In the classroom, apprentices learn electrical theory, blueprint reading, mathematics, electrical code requirements, and safety and first aid practices. On the job, apprentices work under the supervision of experienced electricians. New technologies are expected to continue to spur demand for electricians. Robots and other automated manu facturing systems in factories will require the installation and maintenance of more complex wiring systems. In addition, efforts to boost conservation of energy in public buildings and in new construction will increase demand for electricians because electricians are key to installing some of the latest energy sav ers, such as solar panels and motion sensors for turning on lights. Building a uccessful Career Jessica Allen is training for her career in a field she discovered in high school. My high school academy course work in construction, gave me the knowledge, skills and confidence to enter a traditionally male-dominated career area. Working for a female owned construction company has opened my eyes to the never ending possibilities in the construction field. Jessica works as an Electrical Apprentice for D-Weeks Alexander and Associates, a licensed and certified home repair and improvement and electrical services company in Northern Virginia. Architects create the overall look of buildings and other structures, and the design of a building involves far more than its appearance. Buildings also must be functional, safe, and economical and must suit the needs of the people who use them. Architects must be able to communicate their ideas visually to their clients. Other important qualities for anyone interested in becoming an architect are creativity and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Construction Manager With construction jobs back on the rise, newly created jobs in the construction industry provide opportunities for candidates with a diverse range of qualifications and skill sets. echnical know-how is obviously crucial for this career field, but an absolute essential skill is working well with clients. Other core values that are important for construction workers to have: knowledge, a personable attitude, availability, and a balanced demeanor to react to demanding situations with level headedness. here is a diverse array of opportunities within the construction industry including work as a brick mason, plumber, electrician, crane operator, and construction manager, just to name a few. Construction Manager Construction managers plan, coordinate, budget, and supervise construction projects from early development to completion. Although many construction managers work from a main office, most work out of a field office at the construction site where they monitor the project and make daily decisions about construction activities. Employers increasingly prefer candidates with both work experience and a bachelor s degree in a construction-related field. Eric gives credit to FCP and CE with his success by saying, in order to realize your career goals and aspirations, you need opportunities and experience. he CE program offered by FCP affords you a head start in that direction. his early training has gone on to support the very successful careers of the Platenbergs. Jeff Platenberg serves as the Assistant uperintendent for the Department of Facilities and ransportation ervices with Fairfax County Public chools, while Eric Platenberg is the owner of his own company, Contractor s Plumbing, LLC. Both Eric and Jeff fondly remember their high school CE experiences. 6 CAREER CLUER: Architecture & Construction Plugged into a Career An electrical construction & engineering class at Edison Academy gave Ron Zacharias the skills to work for an electrical contracting company and Ron s teacher (who also owned an electrical business) was impressed enough to hire Ron himself. Without the guidance of my teacher and now my boss teve Palese, I would never be in such a growing field, says Ron. Ron also earned a business degree from Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC), which broadened his career prospects even further. he opportunities are endless with so many branches of the electrical trade in a few years I hope to own my own company and hopefully retire before I m 50! Electricians can be employed either independently or in staff positions by electrical HVAC building contractors, by factories, and by institutions such as hospitals and schools. his versatility gives persons in the electrical field broad employment. High school graduates may also enter the field through a registered apprenticeship program, conducted through the Department of Labor and Industry. In Virginia, electricians must be licensed; to become licensed, a person must demonstrate relevant work experience and pass an exam in electrical principles and building codes.
