1 University of Nigeria, Nigeria Background Information The University of Nigeria was established as the first indigenous and autonomous university in Nigeria to serve as an engine of socio-economic development of the country, it is well positioned to play a leading role in Higher Education in Nigeria and Africa. Her population of over 5,000 postgraduates found in 15 faculties and 71 academic programmes where 211 postgraduate programmes are domiciled, properly position her to champion human capacity development in Nigeria and Africa. Over the years, the university has pioneered curriculum innovation and reform in higher education, such as in Agriculture, Education, Engineering, Medical Sciences, Natural Sciences, Communication and information Sciences and others. There exist several courses at postgraduate level on human capital development, environmental management and sustainability. 2 PhD programmes available for selection: PhD in Climate Change Economics Policy and Innovation PhD in Agricultural Economics PhD in Fisheries Biology PhD in Parasitology PhD in Physiology PhD in Entomology PhD in Power Devices PhD in Power Systems 1) PhD in Climate Change Economics Policy and Innovation Objectives: The aim of this postgraduate programme is to sensitize the society to effectively weigh the evidence regarding global climate change as it confronts the challenges. Develop innovative policies and technologies that would proffer solutions to a sustainable and prosperous future Equip students with higher level of thinking such as an understanding of climate science, climate impacts, climate politics, climate economics, climate policies and laws, climate ethics and equity. Structure and content (i.e. subjects covered): The degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department should primarily be by research. In addition the Department s post graduate committee may prescribe some courses of not more than 12 credit units to be taken by the candidate. A Doctoral (PhD) Thesis of 12 units must be defended before a panel of examiners. 3 2) PhD in Agricultural Economics with specialisations: 1. Agricultural Finance and Project Analysis 2. Agricultural Marketing and Agribusiness 3. Farm Management and Production Economics 4. Agricultural Cooperatives Objectives: The primary objective of the programme is to equip students with theoretical and practical tools required to apply themselves usefully to the nation s agricultural sector and the general economy. Consequently, the students are exposed to research methodology, applied theory, applied quantitative techniques, traditional agricultural economics areas like farm management, production economics, agricultural finance, marketing, rural development and cooperatives Scope: Courses are offered to students pursuing their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degree. The students are exposed to both the theoretical concepts and field/research studies in general agriculture. Students should be able to apply their knowledge of theories to agricultural production decisions. Structure and content (i.e. subjects covered): The degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department should primarily be by research. This research is to be embodied in a thesis but candidates may be required to take assigned courses depending on their background. Learning outcomes: Students will be properly equipped to make policies in Agriculture and to effectively manage agricultural projects and programmes. The changing rainfall patterns and water use has serious impacts on the sustainability of our freshwater fisheries and aquaculture. Ph.D Fisheries Biology program is developed to expose the students to how sustainable, well managed fisheries can be achieved in the face of climate change. To equip students with adequate practical knowledge that will enable them be self reliant and captains of agro-aquacultural, environmental and human development industries. To equip students with adequate research techniques that will enable them function as research officers in agro-aquacultural and environmental sectors of both national and global economies. To give adequate, effective and resourceful training needed for the national and international production of high quality, competent and competitive fishery biologist that possesses the attitude, character and attributes essential for building the global economies to excellent level of societal development. Structure and content:

4 The PhD programme is purely by research with a minimum of four seminar presentation built in and is has a minimum duration of six semesters. The credit unit for PhD is 24. Title Research Proposal Progress report on research Seminar on current issues in Fishery Biology/ Aquaculture Research project in Fishery Biology/ Aquaculture Units 24 units Assessment methods will include scores from: (1) continuous assessment of progress report on research by internal examiners (30 %). (2) Internal and external examiners examination of thesis (70%). Learning outcome: Graduates of Fisheries Biology with CGPA of 3.5 and above are offered admission into the PhD program. Those with lower GPA may repeat the Ph.D programme. Graduates can find employment in different specialized sectors of the national and global economy. Relatively few of these sectors include; aquaculture facilities, Institute of Marine and Oceanographic Research, Institute of Freshwater Fish Research, Institute of Topical Agriculture, fisheries unit of Ministry of Agriculture, veterinary clinics, Food and Agricultural Organization, Food and Drugs Administration Agencies, Pollution and Environmental Protection Agencies, environmental impact assessment facilities, wild life and games resorts, zoological parks, biodiversity prospecting projects, petrochemical industries (Oil and Gas industries) etc. Recognition and accreditation obtained: The program has been approved by the Senate, University of Nigeria and given full accreditation by the National University Commission, Abuja, Nigeria. 4) Ph.D Parasitology Objective (around 150 words): Climate Change exerts significant influence on the emergence and proliferation of malaria and zoonotic parasitic diseases, including, leishmaniasis, cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis, trypanosomiasis, schistosomiasis, lariasis, onchocerciasis, loiasis, etc. Climate Change, changes the ecological balance and context within which disease hosts or vectors and parasites breed, develop and transmit disease. These have serious consequences on disease management, vector control and efficacy of chemotherapy. Ph.D Parasitology program is developed to expose the students to how relatively diseases free individuals, thus communities can be achieved in the face of climate change. Students are equipped with adequate practical knowledge in parasitology and public health that will enable them be self reliant and captains of public health, medical, pharmaceutical and human development industries. Furthermore, students are armed with adequate research techniques that will enable them function as research officers in public health, medical and pharmaceutical sectors of both national and global economies. They are given adequate, effective and resourceful training needed for the national and international production of high quality, competent and competitive parasitologist that

5 possesses the attitude, character and attributes essential for building the global health to excellent level of societal development. Climate change changes the ecological and physiological balance and thus exposes the animal to stress related disease. These have serious consequences on animal distribution and abundance, physiological adaptations to environmental changes, disease management, vector control and efficacy of chemotherapy. Ph.D Physiology program is developed to expose the students to how physiologically

6 well-adapted animals can be maintained in the face of climate change. Students are equipped with adequate practical knowledge in physiology that will enable them be self reliant and captains of biomedical, pharmaceutical and human development industries. Furthermore, students are armed with adequate research techniques that will enable them function as research officers in bio-medical, public health, medical and pharmaceutical sectors of both national and global economies. They are given adequate, effective and resourceful training needed for the national and international production of high quality, competent and competitive physiologist that possesses the attitude, character and attributes essential for maintaining the physiological balance-state of animal and humans to excellent level of societal development. 7 6) PhD Entomology Objective: The mission of PhD Entomology programme is to acquire, produce and disseminate scientific knowledge and technology and to develop scientific pioneers and leaders in the entomological sciences. Ph.D entomology program is developed to expose the students on how entomological knowledge and technologies can be used to advanced human development in the areas of agriculture, medicine and environmental safety in the face of climate change. Students are equipped with adequate practical knowledge in entomology that will enable them be self reliant and captains of agricultural, biomedical, pharmaceutical and human development industries. Furthermore, students are armed with adequate research techniques that will enable them function as research officers in agricultural, biomedical, public health, medical and pharmaceutical sectors of both national and global economies. They are given adequate, effective and resourceful training needed for the national and international production of high quality, competent and competitive entomologist that possesses the attitude, character and attributes essential for advancement of human development in the areas of agriculture, medicine and environmental sciences using entomology principles and techniques. Structure and content: The PhD programme is purely by research with a minimum of four seminar presentation built in and is has a minimum duration of six semesters. The credit unit for PhD is 24. 8 The program has been approved by the Senate, University of Nigeria and given full accreditation by the National University Commission, Abuja, Nigeria. 7) PhD in Power Devices (Electrical Engineering) Objectives: The POWER DEVICES unit of the Electrical Engineering Department of University of Nigeria, Nsukkka trains competent candidates for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D). The aim of the program is to completely expose the candidate to in-depth research methods in any of the three areas of energy conversion, electrical machines or power electronics. Course works of not more than 12 units can be prescribed depending on the deficiency of the candidate evidenced from his/her academic records from a Masters program. No coursework is needed for candidate with a very well taught Masters degree and intends to continue in the same area in doctoral studies. The main research theme is thoroughly discussed amongst the Power Devices group offering the program and fashioned in a way that will lead to achievable results. Available research facilities are usually weighed against research themes. Clearly planned research is therefore the main thrust of the program. Candidates are required to give a seminar at least twice in a semester to show progress being made in the assigned research area. Presently, the following staff supervise Ph.D degree research in Power Devices: Structure and Content: Courses taught: Eleven (11) courses are offer of which each has three (3) credit units. Depending on the deficiency of a candidate s masters degree, he/she is expected to take a maximum of three courses as prescribed by a supervisor from: Theory and Modeling of Electrical Machines, Power Semiconductor Devices and circuits, Energy and Environmental Management, Renewable Energy, Advanced Switching Circuits, Advanced Logic Systems, Special Topics in Electrical Machines, Electromagnetic Fields and Waves, Electroheating Processes, Design of Electrical Machines. Assessment is of varying modes: Coursework based Ph.D are assessed by homeworks, class quizzes and written examinations (each can be paper-based or computer-based). The results are however not used in the final assessment for the award of Ph.D degree but as a mid-term measure of preparedness of the candidate for firm registration of the Ph.D program. Additionally, the candidate makes as many presentations on the outcomes his/her research as required before the board of internal examiners at the departmental and faculty levels. A synopsis of the entire work done has to be developed and presented for approval by the School of Postgraduate Studies. The candidate finally presents the thesis showing a significant contribution to knowledge before a competent external examiner from a different university and if successful, is awarded a Ph.D in Power Devices. Learning Outcomes: A candidate that earns a Ph.D degree in Power Devices is well qualified to undertake teaching and research activities in a university, research institute or head a research and development (R&D) unit of a manufacturing industry. Such a candidate has the full capability of providing academic leadership to students, being a specialist consultant to industries that manufactures electrical parts, electrical installation companies, oil and gas establishments, development of new products, capable of heading design and maintenance units of related establishments, etc. In Nigeria, such jobs are always available and the candidates are readily sought for.

9 Recognition and accreditation obtained: This program is recognized and accredited by the Council for Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), operates under the IEEE standards and is fully accredited by and operates within the minimum benchmark standard of the National Universities Commission (NUC). The program has been operational since ) PhD in Power Systems (Electrical Engineering) Objectives: The POWER SYSTEMS unit of the Electrical Engineering Department of University of Nigeria, Nsukkka trains competent candidates for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D). The aim of the program is to completely expose the candidate to in-depth research methods in either High Voltage or Power Systems Analysis. Course works of not more than 12 units can be prescribed depending on the deficiency of the candidate evidenced from his/her academic records from a Masters program.
