1 Dear Riverside Families, You spoke, we listened! Based on feedback from families and friends in the community on our annual Tread-a-Thon event, Riverside School is excited to try something new this year! We invite you to join with us in the VCU Broad Street Mile on September 20, With more options for participation and an outdoor festival environment, the VCU Broad Street Mile provides a fun and easy way for Riverside families to help raise money for our school and increase awareness in the community. The VCU Broad Street Mile event takes place along Broad Street between Belvidere and Meadow, and will feature a series of one-mile fun runs and a festival with entertainment, vendors, food trucks, and more. Riverside students should select the Kids Mile option when registering. This fun run will start at 12:20 p.m. and feature the opportunity to run with area mascots. Any parents interested in running the 5K option at 10:00 a.m. may do so by registering under the Riverside School Parents team. According to VCU policy, one parent or guardian will still need to walk/run with their child during the Kids Mile. Registration fees for the one-mile run are $5 for students and $10 for adults (kids 5 and under are free). These fees will go up a month prior to the event. We encourage everyone to register their teams in August, and continue fundraising throughout September to support their team goals. If registering for the 5K, the cost is $15. All registration information is available online at. Start your team online, get your friends and family to join you, and promote fundraising to support our school! All funds raised from the VCU Broad Street Mile will directly benefit your students by supporting our technology fund, enabling Riverside to purchase ipads, upgrade laptops, and sustain our school s SmartBoards and interactive learning resources. VCU is providing incentives for local nonprofits, including a $2,000 cash prize to the organization that raises the most money and another $2,000 to the organization that recruits the most runners. Additionally, Riverside will provide all-school incentives if we can reach our participation goals, such as a Game Truck Party here at the school. So let s get energized and show Richmond our Panther Pride! Our goal is for Riverside School to have 200 walkers or sponsors participate. Money raised from the VCU Broad Street Mile will fund technology improvements at our school to benefit all of our students. To reach this goal, we are asking that each student set a goal to: 1. Recruit 5 people to walk with them on their team 2. Obtain sponsorships from 10 people 3. Get energize with school spirit for this fun event! Step-by-step registration details are available in this packet. All team registrations and donations must be done online through VCU at /register. If you have questions about online registration, please feel free to contact our Development Office at (804) or development@riversideschool.org. You can also contact VCU directly at info@broadstreetmile.com. Thank you, Julie Wingfield Head of School

3 Always use a clear and strong voice when asking someone to sponsor you. tips for fundraising success Practice with family members and friends until you feel comfortable with what you are going to say. Be clear about where the money will go and how it will help your school. Be sure to thank people for their time whether or not they are able to join your team or sponsor you. What Do I Say? This is just a sample script you can use to practice. Think of ways to tell your unique Riverside story when fundraising! Hi, my name is and I attend Riverside School. Riverside is a small nonprofit school for children with dyslexia or language-based learning differences like me! Dyslexia is a learning difference that makes learning to read, write, and spell difficult. People with dyslexia learn in a special way, and my school has 40 years of experience teaching kids in this special way. Did you know 1 in 5 people have some kind of learning difference? My school is part of VCU Broad Street Mile to increase awareness and raise money to support our programs. Would you like to join my team or sponsor me? The event is on Saturday, September 20 at 12:20 p.m. downtown on Broad Street. Registration is $10 for adult and $5 for students. If Yes - I ll Join Your Team! Great! I will sign you up for my team or you can register online. I am hoping that my team together can raise $. I will collect your sponsorship money or you can visit my team page at. Thank you for being part of my team! (Give them a card with your team name and website) If No Would you like to sponsor me as I walk? Any sponsorship amount is great and will go a long way to helping us increase awareness about dyslexia and support programs at our school. If No Thank you for your time. Please let me know if you ever want to learn more about dyslexia or my school. Who Do I Ask? Start with a list of possible team members or sponsors. This list can include family members, friends, and neighbors. Try to make a list of at least 25 people to ask to sponsor you. Here are some ideas: Mom & Dad Grandparents Uncles & Aunts Brothers & Sisters Cousins Godparents Next Door Neighbors People at Your Place of Worship Clergy People in Your Neighborhood Your Piano Teacher Your Coach Mom & Dad s Coworkers Teammates & Their Parents Tips for Parents Does your company offer gift matching programs? Ask your supervisor or HR department for a gift matching form. Examples of companies that have recently matched gifts to Riverside include: Altria Group Capital One Bank of America SunTrust Microsoft MeadWestvaco
4 student prizes All-School Bonus Prize Win a Free FUN Day for the Entire School!! If we get 200 walkers or sponsors, we will book a Game Truck Party event at Riverside! The Game Truck Party offers the ultimate video game party brought right to our front door. We need everyone to participate to help make this possible. If each student recruits 5 team members and asks 10 people for sponsorships, we can make this happen!! Class Prizes 1st Place Class: The class that raises the most money through walk sponsors will receive a pizza party and movie day. 2nd Place Class: The class with the second highest fundraising total will receive an ice cream party.
