Change the Message. Change the Path. Change a Future. Innovative Strategies to Promote Career and Technical Education Pathways
The Familiar Message + The usual scenario A student tests A student isn t college-ready A student starts post-secondary education in developmental courses
The Familiar Message + What happened to the initial welcome? Once students test, things change. - Not qualified - Not prepared - Not eligible - Not college ready NOT NOT NOT NOT
The Familiar Message + The path we know too well - Students are placed into developmental courses, often labeled as success, foundational, or readiness courses - Maybe the students will advance - More likely these students will never earn a credential or a college-level credit
The Familiar Message + Too often for too many students Financial aid eligibility is depleted Developmental courses don t count for graduation Developmental courses don t connect to careers They drop out without a credential They can t earn enough money to live and pay their loans
It s Simply Not Working + The September 2013 study commissioned by the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) reported these statistics: Fewer than 25% of developmental education students complete a degree or certificate in 8 years. 42% of entering community college students were not sufficiently prepared for collegelevel courses and enrolled in at least one developmental education course. The National Center for Education Statistics reports that only 32% of all students who started as full-time, first-time students in 2-year institutions graduated with Associate s Degrees in approximately 3 years.
Why We Should All Care + Students matter Their lives, their futures, and their opportunities impact all of us. + Education matters Improving matriculation, retention, and completion rates contributes to healthier post-secondary institutions and communities at large. The eyes of the community and local, state, and federal agencies are watching what we do and how our students succeed. + Public opinion matters Career and Technical Education needs and deserves the support of federal, state, and local policy makers, thought leaders and influential foundations, and agencies such as the Gates Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education s Perkins Grants administrators.
Change the Message + Instead of telling students - They can t - They aren t - It isn t possible + Tell students - They can - They are - What is possible right now
Change the Path.
Change the Path + Encourage - Career pathways - Stackable credentials - Embedded degrees - Co-requisite instruction models + Integrate the advising message and path + Reframe placement as an entry point not a barrier + Focus the discussion on the places where students can start + Emphasize the immediate and make the pathway clear and attainable
Change the Path + Background Questions - Ask students about their plans and interests to align specific tests and programs + Branching Profiles - Designate sets of test for certain programs + Computer Skills Placement Tests (CSP) - Assess computer skills necessary for certain programs and careers + Local Tests - Measure skill sets necessary for success in certain programs or careers not measured with ACCUPLACER tests + Placement/Rules - Establish scores and skill levels needed for different programs
CTE and ACCUPLACER Background Questions + Ask students about their plans and interests to align specific tests and programs
CTE and ACCUPLACER Branching Profiles + Branching Profiles can be created specific to Students chosen program
CTE and ACCUPLACER Computer Skills Placement + CSP can be used to assess computer skills - almost every career field will require varying levels of computer skills
CTE and ACCUPLACER Local Tests + Local Tests can be authored by Faculty for specific programs
CTE and ACCUPLACER Placement Rules Establish scores and skill levels needed for different program specific courses.
