Aftercare Everyone who has successfully completed the addiction treatment programme receives 12 months of free aftercare. 7 Flexible and affordable psychotherapy options Our broad range of therapies aim to address, express and explore individuals' feelings in a supportive and safe environment. All of our experienced therapists are accredited or working towards their accreditation, and receive regular and ongoing supervision. We also supplement treatment programmes with a number of supervised exercise classes and activities to reflect the interests and skills of our service users. Therapeutic intervention Aim of therapy Cognition Provides skills that enable the individual to identify and challenge the links between dysfunctional thoughts, feelings and actions Awareness Encourages individuals to gain insight into their own behaviour and understand responses from other people, with a focus on personal responsibility Psychoeducational Enables the individual to improve their understanding of their condition in order to develop effective coping strategies which are can address a range of underlying issues, including: self esteem, anger, sleep difficulties or diet issues Creative and experiential Encourages different forms of expression through a range of mediums that may include: art therapy, craft workshops, psychodrama classes and mindfulness groups Specialist treatment programmes Embarking on recovery can be an emotionally turbulent time, so our multidisciplinary team of addiction clinicians have developed specialist programmes to address specific issues that may have arisen during the individual s treatment. Trauma reduction* This programme enables individuals to address emotional and psychological issues which may significantly affect their wellbeing and longer-term recovery. The week-long intensive therapy programme is run on a residential or day patient basis, and has been shown to prevent relapse and significantly reduce episodes of depression. Second-stage residential rehabilitation* This service focuses on social reintegration as well as completion of the full 12-step programme. Therapists work with individuals to address underlying emotional issues which can often trigger relapse if left unresolved. Individually tailored treatment programmes may include volunteer placements, training and life skills workshops. Renewal retreat Designed to enable the service user to enhance their recovery, our renewal retreat offers individuals who have completed the addiction treatment programme the opportunity to revisit the tools for relapse prevention learnt during their treatment, in order to remain abstinent. * Currently available at selected sites 7
8 Your first call in mental healthcare Convenient access to treatment Our rapid medical, nursing and therapy assessments provide recommendations for treatment to both the service user and their referring healthcare professional. We offer swift and convenient access to treatment at a GP surgery, via communitybased clinics and within employers' occupational health facilities. Improving access to psychological therapy (IAPT) Plus service For service users who have received treatment from the local IAPT service and require additional therapeutic support, we are able to supplement any ongoing treatment with our IAPT Plus service. IAPT Plus offers high intensity cognitive behavioural therapy as well as advice, guidance and support for individuals on antidepressant medication. Treatment is available via some clinical commissioning groups or may be selffunded. For more information, please contact your local Priory hospital. 8
9 Payment options: rapid access to the right help when it is needed most Choosing to self-fund treatment Treatment at a Priory hospital means that individuals will have the convenience of being able to book an appointment at a time to suit them, and the assurance that our specialist clinical teams will be able to deliver the right care with the best possible outcomes. A GP referral will usually be required prior to commencing treatment. Using private medical insurance The Priory Group are registered and approved providers for all of the UK s leading private medical insurance schemes. A GP referral will be required prior to commencing treatment. Different policies cover different levels of care, so for any queries, individuals should contact their private medical insurer or their local Priory hospital s admissions team. Corporate funding arrangements Since mental health illnesses are one of the leading causes of long-term absence from the workplace 3, Priory hospitals work with employers to facilitate treatment solutions for employees. Funding may be agreed directly from the employer or through a private medical insurer (individuals should contact their employer for more information). Working in partnership with the NHS We work in partnership with the NHS and other public bodies to deliver a range of mental health services, including emergency and out-of-hours placements, as well as long-term contractual arrangements. We provide a flexible range of treatment options for drug and alcohol action teams, clinical commissioning groups and other NHS service providers both within our hospitals and in primary care across the country. Personalised care pathways: John s story John* suffered from a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder that was exacerbating his alcoholism. Without proper therapeutic intervention that would enable him to manage his dual diagnosis, he had exhausted his local services and had relapsed after each detoxification programme. John s drug and alcohol action team contacted his local Priory hospital to provide a tailored package of care which would treat both the alcohol misuse as well as the underlying factors contributing towards his OCD. John was provided with intensive level of one-to-one psychological support to help him as he settled into his active substance misuse programme. As treatment progressed, he was then able to undertake a therapy programme that would provide him with the coping strategies to help overcome his OCD. Once his condition began to stabilise, John s clinical team were able to begin a comprehensive review of his discharge plan back into the community. He began to spend increased time away from the ward with support from his Priory team, which focused on leisure and domestic activities that would help him successfully reintegrate into community life. During this period of rehabilitation, it became apparent that John wanted to live independently upon discharge, rather than with his family. As a result, John s Priory hospital worked with his local community team to find a suitable residence for him and after three months he moved into his own flat. John is still living independently and has remained abstinent since. * Name changed to protect identity of service user admitted into the Priory Hospital Altrincham in National Institute for Clinical Excellence.
