3 STUDENT SERVICES YEAR 7 COORDINATOR MR TWENI UBOR Students are provided with a wide variety of support staff and structures catering for students differing wellbeing needs. Student Services has a vital role in improving student attendance, addressing behavioural expectations within the school and to improve all students academic performance. The Student Wellbeing team endeavour to implement positive pastoral care programs and reward initiatives to recognise student achievement, attendance and behaviour.

5 ATTENDANCE School absenteeism and student attendance School absenteeism and student attendance is a complex issue which includes a range of student behaviours including school refusal and truancy. Safety Bay SHS is committed to improving student attendance at our school through a shared understanding of its importance by students, parents, caregivers, schools and the community. Students should be aiming for 90%.

6 ATTENDANCE All children should be enrolled at school and attend on every school day. Schools will monitor, communicate and implement strategies to improve regular school attendance. E.g. SMS, Reward Excursions, Letters, Attendance Cards, Attendance Panels. Truanting can place a student in unsafe situations and impact on their future employability and life choices. Attendance at school is the responsibility of everyone in the community. Please phone school to inform of your child s non-attendance as soon as possible so it can be accounted for!

7 BEHAVIOUR Positive student behaviours are most effectively developed and supported through relationship-based whole-school and classroom practices, and clearly communicated behavioural expectations. Some students exhibit challenging behaviour and require additional support and interventions to address this behaviour and to develop positive behaviours. Behavioural expectations, approaches to promoting positive behaviour, and consequences for breaching behavioural expectations should be set out in a school s Behaviour Management Policy. 9 SOCIAL MEDIA Social media is affecting how Australians behave, with 56 per cent of teens reporting they are heavy social media users (connecting 5+ times per day), with 25 per cent being constantly connected. Social media is both a cause of stress and a means of managing stress

10 SOCIAL MEDIA Social media dominates the life of many teens. Over half of Australian teens (53%) connect to social media 15 minutes before bed every night. Almost two in five connect (37%) in the presence of others and within 15 minutes of waking up. Almost one in four teens (24%) reported using social media when they were eating breakfast and lunch seven days a week

11 SOCIAL MEDIA 50% Teenagers experience Fear of Missing Out (FoMO): Teens connected to social media more frequently (five or more times a day, i.e. heavy users) are significantly more likely to experience aspects of FoMO such as: It is important that I understand my friends in-jokes (78%) Fearing their friends are having more rewarding experiences than them (54%) Worrying when they find out their friends are having fun without them (60%) Being bothered when they miss out on planned get-togethers (63%) Australian Psychological Society Stress and wellbeing in Australia survey 2015

12 SOCIAL MEDIA INSTAGRAM AND FACEBOOK Facebook requires everyone to be at least 13 years old before they can create an account (in some jurisdictions, this age limit may be higher). Creating an account with false info is a violation of our terms. This includes accounts registered on the behalf of someone under 13. If your underage child created an account on Facebook, you can show them how to delete their account.

14 SOCIAL MEDIA If you, as a parent, decide to allow your under-13 year old child on Instagram/Facebook, and clearly many parents do, I think you have to be able to answer a resounding "yes" to the questions below. 1. Do you know how to tick all the privacy settings needed for a high level of privacy? 2. Do you keep up to date with all the changes that Instagram and Facebook makes with its privacy settings? These are usually opt out rather than opt in, and there are regularly hidden changes. 3. Are you prepared to have an account yourself and "friend or follow your own child?

15 SOCIAL MEDIA 4. Will your child allow you to "friend or follow them? Note-it is very easy and more common than you think for children to have two separate accounts. I've seen them often during the course of my own research for my cyber safety classes for parents; one "clean" account for Mum and Dad, and one where they can let loose! 5. Do you understand how to help your child avert bullying online, and how they should best respond if bullied? Do you know where the "block" button is? 6. Can you honestly say you are sure of what your child is experiencing and is exposed to online? Studies show that many children are simply not telling their parents or carers if they are bullied or experience an unwanted approach, because they are afraid of being banned from access to the internet and their social networks.

16 CYBERBULLYING Cyber Intimidation or Cyber Bullying For example, it is easy to write bad things on the wall of one of his friends, or to mark a compromising photo or status insulting. In these cases, the victim may withdraw or delete identifying what is written on its own wall, but sometimes the damage is already done. Bullying has always existed between the young people, but Facebook provides an unprecedented forum of abusers. Stigma is only more painful for the victims. We need to educate the students about social networking and appropriate use before we give them the ability to freely access it for use!

17 POWERING DOWN! Things that can help include: No devices in the bedroom. This creates a bedroom atmosphere conducive to rest. Having a consistent night time routine. For teens, develop an evening routine that includes between half an hour to one hour of study or homework then quiet activities before bed. Balancing kids' daily screen time with exercise and outdoor time helps tire them out physically to ensure deep sleep. Setting a down time for their technology. Have the devices go on charge at a specified time each night, in a public spot in the house. Not only is this good for sleep routines but it ensures that the devices aren t in the bedroom for the wee hours of the night when cyberbullying is most likely to occur.

18 SCHOOL TIMETABLE Information provided! School starts at 8.30am, finishes at 2.40pm. Recess and Lunch each 25 minutes. Form is 10 minutes, information is read out, attendance addressed and teachers engage students from a pastoral care perspective.

22 HOMEWORK Revision v Homework At year 7 level, REVISION should be about 15 minutes done every night after the class (so 4 times a week). Get a notebook and spend 15 minutes summarising the day s lesson. Transfer any new words, concepts, diagrams into the notebook. The notebook becomes useful for exams or tests for revision later in the term HOMEWORK is not formally set like in Primary School. Homework is any work not completed in class.
