1 Sustainable Decision-making: the price and promise of public participation IAP2 Pre-Conference Training September 18 20, 2009 All training will be held at the conference venue: Westin San Diego 400 West Broadway, San Diego, CA, USA. Closing date for registrations is August 31, 2009 The International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) presents pre-conference training at its 2009 International Conference in San Diego, California, USA. The 2009 conference theme is Sustainable Decision-making: the price and promise of public participation and the conference will expand the definition of sustainability to encompass all the characteristics that make decision-making processes and the resulting decisions sustainable. Pre-conference training will reflect the conference themes. World-class trainers will offer sessions that will improve participant s knowledge, skills, and confidence in public participation, facilitation, conflict resolution, and include training for social media and Web 2.0 applications relevant to building public consensus and citizen/stakeholder participation. This year s pre-conference training is designed for a variety of student experience levels but particularly geared to experienced practitioners.

2 The International Association for Public Participation and its members help organizations and communities around the world improve their decisions by involving the people who are affected by those decisions. 3 IAP2 Certificate Training Communication for Effective Public Participation Date: Friday, September 18 Member Early Bird: $ USD Non Member Early Bird: $ USD Member: $ USD Non Member: $ USD This one-day module in IAP2 s Certificate Program in Public Participation offers an overview of the communication skills used by public participation practitioners. The course provides an introduction to communication skills and models. It introduces the Principles of Authentic Communications and focuses on tools used to prepare and present information materials in a variety of forms, small and large group interaction models and facilitation essentials. The 8-hour course is designed as a primer and is suitable for beginning to intermediate level practitioners and those who want a review of basic communication techniques. Interactive exercises and practical tips are used to enliven the basic theory and reference materials presented throughout the day and reinforce skills that participants can put to immediate use. Participants learn the elements needed to prepare communication plans and to practice active listening. They gain an understanding of the essentials of risk communication, making effective written and verbal presentations and working with mass media. Students get practical experience in applying the skills they ve learned in Planning for Effective Public Participation Programs and take home a comprehensive student manual and IAP2 s Program Planning Tool. This capstone tool can be used to capture a public participation project s planning, implementing and evaluation information in one easy reference document. Note: The Planning for Effective Public Participation module is a prerequisite for this course. 4 IAP2 Learning Framework Outrage, Emotion, and Public Engagement Date: Friday, September 18 Saturday, September 19 (8:30-4:30 pm) Member Early Bird: $ USD Non Member Early Bird: $ USD Member: $ USD Non Member: $ USD Participants will increase awareness of how outrage hinders public engagement and how to plan for its management in public participation; learn and apply principles, approaches, and strategies for dealing with emotion and outrage in public engagement; practice applying the principles, strategies and approaches and prepare for upcoming challenges. After taking this course, participants will understand and learn how to identify outrage and its causes in public engagement situations. 5 IAP2 Certificate Training Techniques for Effective Public Participation Date: Saturday, September 19 Sunday, September 20 (8:30 4:30 pm) Member Early Bird: $ USD Non Member Early Bird: $ USD Member: $ USD Non Member: $ USD This two-day module in IAP2 s Certificate Program in Public Participation provides an introduction to a range of practical tools and techniques used at all five levels of IAP2 s Public Participation Spectrum. It gives course participants an opportunity to try out or observe a number of specific techniques including World Cafe, Interviews, Samoan Circle, Citizens Jury and Advisory Group. It includes overviews of more than 20 tools and techniques tested and used by public participation practitioners around the globe. The course is designed as a primer and is suitable for beginning to intermediate level practitioners and those who want a review of basic group process techniques. Interactive exercises and practical tips are used to enliven the basic theory and reference materials presented throughout the two-day session and reinforce skills that participants can put to immediate use. Students learn how to create effective forums for dialogue and how to avoid the many problems encountered in traditional public meetings. Students leave this module armed with a detailed student manual covering the course materials and a packet of IAP2 Tipsheets offering practical advice for selecting, using and evaluating a broad range of public participation activities. Note: The Planning for Effective Public Participation module is a prerequisite for this course. 6 SpeakOut!: Design and Management of SpeakOuts Date: Saturday, September 19 Sunday, September 20 (8:30-4:30 pm) Member Early Bird: $ USD Non Member Early Bird: $ USD Member: $ USD Non Member: $ USD This practical, hands-on course introduces the SpeakOut community engagement model, providing participants with the knowledge and skills to select, design, conduct and evaluate SpeakOut processes for different target populations. They will learn to locate a project within a conceptual community engagement framework and select appropriate SpeakOut designs, displays and exercises. This course would be useful as it aims to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to select, design, conduct and evaluate SpeakOut processes which: Involve direct contact with community members Aim to be creative as well as representative Involve a wide cross-section of a community and Are effective. Presenters: Wendy Sarkissian and Wiwik Bunjamin-Mau Wendy Sarkissian, widely acknowledged as a leading authority in community engagement, has co-authored seven books on community engagement, including Kitchen Table Sustainability (Earthscan, 2008) and SpeakOut: A Step-by-step Guide to SpeakOuts and Community Workshops (Earthscan, 2009). A third Earthscan book is in print. She is Adjunct Professor, School of Sustainable Development, Bond University, Queensland. Indonesian-born Wiwik Bunjamin-Mau, a qualified community and social planner, is co-author of a book on SpeakOuts and community engagement with Wendy Sarkissian, SpeakOut: A Step-by-step Guide to SpeakOuts and Community Workshops (Earthscan, 2009). After a careeras a community facilitator who utilizes the arts as engagement tool, she is establishing a community engagement consulting firm in Honolulu. 6

7 Social Media: Improving the Sustainable Decision Making Process Date: Sunday, September 20 (8:30-4:30 pm) Member Early Bird: $ USD Non Member Early Bird: $ USD Member: $ USD Non Member: $ USD The course will provide both an overview and step-by-step instruction of the most prevalent social media applications (to include: blogs, Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Ning). Attendees will learn how to use social media tools to increased Web traffic, increase business and generate revenue. IAP2 s core beliefs encourage members to include the community in making sustainable decisions. By participating in social media, where a two-way, open conversation is not only possible, but required for success, IAP2 s community can capitalize on a powerful platform to voice their opinions and discuss concerns with the community. These conversations can aid and change the way decisions are made. Communities will have the benefit of feeling that their voices are heard and IAP2 members will have a platform to control their messages to the people. What better way can there be to make sustainable decisions than to ask those who will be directly affected by those decisions. Presenter: Jennifer Mitchell Jennifer Mitchell provides social media consulting/public relations services that align with the changing needs of corporations in the exceedingly online/social world. Jennifer draws on her seven plus years experience from agencies including McQuerter Group and Mentus as well as Qualcomm where she implemented the new media program for QIS. 7
