Out of almost 19,000 full-time students at Algonquin College, approximately 1,900 are enrolled in skilled trades programs. Algonquin offers numerous full-time programs: Diploma and Advanced Diploma, Graduate Certificate and Certificate, and Apprenticeship as well as corporate training tailored to the needs of the residential construction industry. The compilation of initiatives included are undertaken at the following locations: Algonquin College Corporate Training Centre, Ottawa, Ontario Algonquin College Heritage Institute, Perth, Ontario Algonquin College Pembroke, Ontario Campus Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence, Ottawa, Ontario SKILLED LABOUR FORCE DEVELOPMENT Initiatives we have in place to help address skilled labour needs of the residential construction industry. Algonquin College Corporate Training works in partnership with the Greater Ottawa Homebuilders Association (GOHBA) to promote and offer a series of business professional workshops for Ottawa homebuilding industry. Algonquin College is a Champion Member of the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum and are involved in their research committees including the integration of technology in training and the incorporation of literacy and basic skills in on the job training Page 1 of 5

2 PROFESSIONALIZATION OF THE RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY Education and training opportunities for new home builders and renovators including those that help new home builders and renovators acquire specific designations. Algonquin offers a variety of professional development workshops, programs and continuing education courses and programs, both instructor led (in-class) and online, that provide flexible options for new home builders and renovators to undertake training and development. A number of these offerings are Gold Seal approved. AutoCAD (6-course Certificate) on campus. Construction Project Management - (12-course Graduate Certificate) available online (either FT or PT) o Courses above qualify for Gold Seal Certification points for the Canadian Construction Association s Gold Seal Certification Program and/or for the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (CIQS) Construction Management (6-course Certificate) available PT online or PT correspondence courses (print-based) Construction Management Commercial Estimating Customer Service (Achieving Better Customer Experiences and Building Better Customer Experiences A Blueprint for Leaders Plan reading, construction methods, budgeting, contracts and documents, job cost accounting, planning and scheduling, project administration and bid procedures Algonquin College offers CIQS approved courses; online courses in partnership with the Construction Sector Council in project management, construction law and communication, negotiation and conflict resolution Gas Technician 1 and 2 and 3 (Technical Standards Safety Authority certification) Home Inspection (delivered in collaboration with Carson Dunlop and Associates and in cooperation with the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors (OAHI) and incorporates the Standards of Practice of the ASHI / CAHPI. This program can lead to a Registered Home Inspectors designation) Building Environmental Systems Operator Class 1 and Class 2 Blueprint Reading Carpentry Interior Finishing and Trim Carpentry Layout and Foundations Carpentry Framing, Sheathing and Insulation (pre-apprenticeship) Construction Methods Construction Planning and Scheduling Construction Safety Drafting Project Monitoring Residential Estimating Residential Plan Reading and Construction Methods Page 2 of 5

3 Training on the above is offered on-site and at an Ottawa downtown Corporate Training Centre. Some of the most popular workshops include: Leadership and Supervision, Project Management, Building Better Customer Experiences, Negotiation Skills, Sales, Dealing with Difficult Situations and People, MS Office Suite COURSE DELIVERY AND DEVELOPMENT Steps Algonquin takes to address the specific skill needs of the residential construction industry. The Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence (ACCE) 1 continues to experience an increase in applications, confirmations and enrolments in all its construction related trade programming for September Algonquin continues its ongoing industry representation on program advisory committees to provide our programs direction and keep them current with evolving skill needs. Algonquin College is now working with the Construction Safety Association of Ontario to incorporate the latest information and content into the course content we have across all programs. 5 RESEARCH AND REPORTS Algonquin participated in the Canadian Apprenticeship Forum s research into the integration of technology in apprenticeship training both on the job and in-school. We are also assisting CAF with their research into how employers address issues around literacy and basic skills training in the workplace. Algonquin is active in the area of applied research and is always looking for projects and partners. Our students and teachers can help the industry with testing new procedures, systems, materiel or technics before it is used in the field.
