Before I enrolled in the fashion design academy program, all I knew was that I wanted to be a fashion designer, but I had no idea how to go about realizing that dream. he fashion design program gave me a head start in understanding the design process from the developmental stages to production, giving me resources I still use today in maintaining my own clothing line. I learned to understand myself as a designer, be proactive in my career, and handle the demanding deadlines of the fashion industry. Now Doina is doing what she always dreamed of by designing clothes for her own brand and putting her mark on the fashion industry. Fashion Designer Fashion designers help create the billions of dresses, suits, shoes, and other clothing and accessories purchased every year by consumers. I went to college with the fundamental knowledge of garment construction as well as a basic artistic background. Looking back, it is such a privilege to have Fairfax County Public chools offer such a specialized and intensive course for young students. Alison Beshai is doing what she loves helping clients find and expand their fashion style. Alison was introduced to fashion and retail by a unique program offered through Fairfax County Public chool s (FCP) and the Fair Oaks Mall. his program allows students to use the mall as a learning laboratory while studying the elements of fashion marketing. he classroom-on-the-mall fashion marketing class was my first exposure and education in fashion and retail. his exposure lead me to pursue further education and eventually a career in the field. Alison is now enhancing her customers lives and style as a fashion stylist and personal shopper. Alison owns her own company and works as a freelance fashion and wardrobe stylist providing services that include editorial, print and runway styling, film wardrobe direction and styling, creative direction, and personal shopping/consulting. Fashion tylist tylists may provide services such as personal shopping, restructuring a client s entire wardrobe, reorganizing a client s closet, or other duties relating to the client s personal lifestyle. Good fashion stylists know how to accentuate the positive attributes of the people they dress. Choosing the right outfit to flatter someone in a way that is appropriate for a particular lifestyle is an art. Fashion styling requires extensive knowledge of the fashion industry and a knack for matching your clients with the clothing that will support the image they want to project. his career requires excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as the ability to be organized, manage time effectively, and plan and control budgets. By learning these fundamentals, I feel like I have had a major advantage in my college classes. I understand right away what my professors are talking about at FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) because I was exposed to the fields in high school. Amanda is enjoying an exciting career working in the field of social media for Local Wolves Magazine. Fashion At its most basic, fashion marketing is the strategic art of pushing product. Market research launches a marketing strategy, answering those must-know questions such as target market and customer needs and wants, and a Fashion Marketer then uses that information to develop a marketing program with coordinated elements such as advertising, special events, public and media relations, videos and social media, as well as written articles and materials. Increasing sales is the ultimate goal. During his freshman year, Brian came up with the idea of improving the traditional cleat used on athletic shoes. He patented the idea and, through his class in Entrepreneurship, decided to take his idea for the cleat further as a project for the class. In his marketing class, Brian developed his idea into a business proposal that he presented to two executives and the director of business development for Under Armour. Brian is now studying Finance at James Madison University and ultimately wants to run his own business and will use the information he obtained in marketing and entrepreneurship classes to reach that goal. Mustafa Gardizi knew he was up for the challenge after taking sports and entertainment marketing classes in high school. My marketing courses gave me the knowledge and confidence to pursue jobs with professional sports teams in the DC area. As I began to become more involved with my multiple jobs, I found myself using the methods I learned from the classroom in real life situations. hat s when I knew that that the marketing courses I took in high school were the foundation to beginning my lifelong career. ports and Entertainment A career in sports and entertainment marketing requires an excellent work ethic, strong desire to succeed, professionalism, and a passion for the sports industry. Candidates must also possess the ability to multi-task while working in a fastpaced, team-oriented environment. Responsibilities include assisting with the coordination of game day needs in planning, organizing, and executing an array of elements necessary for the in-game entertainment of all home games and creating, designing, and implementing new ideas for promotions on game nights. Brendan and Kevin co-founded, First Funder, an organization centered on partner-based crowdfunding for emerging entrepreneurs. While in high school, both young men participated in the student organization, DECA, which uses real world scenarios for district, state and international competitions. Kevin shared, Career and echnical Education (CE) classes helped me discover my passion for business and entrepreneurship. Brendan also added, establishing relationships with the teachers in CE were invaluable to my personal and professional development. I would not be where I am today without CE. Entrepreneur An entrepreneur is an individual who organizes and operates a business or businesses, taking on financial risk to do so. he entrepreneur is commonly seen as a business leader, innovator of new ideas, and business processes. Management skill and strong team building abilities are often perceived as essential leadership attributes for successful entrepreneurs. Although there are risks with opening your own business, the rewards of following your passion and being your own boss are like no other. 9 :, ales & ervice A Custom-Made Career Classes in fashion marketing at Oakton High chool proved to be the start of great things for u-anh Nguyen. u-anh now has her own fashion label, an elegant web site, and is the designer of an entire collection of handcrafted shoes and accessories. What s more, the products from her company, u-anh Accessories, are sold both online and in distinctive retailers nationwide. u-anh credits one of her teachers at Oakton High for playing a particular role in her achievements. he person in high school who really motivated me to succeed and to gain the experience I needed was my marketing instructor. He was always looking outside the box for opportunities that would come about for students in the industries they were pursuing. As she has pursued the fashion industry, u-anh has designed a career for herself that is a perfect match to her own talent and motivation. When they start their own business, entrepreneurs must recognize unmet needs in the marketplace, and must have enough training in business principles to go out and meet those needs successfully. High school programs can play an important part in that training. For Buki Peters, that exposure led the way to further studies in the field of fashion. he hands-on experience I gained in the fashion design program at Fairfax Academy helped ease me into the real world of college courses. Although we could only touch on each element of fashion design for a few weeks, the fact that I had been introduced to a variety of design skills before college was very helpful to me at the start of my freshman year.
