9 Access to services This guide contains a range of services that are both direct access and professional referral only. Direct access These services are open to all. They may provide a drop-in service, where you can access help and advice. They may also refer you on to specialist drug and alcohol treatment. Referral only You need a formal, professional referral to access these services. One of the direct access services, listed in this directory, will be able to put you in touch with the right option for you. These services offer structured treatment for your drug and alcohol use. Detoxification and residential rehabilitation If you need specialist medical treatment such as detoxification and residential rehabilitation, the drug and alcohol services listed in this directory can put you in touch with the right service. You may need funding to attend some residential, inpatient and day programme services. Please contact the substance use care management team for further information. Please see page 56.

10 Tier system Drug treatment services are split into four distinct tiers. Each tier deals with specific areas around substance misuse and some will be more suitable than others for you or the person you are trying to help. Tier 1 Services that are not specific to substance misuse, for example Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments, pharmacies, GPs, antenatal wards and social services. Tier 1 services offer things such as information and advice, screening for drug and alcohol misuse and referral to specialist drug and alcohol services.
