2 OBJECTIVE: The objective of the conference is to provide physicians and other health care providers with a broad range of practical information to help diagnose child abuse and neglect. The topics of the conference include: Evidence Based Medicine (EBM), Chronic Subdural Hematomas, Failure to Thrive, Mimics of abuse, Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), physical abuse, pornography and court testimony. LEARNING OUTCOME: Participants will leave the conference with enhanced knowledge of the diagnostic and management skills needed when faced with a child suspected of being abused or neglected. TARGET AUDIENCE: Physicians and other health care providers in a variety of practice settings who examine and treat children suspected of being victims of child abuse and/or neglect. 4 FEATURED SPEAKERS: Christopher S. Greeley, M.D. Presenting on: Evidenced Based Medicine (EBM)-What We Know and How We Know It? and Chronic Subdural Hematomas Dr. Greeley is recognized nationally as an expert in the fi eld of child maltreatment. He is an Attending Physician at LBJ Hospital in Houston, Texas and is the Vice-Chair for Academic Affairs in the Department of Pediatrics, University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston. Dr. Greeley will explore the importance of a critical literature appraisal and discuss how Evidenced Based Medicine applies to child abuse. The talk will focus on how to understand the medical literature in general, and will use examples of different quality of medical literature pertaining to child abuse and compare and contrast the strength of conclusions. The talk will also address different pitfalls which can occur when reading the medical literature. The presentation on Chronic Subdural Hematoma will focus on chronic subdural hematomas in children. We will discuss the macro and micro anatomy of the dural membrane and how subdural hematomas form. The talk will focus on what is known about the formation of chronic subdural hematomas in children. The goal is to help clinicians understand the complexity of chronic collections in children. 4
5 Debra Simms, M.D. Presenting on: Medical Resources System Services and Pornography Dr. Simms is the Division Chief of the Center for Child Protection at Helen DeVos Children s Hospital and is the Medical Director for the Medical Resources System (MRS) contract with the State of Michigan Department of Human Services. Dr. Simms is recognized as a medical expert in Michigan regarding child physical and sexual abuse injuries. During this session, she will explain the services provided under the MRS contract, explain how to assist communities establish their own medical resources and provide MRS contact information to all attendees. Dr. Simms will identify the current defi nition of pornography. She will also explain the infl uence technology has had on child pornography. Dr. Simms will identify perpetrator characteristics and will identify resources for further study or assistance. Sarah J. Brown, D.O. Presenting on: Failure to Thrive - How Thin is Too Thin? Dr. Brown is a Pediatrician with the Center for Child Protection at Helen DeVos Children s Hospital and specializes in completing medical evaluations on children suspected of being physically and sexually abused. Dr. Brown will discuss the accepted defi nition of Failure to Thrive, the continuum of physiologic to psychosocial root causes, the most common associated medical problems, and long term consequences. Dena Nazer, M.D. Presenting on: Mimics of Abuse Dr. Nazer is the Medical Director of the Child Protection Center at Children s Hospital of Michigan. Dr. Nazer completed her pediatric residency at Children s Hospital of Michigan/Wayne State Unversity and then completed a 2 year fellowship in Child Abuse. Dr. Nazer will present several conditions that may mimic child abuse. She will also advise on how to perform a thorough evaluation and reach a diagnosis when presented with a similar condition. 5
6 Collette Gushurst, M.D. Presenting on: Sexual Abuse - HPV and HSV Dr. Gushurst is employed with the Michigan State University, Department of Pediatrics, Kalamazoo Center for Medical Studies. She was the recipient of a Recognition Award from Children s Protective Services in West Virginia and has over 20 years of experience completing medical evaluations on suspected child abuse and neglect cases. Dr. Gushurst will identify the common clinical appearances of these infections and will discuss the ubiquitousness of HPV and the prevalence of HSV, along with the challenges of diagnosis and management of HPV and HSV as they relate to sexual abuse. Elaine Pomeranz, M.D. Presenting on: Court Testimony Dr. Pomeranz is a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physician at the University of Michigan. She served as the Medical Director of the Child Protection Team at the University of Michigan from Dr. Pomeranz has testifi ed in numerous court proceedings and will explain what a subpoena means and how to respond to it. She will also identify key steps to preparing for court testimony, along with offering tips on do s and don ts. Lisa Markman, M.D. Presenting on: Physical Abuse Dr. Markman is the Associate Medical Director of the Child Protection Team at the University of Michigan, Mott Children s Hospital. Dr. Markman will identify abusive versus non-abusive burn and bruise patterns of injury. She will also explain which fractures are concerning for abusive injuries and will differentiate the characteristics of adult, child and animal bite patterns. 6
