4 PHCC TEXAS PLUMBING APPRENTICE PROGRAM Who Can Attend: Employees of a PHCC (Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors Association of Texas) may be a high school intern. Program Description: The program is a four year plumbing apprentice certification program approved by the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Apprenticeship. Students attend class once a quarter for four ten hour days for four years. Classroom and lab work included. The program is a partnership between PHCC Texas, CEF and North Lake College. Where: Construction Education Foundation Training Facility (CEF) 1401 A Royal Lane, Irving, Tx Career Opportunities: Students graduate in 4 years and are well prepared for a successful career in plumbing. Most students have earned a Journeyman plumbing license upon graduation. They are then eligible to take the Master license exam in one year (rather than the required 5 years). The average federal wage rate for a plumbing apprentice with 8,000 hours is $21.00 an hour. These numbers increase substantially with each license earned. NCCER s Build Your Future (BYF) initiative is excited to announce it has teamed up with the Construction Education Foundation of North Texas (CEF) and North Lake College (NLC) to host the fourth annual Construction Career Day event on October 29, at CEF/NLC s West Campus, the DFW Education Center in Irving, Texas (Hwy 114/Freeport Pkwy). TEXO and ASA are sponsoring the event, and have committed to provide more than 100 construction industry volunteers. This event will highlight the national Careers in Construction Month that Build Your Future has established annually for the past 10 years. More than 800 select juniors and seniors are expected to attend, representing 35 North Texas high schools, to watch equipment and welding demonstrations, speak with local employers in the construction industry and visit booths representing various professions in construction. The collaborative efforts between Build Your Future, CEF of North Texas, North Lake College, TEXO and ASA are a perfect fit for an event of this magnitude. This career day is a model for other states to follow to highlight technical education and professional rewarding careers in construction. Events like this are instrumental in changing the image of the construction industry, boosting recruitment and ultimately narrowing the skills gap in America.
