John D'urso graduated from Colyton High School Trade School as DUX of the year in John has continued his higher education studies at university and was at the time I received the , at the Kennedy Space Centre competing in a NASA competition in the only Australian Team. July July 29 July 29 - August 2 July 30 July 30 Performing Arts Rehearsal Shopping Centre Performance Education Week Parent/Teacher Night Performing Arts Matinee PRINCIPAL S MORNING TEA On Friday June 7 many students attended the Principal s Morning Tea for Semester 1 where they were acknowledged for their academic achievements and outstanding attendance. It is always a pleasure to meet the parents who are able to attend the morning tea and see their children presented with their certificates. I wish to thank Mr Rao from the English faculty for the organisation of this event. July 31 August 2 Performing Arts Matinee Performing Arts Night Public Ed. Concert Rooty Hill HALF YEARLY REPORTS Throughout the term all students have undertaken their half yearly examinations and teachers are currently completing the half yearly reports that will be issued in Week 2, Term 3. Unfortunately we have had a couple of long term teacher absences and therefore in Technology and

2 Applied Studies some students will not be receiving a full comprehensive report this term. We have been fortunate to have a number of dedicated teachers who have stepped in to deliver lessons to students and maintain the ongoing learning and will therefore report on each student to the best of their ability. UNIFORM As we move into the winter months it is important that all students come to school dressed appropriately for the weather as they are moving in and out of the classrooms into the playground during recess and lunch times. For this reason I request that all students wear long pants, grey for junior boys and black for senior boys and black pants for girls or warm stockings with the school skirt, combined with the school shirt, jumper and the school jacket. In this way the students would be warmer then wearing some of the less then appropriate clothes that some students continue to wear. No female student should wear tights as pants to school or stockings under short shorts as they are inappropriate, not warm and students will be asked to change into school uniform. Parents will be contacted if a student presents at school wearing these items of clothing. Similarly only the school jumper or jacket should be worn. The students who wear any of the coloured jackets with hoods to school will be asked to change out of it into a school jumper. It is imperative that we provide a safe learning environment for all students who attend our school and with the increasing concerns about intruders and the number of attempted abductions of students in our local community all teachers MUST be able to identify the students who are enrolled at our school and those who are not. This safety cannot be guaranteed when students come to school out of uniform and with hoodies over their head. I request the support of all parents in our endeavours to keep all students safe by providing school uniform for all students and if there are financial hardships please contact the school and apply for assistance. students are encouraged to use the toilets before school, at recess and lunch times when they are supervised by a teacher who can be called upon to assist if conflict develops. If a student needs to use the toilet during class time they have to ask their teacher for a note to leave class and carry their swipe card to the front office to swipe into the academy system to obtain a key to use the toilets that are locked through class time. Again for the safety of all students, the toilets are locked through class time as there are no teachers on duty monitoring them and in the case of an emergency at the school all students need be located quickly and this also includes being at the toilet. All students must bring their swipe card to school every day and carry it to access the toilets during class time. Any student who does not have a swipe card should visit the front office and have their photo taken and swipe card will be produced for them. MRS CHERYL DWYER PRINCIPAL DEPUTY PRINCIPAL REPORT UNIFORM With the colder weather setting in, students are reminded that appropriate footwear and uniform should be worn at all times. The uniform shop is open each morning from 8am-8.30am (cash only) and is located at the back of the canteen. Wearing the correct uniform is very important and allows teachers to identify intruders or visitors to the school, and ensure the safety of each student. Students are encouraged to not wear shorts for the remainder of the term, and throughout term 3. If your child is out of uniform for any reason, a note signed by a parent or guardian should be given to the student s Roll Call teacher. A reminder about footwear, any type of canvas shoe (Rabens, Vans etc) are not to be worn to school at any time. Black leather upper shoes are suitable in all classes, and meet the safety requirements for specific subjects (eg. TAS, Art, Science), sports shoes are to be worn for practical PDHPE lessons and school sport on Wednesdays. Still focused on the issue of safety and security,

3 YEAR 11 Over the last two weeks, I have interviewed all students in Year 11 who have not submitted Assessment Tasks or classwork. These students have been issued with an N-Award Warning Letter. These are posted home with a copy of the task to be submitted, and the revised due date. Students receive a mark of zero for the task once submitted, but the task must be satisfactorily completed and submitted to progress through the Preliminary HSC Course, through to the HSC Courses starting in Term 4 this year. Ever seen the monthly phone or internet account and felt sick? It's called "bill shock", and there are many new ways families accidentally rack up hundreds of dollars of costs each month. The FEAR OF BEING LEFT OUT (FOBLO) is pressuring children to expand their use of digital resources in chasing their increased use of social media and SMS messaging KEEPING KIDS' PHONE AND DATA BILLS UNDER CONTROL The NSW Board of Studies requires students to maintain an attendance rate of 85% or greater in order to satisfactorily complete courses. Any students who are unsure if they have an outstanding task should speak to their class teachers. Mrs A Stenberg Mr S Casey Miss B Hunter Year Adviser Assistant Year Adviser Acting Deputy Principal POLICE LIAISON VISIT Senior Constable Gillen returned to our school on Tuesday June as a follow-up visit to his Term 1 Cyber-Safety presentations. This visit, he spoke with small groups of our junior students and answered many questions relating to Facebook, cyber-safety, bullying, graffiti and some recent changes to laws. Senior Constable Gillen was impressed with the behaviour of our students and the questions that they asked during the sessions, and will be returning throughout the year for follow-up visits. There is a link on our school website in the parents section, The article on the website is a must for all parents in this digital age and essential for student trying to manage money, phone and internet accounts. Luckily there's also now a fun, interactive website that's essential viewing for anyone with kids, phones and internet access. The Australian Securities and Investment Commission's MoneySmart Teaching website is packed with clever tools and simulations that teach young people how to avoid the traps of choosing and using mobile and internet plans. Chairman of the Australian Government's Financial Literacy Board, Paul Clitheroe, says the site's tools are invaluable as selecting the right phone and internet plan can be harder than buying a car or even a house. "Unless you've kept track for a month of how many text messages, calls and data you've used, you won't know what is the right plan for you," Paul says. "Then when you know your usage, you go into this market place of really complicated contracts and you probably won't find one that really suits you exactly." MoneySmart Teaching has been created to walk kids through simulations that explore the many issues they'll confront when they have a mobile phone, including: How to find the right plan The real cost of downloading images and videos through social media sites

I'd like to personally thank the girls for all their efforts on and off the court. The girls showed great sportsmanship and represented the school with pride and commitment. However, this is not the end of road for these girls. I am certain this will not be the last time we see them succeed together. Congratulations! The girls put in many hours during and after school, training to be the exceptional team they are today. Every game was played with pride, respect and also to have fun. VIRTUAL BABIES Year 11 and Year 12 students who are studying Exploring Early Childhood have had the opportunity to take part in the Real Care Baby Simulation Program. Students took on the role of being a parent for 3 nights, the parents took on the duties of feeding, burping, changing the nappies and caring for the baby. Students were marked on this as a practical assessment through the generated program installed in the baby. The program picked up on all the times

5 the baby cried and how well the students recognised what type of cry the baby had. All students had a great experience with the babies and have been achieving amazing results. MS M SULTANA TAS IMPORTANT DATES FOR 2013 YEAR 11 RETAIL The Year 11 Retail started real training on the networked phone system. The new 3CX system went live today with the students setting up their user accounts and configuring the settings to allow them access to all the features of a commercial business phone system. Students commented "This is so much fun and the first time I can use a phone properly and not get into trouble". Speed dial, call wait, transfer and voice mail are some of the advanced features. Students have recorded calls and ed them for assessment and validation. The school has also installed POS software for the Café and the retail class complete with receipt printers and cash drawers. Making the opportunities available to students more like the real world situation, we are also putting online motel and camping ground booking systems to give students in the retail and business services far more experience at operating different softwares and providing access to a greater range of employment opportunities.
