1 Wayne Community College Student Government Association Minutes January 27, 2014 I. Call to Order 12:00 PM II. Approval of the Agenda III. Roll Call Associate Degree Student Nursing Association Class of 2014 Associate Degree Student Nursing Association Class of 2015 Budo Club Cliff Hangers CRU (Campus Crusade for Christ) Criminal Justice Club Dental Assisting Human Services Club International Students Club 3MG Phi Beta Lambda Phi Theta Kappa Practical Nursing Club Pharmacy Technology Wayne County Historians WCCANS WCC Ambassadors Clubs were reminded that each club is allowed a maximum of 2 voting representatives. These representatives have full voting privileges during SGA meetings as stated in the constitution and bylaws. IV. Approval of the Minutes- The minutes from the December 12, 2013 meeting were read and approved without any corrections. V. Officer Reports A. President Courtney Watts stated that she hoped everyone enjoyed their winter break and that the semester is going to be filed with renovations in the WLC building. She informed students that the lounge would be temporarily closed and that students would have access to the seating area inside the cafeteria for extended hours. Courtney announced that some staff member s offices would be relocated temporarily

2 during the renovations and asked students to please be patients while they are taking place. She asked students to stop by the Student Activities office for more information on the relocation of staff offices. Courtney concluded by announcing that she would be attending the Board of Trustees meeting and annual retreat on February 7, If students had any concerns or issues to be discussed to please her so that she could attempt to address them at the meeting. B. Vice President Andre Selby welcomed back all of the returning students and new students. He stated that during the month of December the Gifts for Grands project facilitated by the SGA was successful. They received two full boxes of gifts and essential toiletries for elderly men and women. The goods were delivered to the Peggy Seegars Senior Center. Andre commended the students on their participation in community events and thanked them for their hard work. He completed his report by encouraging the students to continue participating in community outreach programs throughout the semester. C. Secretary Nicole Williams welcomed everyone back from their winter break and encouraged everyone to prepare for another busy semester. She stated that on January 31, 2014 Wayne Community College will be hosting the 4 th Annual Praxis Film Festival at Paramount Theater. Nicole informed everyone that on February 1, 2014 the event would move to Wayne Community College and offered contact information to purchase tickets for the event. She reported that a blood drive hosted by the American Red Cross would be held on February 4, 2014 from 9:00 AM to 1:30 PM. Students could go online and register for an appointment and also sign up in the student activities office. Donors who signed up between January 1, 2014 and March 31, 2014 would be entered into a drawing for at $1,500 gift card. Nicole concluded by encouraging students to participate in campus activities. D. Special Populations Officer Lisa Mozingo stated that she hoped everyone s semester was starting off well. She announced that Wayne Community College held a Resume Checkup on January 23-24, 2014 for students who needed assistance with developing their resumes in order to apply for jobs after graduation. Lisa reported that on January 28, 2014 Wayne Community College would be holding sessions for students who would like to create a resume but were unsure of how to start. The sessions would be held at 10:00 AM in Walnut 101 and at 2:00 PM in Walnut 104. For any questions students were asked to contact Jessica Harrell. She also announced a free NC Youth Leadership Forum that would be held at North Carolina State University from July for youth with disabilities between the ages of 15 and 28 that aspire to be leaders in their community. Lisa concluded by asking anyone who was interested in the event to please contact herself or Paige Ham in the Student Activities office. E. Public Information Officer Nathan Trent thanked everyone who attended the meeting and welcomed back all of the students. He stated that he felt that semester would be a great one and hoped that it created new beginnings and goals for everyone. Nathan announced the success of the Martin Luther King Jr. events around campus, including a free showing of Lee Daniels The Butler, hosted by the Cultural

3 Diversity Global Education Task Force on January 16, He announced that the SGA had continued the Lawn Love project on January 17, 2014 by taking down the Christmas lights they had previously put up for Ms. Greene. Nathan completed his report by stating that the continuation of the project has been a heart-warming experience and a great success. VI. Unfinished Business- No Unfinished Business VII. New Business- No New Business VIII. Club Reports A. Phi Theta Kappa announced that members and advisors are finishing up the Hallmark entries for 2013 and hoped to earn awards at their regional conference. They stated that in 2014 there would be a regional conference in South Carolina that members and advisors would be attending. Phi Theta Kappa announced that they would be working at the soup kitchen on February 22, Upcoming events would be announced later. B. Cliff Hangers stated that they worked with Phi Theta Kappa in the Christmas Flotilla at the The Cliffs of the Neuse. The Cliff Hangers would be having a meeting with the park rangers at the Cliffs of the Neuse to carry out upcoming events. C. WCC Ambassadors announced their participation in the Flotilla at the Cliffs of the Neuse and the Goldsboro Christmas Parade along with the SGA officers. The Ambassadors stated they adopted a child off of the local Angel Tree and donated gifts to the child for Christmas. The Ambassadors concluded by stating they would be assisting with the 4 th Annual Praxis Film Festival during January. D. Criminal Justice Club announced that they would be working at the soup kitchen during the month of January. They participated in the Goldsboro Christmas Parade on December 7, The Criminal Justice Club announced that they hosted a food drive for their community service project. In February, the Criminal Justice Club will host a raffle for a Valentine s Day basket and that they would be selling tickets for a dollar. Kirk Keller asked the Criminal Justice Club to take into consideration the recent passing of Sheriff Winders and to donate a wreath, or some other memorabilia to show their respects. E. 3MG stated that from January 2, 2014 to January 10, 2014 they raised money for bag checking and reading. During January the club hosted multiple speakers such as Mrs. Cantwell and Dr. McCullen. F. Human Services Club announced that they raised over $200 for the Operation Santa Claus Project and the club would be hosting a winter coat drive through the end of January. Coats could be dropped off to Ms. Susan Lambert. The coats will be donated to the community soup kitchen.

4 G. Dental Assisting Student Association helped the Budo club with their food drive and raised $ to donate to the Philippines. The Dental Assisting Student Association announced that they would be participating in the Praxis Film Festival and hosting several bake sales throughout the semester. They concluded by stating that would be selling tooth brushes and whitening strips. H. Practical Nursing Club announced that they will be hosting a raffle fundraiser. Tickets are $1.00 per ticket or 6 tickets for $5.00. They are giving away various prizes. I. The Historians, represented by Kirk Keller, announced that they were officially associated with the Wayne County Historical Association and that the President of The Historians was a board member of the Historical Association. Mr. Keller encouraged students to join the club and have their voices heard during the Historical Association meetings. The club would be making trips to the City Council and to the Wayne County Commissioner s meetings to discuss the county s history. The Historians encouraged teachers, students, and faculty to join. Mr. Keller stated that as an SGA advisor he would like to encourage clubs to bring representatives into the clubs. Mr. Keller said that the community service projects that clubs participated in look good on resume s and implored students to not only participate in off campus service projects but also in projects on campus. Mr. Keller concluded by asking students to attend foundation sponsored events and the lectures held once a month. The next lecture would be held the following Tuesday February 4, 2014 at 7:30 PM. IX. Issues to be Discussed in Open Forum One student came forward and asked that administration provide another microwave for students. SGA President, Courtney Watts, elaborated on the matter and informed administration that students were having to wait excessive amounts of time because of the lack of microwaves. X. Remarks from Administration A. Donald Magoon announced that he would work on the microwave issue. He stated that on the previous weekend Wayne Community College had to adjust the weather alert system that is used to contact students. He asked students to log in and update their contact information so that the school would be able to notify them in case of inclement weather. Mr. Magoon also announced that renovations were approved Thursday prior to the meeting and they would start the following week. He reported that he would be providing a web page to keep everyone informed of the renovations that would be taking place. Before and after images would be provided to students so they would know where to find everything after renovations were completed. Mr. Magoon announced the grand opening of the walking trail and asked everyone to take advantage of the trail. He informed students that the CRC Testing area was moved to Walnut 136 and that the College Transfer Advising Center had been moved to WLC 229. Mr. Magoon commended

5 the new planter in the atrium and announced that the school was still painting and replacing carpet throughout the building. He stated that in the dental area they were replacing sinks and adding new cabinets for the program. Mr. Magoon said his intentions of having mobile device charging stations added on campus and bus shelters would be coming in the spring. Mr. Magoon asked students to please encourage each other to not use the handicap buttons to open doors to save on energy. He asked students to visit the student handbook for guidelines about posting on Facebook and to use due process for complaints and grievances. He concluded by introducing the new Associate Vice President of Academic and Student Services, Ms. Joanna Morrisette. B. Joanna Morrisette announced that she accepted her new position two weeks prior to the meeting and she had taken the place of Mr. Gene Smith. She stated that Student Services was on the first floor of the WLC building until renovations officially started. Ms. Morrisette asked students to take the renovations into consideration when planning activities and any events planned inside the building would possibly need to be relocated in case the atrium or other areas of the building were deemed unavailable. She concluded by announcing that Nathan Trent, the Public Information Officer, would represent Wayne Community College in the North Carolina Academic Excellence Award. XI. Announcements A. Campus Crusade for Christ announced that they would be promoting students to different positions among their club and would be announcing meeting dates soon. They announced the possibility of a funeral fundraiser for the Rosewood teens. B. Virgil Shaw announced that a previous Special Populations Officer from the SGA, Majesty York, would be on American Idol and asked students to show their support. C. Financial Aid asked students to spread the word that the Financial Aid office was accepting applications for the Work Study program and for the child care assistance program. XII.
