3 Reason for Being Preamble We, the students of nursing, believe there is a common need to organize, to represent ourselves to the consumer and other health disciplines, and to assume our rightful place in the profession of nursing. We believe in the developing of the whole person toward his/her professional role with its rights, responsibilities, and ideals. We believe the quality and quantity of participation are not exclusive but bear the responsibilities of participation. Rights and Responsibilities Students have a right to a sound education. Students have a right and responsibility to: Have a creative education opportunity; Have the highest quality practitioner-teacher; Achieve input into curriculum planning; Achieve self-directed learning; Achieve equal participation in all areas of clinical practice, and Participate in interdisciplinary activities Students have a right to due process. Students have a right and responsibility for insuring peer review and self-evaluation. Students have all rights and privileges of internal governance. Students have a right and responsibility to organize, and participate in an organization directed toward achieving professional goals. Students have a right and responsibility for: Facilitating change in health care delivery through various channels; Assembling and exploring fundamental and current professional issues and concerns; Organizing in a flexible structure to encompass and represent the diversities within nursing and to be representative of the fundamental and current professional issues and concerns; Fostering a better correlation between nursing education and practice. 3

4 Article I - Name The name of this organization shall be STUDENT NURSES ASSOCIATION AT INDIANA UNIVERSITY KOKOMO (IUKSNA), a constituent of the Indiana Association of Nursing Students, Inc., SNA. Article II - Purpose and Functions The purpose of the SNA shall be: a. To assume responsibility for contributing to nursing education in order to provide for the highest quality health care. b. To provide programs representative of fundamental and current professional interests and concerns. c. To aid in the development of the whole person, and his/her responsibility for the health care of people in all walks of life. d. To provide students an opportunity to experience involvement in a professional organization. e. To provide guidance through mentoring from members. The function of the IUKSNA shall include the following: a. To have direct input into standards of nursing education and influence the education process. b. To influence health care, nursing education and practice through legislative activities as appropriate. c. To promote and encourage participation in community affairs and activities towards improved health care and the resolution of related social issues. d. To represent nursing students to the consumer, to institutions, and other organizations. e. To promote and encourage students' participation in interdisciplinary activities. f. To promote and encourage, participation in student activities, and educational opportunities regardless of sex, race, color, handicap, national origin, age, or economic status. Article III - Members Section I - Membership Members of the organizations shall be: 1. IUKSNA shall be composed of Indiana University Kokomo undergraduate nursing students. 2. Active Members: a. Students enrolled in state approved programs leading to licensure as a registered nurse. b. Registered nurses enrolled in undergraduate programs leading to baccalaureate degree with a major in nursing. c. Active members shall have all the privileges of membership. 4

5 Section 2 - Dues 3. Associate Members: a. Pre-nursing students enrolled in college or university programs designed as preparation for entrance into an undergraduate program leading to a baccalaureate degree in nursing. b. Associate members shall have all of the privileges of membership except the right to hold office as president and vice president, secretary, or treasurer. However, pre-nursing student will be eligible to serve on committees. 1. As of our present status of a new school organization, there will no dues required at this time. Article IV - Local Organization and its Affiliations 1. IUKSNA shall be the sole nursing student organization of Indiana University Kokomo Campus. Article V - Officers Section 1 - Offices of the Organization 1. The officers of IUKSNA shall be the president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and committee director. Section 2 - Eligibility a. Only members who shall be nursing students throughout the academic school year and have the privileges of active membership shall be eligible to serve as an officer. Section 3 - Elections a. As of now, the present Student Nurse Leaders will be the Board of Directors throughout the spring of Upon elections in late spring 2011, the Board of Directors will transition responsibilities to the newly elected officers and all committee chairs. b. The officers shall be elected at the last business meeting during the Spring Semester. The president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and committee director will be elected each year. c. Prior to the election meeting all nominees are required to submit a Consent to Serve document to the Nomination Committee. d. All voting shall be done by ballot (members only). No election will be valid unless a quorum of members vote by presence or absentee ballot. e. A simple majority vote shall constitute an election. In the event of a tie, a re-vote of the tied nominees shall be held. f. The nomination committee including the chair will count ballots. Section 4 - Duties of Officers A. The President shall: 1. Preside at all meetings of the association and the Board of Directors. 2. Serve as ex-officio member of all committees. 3. Represent IUKSNA in matters relating to the association and perform all other duties pertaining to the office. 5

6 B. The Vice President shall: 1. Assume the duties of the president in his/her absence. 2. In the event of a vacancy occurring in the office of president, the vice president shall become president. 3. The president and vice president shall be responsible for the itinerary of meetings of the association. 4. Notify members of activities. 5. Perform all other duties as assigned by the president. C. The Secretary shall: 1. Record the minutes of all business and board meetings of the association, post to electronic to each board member, School of Nursing Faculty, and all members. Minutes also posted on nursing board, 2 nd floor of the East Building. 2. Inform IUKSNA of all current programs and activities. 3. Maintain a register of all members for roll call and business purposes. 4. Conduct general correspondence of association. 5. Will be responsible for all electronic ing. 6. Perform all other duties as assigned by the president. D. The Treasurer shall: 1. Submit request for funds. 2. Prepare an annual report at the end of the fiscal year to be presented at a business meeting at that time. 3. Perform all other duties as assigned by the president. E. The Committee Director shall: 1. Create and post publicity for SNA meetings and events. 2. Serve as the IUKSNA liaison to outside organizations. 3. Investigate possible community service projects in which SNA may choose to take part. 4. Appoint special committees with the approval of the Board of Directors. 5. Serve as the liaison between committee chairman and other board members. 6. Perform all other duties assigned by the President Section 5 Duties of Committee Chairs A. Nomination Committee shall: 1. Be responsible for collecting nominations from members. 6

7 2. Present a list of nominees to the Board of Directors. B. Mentor Committee shall: 1. Unite mentor-mentee relationships among members. C. Community Services Committee shall: 1. Create and post publicity for SNA meetings and events. 2. Serve as the IUKSNA liaison to outside organizations. 3. Investigate possible community service projects in which SNA may choose to take part. 4. Appoint special committees with the approval of the Board of Directors. 5. Perform all other duties assigned by the President D. Social Committee shall: 1. Make available 2 social events per year. Article VI Faculty Advisors Section 1 - Appointment a. There shall be one faculty advisors. Section 2 - Duties of the Advisors a. Act as advisor to the association. b. Be a part of the board of directors as ex-officio members (no voting power). c. Provide for flow of information and communication between SNA, Nursing Faculty, and Indiana University Kokomo Administration. Article VII - Meetings - Business and Board Section 1 - Meeting dates a. Monthly board meetings shall be conducted during the school year at times approved by the Board of Directors. b. One board and IUKSNA member meeting per month shall be conducted during the school calendar year and can be conducted in conjunction with another SNA event. c. Special meetings may be called by the president upon consultation with the Board of Directors or by written request of a quorum of members. d. One or more board meetings during summer months may be conducted for organizational purposes with the newly elected board members to plan for upcoming school year. Section 2 - Quorum a. A quorum for the board meetings shall consist of the president and/or vice-president, secretary and two other board member. 7

8 b. A quorum shall consist of two officers, one of which shall be the president or vice president, and 1/3 of the members of the association. Article VIII - Board of Directors Section 1 - Board of Directors a. All the officers of the association and Committee Chairpersons. b. The faculty advisor are ex-officio members. Section 2 - Responsibilities of the Board of Directors a. Appointment of offices of unfilled terms. b. Preparation for agenda of all meetings. c. Coordination of activities of the association. Article IX - Standing Committees Section 1 - Persons serving on committees shall: a. Be active members of the association. b. Perform such duties as are assigned by the Board of Directors. c. Report to SNA members when requested to do so. d. Submit a written report of the committee activities to the Committee Director one (1) week prior to the next meeting. Section 2 - Committees shall be composed of a minimum of two active association members. Article X - Amendments Section 1 - These bylaws may be amended at any monthly officer meeting of IUKSNA, provided that a two-thirds quorum is present and provided that notice of the proposed amendments has been sent to the members at least one week prior to the meetings call of order. Section 2 - Proper amendments shall be submitted in writing, carrying the proponent's signature, to the president or vice president for review. Proposed amendments may be submitted only by the members of the IUKSNA. Section 3 Amendments to the IUKSNA bylaws adopted at a monthly meeting will be effective immediately, unless an effective date is specified. Article XI Impeachment 8

9 Section 1 Any officer or director shall be impeached upon dereliction of duty or any activity unbecoming the constitution or bylaws of IUKSNA. The individual in conflict must be notified within 5 days of hearing. After the hearing, a two-third s vote of the members at that meeting will ratify the impeachment. Section 2 Dereliction of duty will include: 1. Two unexcused absences during the elected term of office unless approved by the President. Notification must be before the meeting unless an emergency situation arises. Section 3 Right to Appeal 1. The impeached member will have the right to appeal within ten (10) school days by written memo to the officers. 2. The emergency session will require two-thirds voice of the members attending to enforce impeachment. Updated 09/22/2011 9
