). Blended Learning Methods The programmes use blended learning methods for delivery that combines face-to-face and online delivery. Blended learning provides increased flexibility for a study/work/life blend for postgraduate students, especially those in employment relevant to their programme of study. Student Support We are committed to our students' success and therefore offer a range of services to meet the learning needs of individual students. There is a designated distance librarian to support students and the new simulation suites provide state-of-the-art equipment for health professional skills and practice development. Complete the Application to Enrol form and send, along with a current CV (detailing your work history) and evidence of your previous qualifications (i.e. academic transcript) to the address below Information & Enrolment Centre, Whitireia New Zealand, DX SX33459, Porirua We will confirm receipt of your application. 3. Applicants who meet the academic entry criteria will be interviewed by the Programme Manager. Applications are processed in date order. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Whitireia has a process for recognising prior learning (RPL). 3 Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice The Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice provides health and social practice professionals a new model of higher level study to advance their knowledge and skills, thereby enhancing their practice and career progression. The curriculum design and programme structure supports students to engage in interprofessional learning at postgraduate level to advance and broaden their professional practice. This programme will extend your ability to work effectively in interprofessional teams and with enhanced leadership skills for the provision of quality services to diverse people and communities. Successful graduates may also gain credits towards Master s studies. Programme Information The Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice is a 60 credit programme where students choose their electives. Duration The Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Practice can be completed over six months (full time) or up to two years (part time). Entry Requirements Domestic: Bachelor s degree or equivalent experience International: IELTS 7.0 Academic, with no band below 6.5; or equivalent Special entry may be granted to an applicant who does not meet academic entry criteria; provided the Dean/Head of School is satisfied the applicant is capable of undertaking the course of study. 4 Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Practice The Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Practice provides health and social practice professionals a new model of higher level study to advance their knowledge and skills, thereby enhancing their practice and career progression. The curriculum design and programme structure supports students to engage in interprofessional learning at postgraduate level to advance and broaden their professional practice. This programme will enable you to gain specialised knowledge and leadership skills to work effectively in interprofessional teams for the provision of quality services to diverse people and communities. Successful graduates may also gain credits towards Master s studies. Programme Information The Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Practice is a 120 credit programme where students complete two compulsory courses (Research Methods for Health and Social Practice, and Advancing Professional Practice) and a further 60 credits from the electives below. Duration The Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Practice can be completed over 12 months (full time) or up to three years (part time). Entry requirements Domestic: International: Bachelor s degree or equivalent experience IELTS 7.0 Academic, with no band below 6.5; or equivalent Special entry may be granted to an applicant who does not meet academic entry criteria; provided the Dean/Head of School is satisfied the applicant is capable of undertaking the course of study. 5 Master of Professional Practice This programme provides health and social practice professionals a new model of higher level study to advance their knowledge and skills, thereby enhancing their practice and career progression. The curriculum design and programme structure supports students to engage in interprofessional learning at postgraduate level to advance and broaden their professional practice. Graduates will be capable to lead practice at an advanced, specialised level with the capability to work with diversity, be effective leaders of interprofessional teams for the provision of quality services to diverse people and communities. Programme Information The Master of Professional Practice is a 180 credit, Level 9 qualification. Students complete via one of two pathways: a thesis or a research project. Duration The Master of Professional Practice can be completed over 18 months (full time) or up to five years (part time). Fees, programmes and dates are subject to change 4
6 Endorsements The Master of Professional Practice has two optional endorsements in either Education or Leadership. Education Endorsement To achieve the education endorsement, the student undertakes a programme of study with a focus applied for professional practice with a minimum of 75 credits focused on education, including the Level 8 course Professional Education Practice and either the Level 9 Thesis or Praxis Research Project with an Education focus. Leadership Endorsement To achieve an endorsement in leadership, the student undertakes a programme of study that comprises a minimum of 75 credits focused on Leadership, including the Level 8 course Professional Leadership Practice and either the Level 9 Thesis or Praxis Research Project with a Leadership focus. Entry requirements Domestic: International: Bachelor s degree or equivalent with a B grade average at Level 7, and relevant practice in a related professional field IELTS 7.0 Academic, with no band below 6.5; or equivalent Special entry may be granted to an applicant who does not meet all entry criteria; provided the Dean/Head of School is satisfied the applicant is capable of undertaking the course of study. 7 Course Information Thesis (90 credits) Learn how to plan, execute and complete an original research project in the form of a thesis by demonstrating advanced knowledge in a field of professional practice. Praxis Research Project (45 credits) Learn how to plan, execute and complete a research project by demonstrating advanced knowledge in a field of professional practice, applying skills acquired during the study programme to solve a problem or problems. Research Methods for Health and Social Practice (30 credits) Explore the theoretical foundations of knowledge and research within the context of your professional practice. This course is designed to provide a practical experience of designing a research project in preparation for a Master thesis or research project. Diversity in Professional Practice (30 credits) Explore cultural, individual, family, community diversity in New Zealand, from a professional practice perspective. This course explores the theory and practice of inclusion at organisational, managerial, leadership, team work group levels, supervision and consultation. Advancing Professional Practice (30 credits) In an interprofessional environment engage in professional dialogue to analyse the theoretical constructs of professionalism, and provide evidence based solutions and strategies for working in complex contemporary work and service delivery environments. Professional Education Practice (30 credits) Examine your learning and teaching practice against contemporary theory and pedagogy, with a focus on the interprofessional context. Demonstrate capability and leadership in education practice, utilising contemporary pedagogy and an understanding of working with diversity Professional Leadership Practice (30 credits) Examine your skills, knowledge and practice and the ability to lead self and others in professional, interprofessional and organisational settings. Demonstrate capability in leadership in the professional context based on contemporary theory and practice. Clinical Topic (15 credits) Develop an advanced understanding of specialist clinical practice and related issues. Demonstrate praxis by articulating the relationships between theory and clinical, including ethical considerations. Simulation Practice (15 credits) Examine contemporary evidence based approaches to simulation and its use in professional practice, including clinical education. Explore the pedagogy of simulation practice and strategies for simulation in an interprofessional environment. Special Topic I (15 credits) Advance your praxis in relation to a particular area of professional interest. Critically examine a chosen topic, draw conclusions and disseminate findings. Special Topic II (30 credits) Examine a particular topic or issue related to your professional practice Analyse the topic, including the socio-political environment, diversity, and interprofessional practice using current research, and disseminate findings in a professional forum. Policy for Professional Practice (30 credits) Gain the knowledge and skills to analyse and develop policy relevant to your professional context. Critically examine relevant legislation and how it informs contemporary policy and practice. Fees, programmes and dates are subject to change 6
8 Partnering with Māori in Health and Social Practice (30 credits) Develop a critical understanding of professional practice frameworks when authentically partnering with Māori. This course assists you to partner effectively with Māori, whānau, hapū and iwi through an understanding of concepts and values that protect and strengthen Māori wellbeing. Working with Pacific Peoples (30 credits) Utilise conceptual frameworks to explore cultural diversity amongst Pacific peoples. This course will assist you to work effectively and inclusively with Pacific individuals, families and communities through an understanding of concepts and values that protect and strengthen family wellbeing. Information Management (15 credits) Develop a managerial perspective on the strategic use of information systems (IS) in organisations in order to manage information as a critical resource through planning, developing, implementing and evaluating information. Governance (15 credits) Evaluate and critically analyse the complex relationships between organisations, boards of directors and diverse stakeholders.
