Waguespack Abstract: In my dissertation I explore endogenous social and institutional processes through which new technology emerges and follows differential developmental trajectories. Building upon the institutional logic and social movement perspectives, I argue that an institutional logic is a product of actors collective social processes and that established logics play a central role in shaping the subsequent development of new technology. To test my arguments, I examine contestation in logics (industrialism vs. environmentalism) and the differential evolution of electric and hybrid drive in the electric automotive technology community from and explicate how hybrid drive emerges as the dominant alternative technology. Starting from the perspective of economic sociology, this study opens up the black box of technological evolution and addresses how embedded agents collectively shape, and are at the same time shaped by, institutions, which in turn helps us better understand the complexity of technology development.
