1 Short biography The 11th Annual Bergen Educational Conversation Herner Saeverot is professor of education at the Department of education, Western Norway University in Bergen, Norway. He is also professor II at NLA University College in Oslo, Norway. His primary research interests include education and risks, existential education, and Literature and Education. His research is both theoretically and empirically grounded. Professor Saeverot has published widely in refereed academic periodicals (his latest article is: «An Alternative Model of Researching Educational Practice: A Pedagogic- Stereoscopic Point of View» (2019). British Educational Research Journal, 45(1), ISSN ). He has also published several books (his latest book is: Education and the Limits of Reason: Reading Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, and Nabokov (2018, in collaboration with Peter Roberts). New York & London: Routledge. ISBN ). Professor Saeverot has extensive editing experience. Since 2014 he has been the editor-in-chief of the international journal Nordic Studies in Education. He is the main editor of several special issues, including Existentialism and Education (a special issue of the journal Studies in Philosophy and Education, 32(1), New York, Springer, 2013). Professor Saeverot serves on the editorial panels of several international journals, and reviews for many others. From 2013 he has been a permanent member of the editorial board for the journal Studies in Philosophy and Education. He has chaired numerous committees and working groups, held significant university leadership positions, and supervised several dozen Doctoral and Masters theses and dissertations to completion. Professor Saeverot is the founder and director of PedLab, and project leader for several research projects, including «Artist-Led Learning in Higher Education» (ALL), funded by EU (Erasmus+, Euro). He is also an elected member of the University Commission on Liberal Arts Reform at the University of Bergen, and is the founder and convenor of The Annual Bergen Educational Conversation (an international conference founded in 2009). In 2019 he was appointed member of The Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters and All European Academics (ALLEA). Gert Biesta is currently Professor of Public Education in the Centre for Public Education and Pedagogy at Maynooth University, Ireland, and NIVOZ Professor for Education at the University of Humanistic Studies, the Netherlands. He is Visiting Professor at the University of Agder, Norway, working across the departments of education, mental health and the arts. His work focuses on the theory of education and the theory and philosophy of social and educational research. Recent books include The Beautiful Risk of Education 1
2 (2014); The Rediscovery of Teaching (2017); Obstinate Education: Reconnecting School and Society (2019); Educational Research: An Unorthodox Introduction (2019). Birgitte Freiesleben de Blasio is currently Director for Department of Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Modelling at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, Norway and Professor II at Department of Biostatistics at the University of Oslo, Norway. She has a background in theoretical physics and is a specialist in infectious disease modeling. Her research is focused on understanding infectious disease dynamics, and on evaluating disease prevention strategies. Recent areas of interests include influenza, antibiotic resistance, in particular, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Colin Butler has worked on environmental and development issues for over three decades, focussing on overpopulation, overconsumption, environmental degradation, inequality and risk. He has contributed, often as activist outlier, to many interdisciplinary, international projects including the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment. In 1989 he co-founded two development-promoting NGOs ( which work with partners in low-income settings, mainly in India. In 2009 he was named as one of a hundred doctors for the planet by the French Environmental Health Association. Monika Böhm is a Conservation Biologist and Research Fellow at the Institute of Zoology of the Zoological Society of London. Her primary research interest focuses assessing global patterns in extinction risk and threats to biodiversity, most recently through the use of the Sampled Red List Index (SRLI), derived from the IUCN Red List Index. Among the questions she addresses are: Which taxa are most threatened? Where can we find areas of high threat levels to resident biodiversity? What are the major threats which biodiversity is facing globally and locally? She is also involved in the National Red List project ( which encourages the development of National Red LIsts for conservation planning and climate change vulnerability assessments for reptiles, among other projects. She holds an MRes in Ecology and Environmental Management and a PhD in Environmental Science, both from the University of York. Her peer-reviewed studies appear in the top ecology and conservation science journals, including Biological Conservation, Conservation Biology, Ecography, Global Ecology and Biogeography and many others. Marius Dybwad is a Principal Scientist and Research Manager at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment FFI, Kjeller, Norway. Dybwad is also a Visiting Senior Lecturer at King s College London and holds a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and a M.Sc. in Molecular Medicine from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology NTNU, Trondheim, Norway. Dr. Dybwad is an internationally recognized expert on biological aerosols and biological detection, and has been involved in numerous research projects at FFI in the field of biological warfare agents, biological defence, biological security, microbiology, and molecular biology, including several European Defence 2
3 Agency (EDA), European Commision (EU), and North Atlantic Threaty Organization (NATO) projects. Halvor Kippe holds an M.Sc. in experimental particle physics from the University of Oslo. He is currently a Principal Scientist with the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) at Kjeller outside Oslo, and a board member with the Norwegian Institute for Safety and Security since Kippe has worked at FFI since 2003, specializing in less-lethal weapons, radiological security issues, nuclear non-proliferation, nuclear weapons disarmament verification, and nuclear and missile export controls. He is an expert on the nuclear and missile programmes of Iran and North Korea, with more than 150 citations, interviews, and podcasts in Norwegian radio, TV, and news outlets. In the period 2010 through 2013, he was a visiting lecturer at the Center for Accelerator-Based Research and Energy Physics with the University of Oslo on the subject of nuclear technology. Kippe took part in the UK Norway Initiative on Nuclear Weapons Disarmament Verification, and was in 2010 a coauthor of the book Cultivating Confidence Verification, Monitoring, and Enforcement for a World Free of Nuclear Weapons, published by the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI). Louise McRae is a Research Associate based at the Institute of Zoology of the Zoological Society of London. Her interests lie in tackling the complexities of measuring biodiversity change and communicating that in a straightforward way to the public and for policy. For the past 13 years she has primarily been working in partnership with WWF on the development and implementation of the Living Planet Index, a global biodiversity indicator ( In that time she has also contributed to WWF s biennial Living Planet Report, a publication with a global reach reporting the state of the natural world, and provided indicators for the Convention on Biological Diversity through the Biodiversity Indicators Partnership. She was also a lead author on the biodiversity chapter of the sixth Global Environment Outlook and has contributed to other policy-focussed reports including the IPBES global assessment and the Global Biodiversity Outlook series. Stig Rune Sellevåg holds the position as Principal Scientist at the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI). He has a Ph.D. in physical chemistry from University of Oslo, Norway (2005). Sellevåg has been working at FFI since 2009 and is an expert on chemical weapons and societal security. Sellevåg is the author of several scientific papers in international peer-reviewed journals and has been involved in numerous national and international research projects on protection against chemical weapons. Sellevåg was deployed for three months in as Scientific Advisor for the Royal Norwegian Navy during Operation RECSYR (Removal of Chemical Agents from Syria). Marija Slavkovik is currently an associate professor at the Department of Information Science and Media Studies at the University of Bergen in the Logic, Information and Interaction Group. She has primarily pubished in the field of AI, mostly in the topics of collective reasoning and machine ethics. Slavkovik is also 3
4 vice-chair of the Norwegian AI Association, in the board of EURAMAS, an associate editor of the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Review and a member of the informal advisorygroup on Ethics, Legal, Social Issues (ELS) of CLAIRE. Ron Thompson is currently a Principal Research Fellow in the School of Education and Professional Development. His research interests lie in two main areas: the relationships between social class, educational inequality and social (im)mobility; and teacher education for the lifelong learning sector. The first of these areas currently involves research into theorisations of class in the work of Pierre Bourdieu, Basil Bernstein and Raymond Boudon, together with ongoing ethnographic studies of the long-term trajectories of young people not in education, employment and training. In July 2012 he was awarded the Ian Martin Prize for Social Justice in Education. His latest book, Education, Inequality and Social Class, was published by Routledge in March Glenn-Egil Torgersen is Professor of Education at the Norwegian Defence University College. He is also Professor II in Education at the University of Southeast Norway, Center of Emergency Preparedness and Integrated Crisis Management. He was formerly a senior researcher in the Department of Man, Technology and Organization at the Institute for Energy Technology. He holds a PhD in Psychology from Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, and a Master s Degree in Educational Science at University of Oslo. In addition, he is a qualified lecturer (Docent) in Organization and Management, and has teaching qualifications in natural science. Key research interests are pedagogical theory construction and practical implications for learning and training design, specifically aimed at professional education in general and emergency-preparedness organizations in particular, in the context of risk, the unforeseen, cyber threats, inter-professional and crossorganizational interaction. His research work also includes pedagogical and methodological studies in tutoring, leadership and multimedia learning. He is Member of the Academy of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters, and has been responsible for several research projects and scientific publications and anthologies, including Pedagogy for the Unforeseen (2015). Jennifer West is a Research Director and senior social scientist at the Center for International Climate Research Oslo, where she co-leads a multidisciplinary team of researchers who are working to devise actionable solutions to the challenges that climate change represents for society. She has more than 15 years of interdisciplinary research experience working at the intersection between climate change impacts, vulnerability and adaptation, natural resource management and international development in different parts of the world. In addition to considerable research experience from Africa, she has worked extensively on local climate vulnerability, adaptation and transformation processes in coastal areas of Norway, has conducted field research in rural India and China, and is involved in several EU projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing social science contributions to climate services research and innovation. Key aims of her current research are to understand the potentials and limitations for societal transformation at the local level and to improve the 4
5 practical relevance and impact of climate information and services for various stakeholders. In addition to co-leading the Local Solutions research group at CICERO, she is a co-initiator and co-leader of the Action Group Enabling Societal Transformations in the face of Climate Change within the European Joint Programming Initiative "Connecting Climate Knowledge for Europe" (JPI Climate). She is also an appointed Expert Team Member of the WMO Commission for Climatology Focus Area 4 "Capacity Development for Climate Services. 5
