What she did not know is the passion she would find in her career pursuits. My participation in the Animal cience program at the Edison Academy has had a major influence on my past, current and future career aspirations. he Animal cience Program eventually led me to Virginia ech where I received my bachelor s degree and made the life-changing decision to pursue higher education. In her postsecondary academic life, Michelle has moved from a goal of veterinarian to working as a PhD Candidate in the Department of Dairy ciences at Virginia ech. Agricultural and Food cientists Agricultural and food scientists work to ensure agricultural productivity and food safety. pecifically in the area of dairy science, research is in the basic and applied science and technology of animal nutrition, physiology, lactation, genetics, reproduction, and the business of dairy enterprise management. Her interest in food and nature began at a young age while cooking together with her aunt. As she grew older, Ashley realized the fresher the vegetables the better the food. Ashley was excited to take a culinary class in high school to gain an even better understanding of where food comes from and how to be creative with it. Ashley also gained even more opportunities through the student organization, killsua. Culinary gave me great experience with food and the chance to compete in killsua. It was a fantastic class that fueled my passion for the environment. Ashley is now continuing her studies at Bridgewater College majoring in Environmental cience. Environmental cientist Environmental scientists and specialists use their knowledge of the natural sciences to protect the environment and human health. ome of the typical areas the scientists research and analyze include collecting and compiling environmental data from samples of air, soil, water, food, and other materials for scientific analysis. hey also analyze samples, surveys, and other information to identify and assess threats to the environment. he work of the environmental scientists allows the federal, state and local governments to have regulations to ensure that there is clean air to breathe, safe water to drink, and no hazardous materials in the soil. Animal science class taught me important skills that I use every day at Pender Veterinary Centre. With these learned skills, I was a more knowledgeable and valuable employee. My early training allowed me to move up quickly in my field. I wouldn t be where I am today if I didn t take animal science. he animal science program is a two-year program that enables students to study animals and gain experience in the field of veterinary science. opics include animal anatomy, animal behavior, handling techniques, nutrition, disease pathology, sanitation, and disease control. Veterinary technologists often perform various medical tests and treat medical conditions and diseases in animals. Because veterinary technicians often deal with emotional pet owners, communication skills are very important.
