2 2 / 7 Instructions for Applicants in Connection with Appointments of Academically Qualified Teaching Staff Other than Professors (For Example Assistant Senior Lecturers, Senior Lecturers) The Faculty of Arts has established the following application procedure for appointments of academically qualified teaching staff, such as assistant senior lecturers, senior lecturers, postdoctoral research fellows or postdocs. The applicant shall report the qualifications he/she wishes to refer to in four different portfolios: one for scholarly qualifications, one for pedagogical qualifications, one for qualifications relating to managerial and administrative skills, and one for popular science work including research information and cooperation with the surrounding community. In addition to reporting qualifications in the attached portfolios, the applicant should attach two texts describing his/her scholarly and pedagogical activities. The scholarly account shall specify the scholarly relevance of the applicant s research results, and the findings should also be presented in an international perspective. In the pedagogical account, the applicant is expected to describe and reflect upon his/her pedagogical work. In addition to the applicant s doctoral thesis and any authored teaching material, the applicant is expected to submit a maximum of ten publications, unless the advertisement specifies a different number. These publications constitute part of the documentation for assessing both scholarly and pedagogical proficiency. The Faculty Board of Arts takes a positive view of the submitted publications including publications of a pedagogical and subject didactic nature. The following documents should be submitted with the application: A description of scholarly and pedagogical work A list of completed degrees and previous employment Qualifications portfolio I: Scholarly qualifications Qualifications portfolio II: Pedagogical qualifications Qualifications portfolio III: Qualifications related to managerial and administrative tasks Qualifications portfolio IV: Qualifications related to cooperation with the surrounding community The publications and academic works that the applicant wishes to be considered. Assessment Scholarly proficiency must have been demonstrated through the candidate s own research involving complex and demanding issues, significant theoretical awareness, a great deal of methodological proficiency and a high degree of analytical ability.

3 3 / 7 Scholarly qualifications must be demonstrated through substantial publication, in the form of monographs and contributions to anthologies and/or journals that have been peer reviewed prior to publication. The qualification requirements include having been published in a variety of scientific journals, as well as significant parts of the applicant s output having been published within the last seven years. There should be important contributions to the international scientific community, although these should take into consideration the traditions and conditions of the subject. Another relevant qualification is that the applicant is active and has the confidence of the research community. This can be demonstrated via received external research grants or previous assignments as a faculty examiner/student reviewer in connection with public defences of theses, as a member of an examining committee, or as an expert in connection with nominations for academic positions or peer reviewing of articles and books prior to publication. Pedagogical proficiency should be founded on broad and varied experience at all levels of education. Pedagogical proficiency is assessed based on the scope and breadth of the teaching experience, the extent to which the applicant has planned and developed courses at different levels, and the applicant s experience of supervising students at different levels. The applicant s pedagogical proficiency shall be documented through authoring of teaching material, and/or completed course development and a capacity for conveying knowledge confirmed through service certificates, together with a written self-evaluation. Proficiency within management and administration is demonstrated through a good ability to lead, plan and develop operations. This includes advanced duties such as management of research and education projects, assignments as director of studies and head of department, and holding positions on boards and committees. The ability to cooperate with the surrounding community is demonstrated through assignments in relation to the public sector, culture and industry, as well as through popular science activities and participation in public debate. Dealing with applications In the case of both new employment and internal promotion, the basic aim of assessing qualifications is, with the guidance of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance and issued guidelines, to determine whether an applicant has sufficient documented proficiency and competence to be able to carry out the relevant work tasks well. In the case of internal promotion, the purpose of assessing qualifications is to establish whether the applicant meets these requirements. In the case of new employment involving multiple applicants, a comparison shall also be made between the applicants who should be considered in the first instance.

4 4 / 7 In the case of recruitment through advertising, the chair of the Teaching Staff Recruitment Board appoints one or two experts on recommendation by the respective Head of Department. Applications for promotion to professor are first reviewed by the Teaching Staff Recruitment Board, which then determines whether experts should be appointed. If the Board finds this to be appropriate, the chair is in charge of appointing the expert(s). The Teaching Staff Recruitment Board reviews the expert assessments and submits a recommendation to the Vice-Chancellor, who makes the final appointment decision. Publications Publications should be listed in bullet point form only; state the year of publication, ISBN/ISSN and the number of pages. As a basis for assessing pedagogical proficiency, references, service certificates and other written subjective opinions should be attached, together with course evaluation summaries and follow-ups. Assignments in relation to the public sector, culture and industry a) Appearances and lectures b) Interviews and debates c) Other: Here, activities that contribute to the interaction between the scientific community and the rest of society should be presented.
