1 Leslie London Professor Leslie London is Chair of Public Health Medicine in the School of Public Health and Family Medicine at the University of Cape Town for which he served as Director from 2007 to He heads the Division of Public Health Medicine and as an active member of the Centre for Occupational and Environmental Health Research, in which he leads research in the areas of pesticide hazards and chemical neurotoxicity, farm worker occupational health, and occupational and environmental epidemiology. He is also head of the Health and Human Rights Programme in the School which has a broad research and training mandate addressing health as a socio-economic right, and examining human rights and ethical issues in relation to the practice of occupational health professionals, including the practice of dual loyalty at the workplace. He has served on national and international committees dealing with ethics and human rights in research and professional contexts, has provided advice to the AIDS Law Project in test cases related to workplace discrimination against People Living with HIV/AIDS and is active in the People s Health Movement South Africa. He was a member of the National Health Research Ethics Council for the Department of Health from 2006 to He has given frequent talks on ethical matters to meetings of health professionals and scientific organisations including SASOM, the Association of Medical Councils of Southern Africa and many international congresses. He serves on the Scientific Committees on Rural Health and on Neurotoxicology for the International Commission on Occupational Health, and coordinated the Africa Group for ICOH s revision of its Ethical Code. As part of an international Working Group on Dual Loyalty, he and his collaborators developed an international guideline for the protection of patient rights in the context of high-risk closed institutions. He has published over 150 articles in peer-reviewed international and national journals and 15 books or book chapters, and is an NRF-rated scientist in the B3 category. He has been PI on several large grants over the past 10 years, including funding from SIDA, NIH, EU and IDRC, raising in total more than ZAR 35 million in research funding whilst at UCT. 2 Claudina M C A Nogueira Claudina Nogueira has worked in Occupational Health for 25 years and holds BSc, BSc (Hons) and MSc (Medical Biochemistry) degrees from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, and Modules in Occupational Hygiene from the British Examination Board in Occupational Hygiene (BEBOH). Prior to 2011, she was employed at the National Institute for Occupational Health (NIOH; South Africa s major centre for occupational health development, training, service support and research), as a Medical Natural Scientist in a research post ( ); and as Head of Section: Communication, Training and International Liaison ( ). More recently, Claudina has held the post of Senior Health and Safety Advisor at the global mining company Anglo American s Technical Solutions division, in Operations Support: Sustainable Development and Civil Engineering, in Johannesburg ( ). 3 William Murray Coombs Dr Coombs completed his medical degree and followed a career in emergency, aviation medicine and occupational medicine. He was nominated onto the executive of the SA Society of Occupational Medicine (SASOM) in He led a SASOM team in developing the first SA text on biological monitoring; this led to his appointment as consulting pathologist in Occupational Medicine. He was invited to join the scientific committees of the International Commission on Occupational Health Pesticides and Agriculture. He was nominated to the International Chemical Industry Occupational Health Board (Medichem) in During 2000 he became a board member of the International Commission of Occupational Health, now Chairman of Medichem. He spearheaded the review of the ICOH ethics guideline. He investigated Occupational Health and HIV/AIDS risks for Unilever operating in 13 African countries. From this project the company received a global award for their HIV/AIDS response, the methodology was taken up as a best practice by the World Economic Forum (WEF). Dr Coombs is a consultant to Dow and Unilever covering Africa, Middle East and Europe. During 2010 Murray joined the UN health task force as Private Sector representative in a review of HIV/AIDS, Malaria and TB. Murray continues to serves as President of Medichem, Chairman of the SA American Chamber of Business Health Forum, consulting pathologist and active SASOM member. He plays a role in both companies and international organizations to ensure the independence of health professionals in business and thereby assure professional ethical conduct. [email protected] 3

4 Eric Gcilitshana Mr Gcilitshana began his working career in the Lonmin Platinum Mine as a general labour. He joined the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) in 1987 and was elected as a Branch Health and Safety Secretary the following year. Mr Gcilitshana was elected as a Regional Secretary for Health and Safety in Rustenburg in 1994 and elected as a Deputy National Secretary for Health and Safety during the same year. since In 2000, he was elected as a National Secretary for Health and Safety, a position he holds to date. He has been the chief negotiator at Lonmin Current Affiliations: Eric is a member of the Vaal Reefs Disaster Trust. 5 Rodney Ehrlich Prof. Rodney Ehrlich is Director of the Occupational Medicine Clinic at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town and has been involved in the management of occupational illness and disability and the training of specialists for 25 years. He trained at the University of Cape Town (UCT), University of the Witwatersrand, Mount Sinai Medical School, New York, and Columbia University, New York. He is specialised in both Public Health Medicine and Occupational Medicine, and holds joint appointments in the School of Public Health and Family Medicine and the Department of Medicine at the University of Cape Town. His research interests include occupational and environmental health: silicosis, tuberculosis and obstructive lung disease; social epidemiology; and workers compensation. In 2013 he spent time at Yale University as a Gruber Fellow in Global Health and Justice. He is currently Deputy Editor of the American Journal of Industrial Medicine. He has published a number of articles on workers compensation from the perspective of fairness and justice, and has been teaching the principles of research ethics to Masters Students at UCT for the past decade. 6 Cas Badenhorst Dr Cas Badenhorst is the Global Lead: Occupational Health and Hygiene at Anglo American plc. He is also appointed as Associated Professor in Occupational Hygiene in the School of Physiology at the North West University, Potchefstroom, South Africa and as Honorary Lecturer in the School of Public Health, University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. Cas is the current President of the Southern Africa Institute of Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH) Cas holds a number of tertiary qualifications in the area of physiology, occupational health and hygiene and mine environmental control. He is a registered Occupational Hygienist and has been working in the field of occupational health and hygiene for more than 20 years. He serves on a number of national and international advisory and technical committees and have also co-authored a number of international published articles. Specific areas of interest include health risk assessment, exposure to chloroplatinates, nickel and diesel engine emissions, engineering control practices and the application of technology in the area of occupational hygiene. 7 Charles Mbekeni Dr Charles Mbekeni, the Head of Health for Anglo American Platinum, is a medical doctor by background with post graduate training and experience in health policy and economics; epidemiology and statistics; social security, occupational health and health care management. He has worked as a policy analyst; a director of managed care; and served on policymaking bodies; clinical governance committees of private hospital groups & medical schemes; and board committees of private hospitals and social security bodies.
