Thank you all for participating in conferences last week! We had 96% of our families participate! Your input on the district surveys will help inform the district and school board regarding how to best engage families. Speaking of engaging families, we re moving forward with social media and creating our own Facebook page. It is a contemporary way for us to share great news and resources with everyone in a timely manner. We ll post the newsletters as well. We ll let you know when we get up and running! Last week I shared that a parent survey would come out this week. I will have Mrs. Lee the link to all families this afternoon. For those families without computers, I will also have hard copies in the office. Please take a few moments to complete a five question Parent Survey around recognizing and celebrating student success at school, as well as information you may want regarding Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) strategies at school. This is our first year of implementation and we re striving to share more information with parents. PBIS is a framework which teaches students common expectations, recognizes appropriate choices and results in students achieving at higher levels of school success. Additionally, schools customize the learning environment and school community based on student, staff and parent voice. Your input helps us plan for some important next steps in creating school wide pride, spirit and empowering our students to grow and develop into their very best selves! We will continue to discuss opportunities for students to know we believe in them, and their hopes and dreams. 2 Counselor s Corner For many of our Gordon/Options families the holidays can be less than joyful as families struggle with such concerns as loss of job, financial constraints, medical assistance, basic food, shelter, clothing and mounting bills. Some of the key local resources available include: Dial (employment support, medical care questions, mental health services, senior assistance, shelter needs, utility bill help, domestic violence help and food resources). Kitsap Community Resources (housing, energy assistance, weatherization, Christmas Angel -gifts for children from low-income families, parenting, and employment & training. Call for more information. Apple Health for Kids & Teens covers a full range of services. If your child is eligible you can access doctor and nurse visits, dental care, check-ups/immunizations, physical and speech therapy, transportation for office visits, hospital emergency care, prescriptions, eyeglasses and hearing aids, counseling and more. Phone: Sharenet provides the greater Kingston area with emergency food provisions, screened emergency power and rental assistance for client s faced with shut-off notices or eviction as well as a weekend take home food program delivered to students at school. The thrift store carries quality gently used clothing at bargain prices. Sharenet is located at United Rd, Kingston. I want to reiterate the importance of your student wearing comfortable clothes and tennis shoes on your P.E. days. Listed below is the current P.E. schedule. Our school district is no exception. There are some simple steps that you can take at home to drastically reduce the number of cases seen in our district each year. Control of head lice depends on prompt identification and treatment. Your help in spending 5-15 minutes inspecting your child weekly throughout the school year for the presence of head lice would make a huge difference. The following procedure is recommended for inspecting your child for head lice: Under a bright light begin looking at your child s head starting with the area just above the back of the neck. Part the hair into small sections and look closely for head lice or nits (eggs). Head lice are about the size of a sesame seed. Nits are tiny, gray or whitish and attached firmly to the hair shaft near the scalp. If you find live lice on your child s head, start treatment as soon as possible. Your local pharmacist or family physician can recommend appropriate treatment options. Additionally, there is a business serving Kitsap County called Lice Girls. They specialize in non-toxic lice treatment services and also sell lice treatment products for use at home. Their website is: Please notify the office staff at your child s school. Your child can return to school the day after treatment, but please stop by the office with your child for a head check before returning to the classroom. We respect the privacy of all families and can ONLY contact those families of students we, at school, have found to have nits or live lice. Letters to families stating that a student in their child s grade has been found to have lice ARE NO LONGER SENT HOME. Inspect the entire family for head lice and treat those affected. North Kitsap School District has adopted a no live lice protocol. Our management protocol is based on the Harvard School of Public Health which provides an evidence based management plan for public schools.
