1 MASTER OF MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME Innovation Management in a Global Business Perspective
2 Innovation Management in a Global Business Perspective A management programme of 30 ECTS credits OBJECTIVES: To give a better understanding of business strategies in highly competitive global markets To provide a better understanding of innovation processes and innovation in maritime organizations working internationally To offer analytical and managerial training in developing and implementing innovation projects To increase innovation and business opportunities across companies in the global maritime community Master of Management Programme Innovation Management in a Global Business Perspective This management development programme in Innovation Management is developed for the maritime cluster, targeting shipping, maritime industry and maritime services. The programme will be offered to a consortium of leading maritime companies operating internationally. BI Norwegian School of Management and Marintek will collaborate as providers of the programme. The maritime industry is the most global of all Norwegian industries. Its success is a result of commercial entrepreneurship and technological innovations transforming the maritime industry to a knowledge industry competing in a global market. Although the maritime industry is currently facing declining markets due to the global financial crisis, there are still many market opportunities for efficient and innovative companies. Throughout the world, shipping and maritime companies are consolidating and getting larger, and global leaders are emerging. Many of the big ocean transporters are expanding their service offers. The cargo owners are consolidating and growing to become major players in their segments. Customers are demanding more integrated services and customized solutions, in a context where shipping regulations are becoming more and more stringent. This will have a great impact on the maritime industry, and move the industry in a more knowledge-driven and service-oriented direction. Managing innovations at the corporate level has to do with transforming new ideas into profitable business opportunities. Most often innovations develop at the company s many interfaces with customers, suppliers and knowledge providers. They represent demanding efforts to re-allocate organizational and financial resources for a new business activity to grow. Thus managing innovation projects represents a crucial area for management development.
3 Programme focus The focus of the innovation programme is to increase business opportunities by taking innovative ideas into commercial business models. The value proposition of the programme is to transform innovative ideas of maritime companies into sustainable business models by forming innovation teams with participants from several maritime companies. The ideas are tested against state-of-the art management theories and best practice in three global settings, Europe, North America and Asia. The idea is to mobilize and utilize internal and external learning resources in the maritime cluster on a global basis, in working to transform the Norwegian maritime cluster into a global maritime knowledge hub. INNOVATION PROJECTS The programme will be composed by participants from leading maritime companies, ideally teams of 3 6 participants from each company. In order to be admitted to the programme each participating company has to provide one or two innovation project proposals. During the first module, the proposals will be discussed and further developed, and cross company project teams will be established to take the project ideas through the various stages into commercialization. Each team will work under the supervision of a corporate project sponsor and a dedicated academic advisor. Technical, commercial and organizational ideas can be chosen for project work. These innovation projects will serve as the practical case study throughout the programme. At the end of the programme the project teams should present a commercial project proposal with a sustainable business model for how to commercialize the innovative ideas, as well as a project paper to be evaluated for the Master of Management degree. The goal is to produce innovations that can be successfully implemented and sustainable for the participating companies at the end of the programme.
4 Programme content and structure This programme combines process learning, management theory and analysis of business and industry cases. The programme consists of four modules of four days each, offered over a one-year period: The first module in Trondheim at Marintek contains an introduction to strategy and innovation theory. A strong focus will be placed on analytical tools for business and technology driven projects. The second module in San Francisco at Berkeley & Stanford introduces participants to the Silicon Valley cluster and provides a Californian benchmark to innovation management. The third module in Singapore at Nanyang Technological University introduces the participants to the Singapore maritime cluster, and provides an Asian benchmark to innovation management. The fourth module in Oslo at BI Norwegian School of Management summarizes the learning. The participants will present the results of their project work for a group of top managers from the maritime sector, BI Norwegian School of Management and Marintek. The participants will work in innovation project teams on selected innovation projects provided by the participating companies during all four modules. These projects focus on developing and commercializing real innovations. The projects will be developed through group work under the guidance of an academic advisor from BI and/or Marintek. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE The programme is an international part-time programme at the master level and covers a total of 30 ECTS credits (A Master s Degree equals 90 ECTS credits). The programme consists of four modules of totally 18 days. The modules will be conducted in Trondheim, San Francisco, Singapore, and Oslo. The number of participants will be limited to 35 persons. The admission requirements are a Bachelor s Degree and/or relevant work experience. Throughout the programme the participants are expected to complete a project together with two other persons from the class. During the last module a written exam will be held. The programme is developed and organized by BI Norwegian School of Management together with Marintek.
