As a source, or outcome, of such contextual changes, war raises the costs and uncertainty of doing business abroad. I develop theory pertaining to whether, which, when (early or late), and how (in part or as a whole) MNE subsidiaries exit from warring countries. MNE subsidiaries have differential exposure and vulnerability to the threat from war depending on their distance from the violence, the value of their assets that are at risk, and the extent of their coping mechanisms and adaptive capacity. The tipping point in an MNE subsidiary s exit vs. stay decision will be influenced by both immediate evaluations of the threat posed by war to its operations, its prior commitments in the host country, and expectations of long-term profits (or indeed losses) therein. Building on the resource based view and real options theory, I examine the extent to which irreplaceable and immobile resources become constraints in the exit strategy. In war, the advantages of being an MNE may become disadvantages. 5 Curriculum Vitae
