3 Established in 1898, Peking University was originally named the Imperial University of Peking. It was the first national comprehensive university in China, as well as the supreme administrative organization for education in China at that time. It was in 1912 that the University adopted its present name. As the precursor of modern Chinese universities, Peking university stood at the center of China s New Culture Movement, formed as the cradle of the May 4th Movement, which advocated democracy and science in China in the early 1900 s.
