1 PROFILE THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT FOR ENQUIRING MINDS, INSPIRING TEACHING AND GROUND-BREAKING RESEARCH
2 AN INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY We are a high-performing Russell Group university with an environment in which enquiring minds, inspiring lecturers and world-class researchers can thrive. We combine academic excellence with an inclusive culture and our students graduate equipped to prosper in a global workplace. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Since our foundation in 1963, York s focus on academic excellence has resulted in our strong reputation across the globe. From small beginnings, with just over 230 students, we are now home to more than 16,000 students from 150 countries 40 per cent of our student body and 40 per cent of our faculty come from outside the UK. GLOBAL REPUTATION We are one of just a handful of universities less than 60 years old to have advanced so quickly into the World Top 100 league table. n 25th in the world for Arts and Humanities n 55th in the world for Life Sciences n One of the top 100 most international universities in the world. Source: 2015/16 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings WORLD-CLASS RESEARCH We have an outstanding research reputation and the excellence and impact of our research is reflected in our rankings. We performed strongly in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), which assesses all UK higher education institutions. n A top ten UK university for research impact n Fourteenth overall in the REF 2014 n Eight departments ranked in the top five n Twelve departments ranked in the top ten n One of the highest rankings for 4* world-leading research RESEARCH-LED TEACHING Our academics are world leaders in their field, undertaking research which has a global impact. Our students are taught by these researchers and benefit from their extensive knowledge and real-world experience. n We have invested over 13m in a new centrallylocated teaching building. It provides a variety of modern teaching spaces including a 350-seat lecture theatre, 26 seminar rooms and study areas. n We have a dedicated Graduate Research School and development team to support and train our research community.
3 WORLDWIDE COLLABORATION OUR GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPS We are a truly global university. Our staff and students come from all over the world and we have links with leading academic institutions and employers internationally. n We are a founding member of the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) which comprises 18 research universities from the US, Europe, China, Australasia and Africa. n As a member of the Santander Universities Network, we are linked with almost 1,000 universities in Latin America, Asia, North America and Europe. n Our Centre for Global Programmes offers an extensive programme of exchanges, overseas internships and summer schools designed to promote cultural awareness and boost students employability. WORKING TOGETHER We partner with UK universities to maximise our global research impact and ambition. n As a member of the N8 partnership we collaborate with the eight most researchintensive universities in the North of England. n We are a member of the White Rose University Consortium - a strategic partnership with the Universities of Leeds and Sheffield. The consortium has recently launched an office in Brussels as part of a long-term strategy in EU research policy and practice. INNOVATION WITH INDUSTRY We work with business, cultural and scientific organisations to develop innovative solutions to global challenges and help enhance our students skills and experience. n We were one of the first to locate businesses alongside academic centres of expertise on the York Science Park now home to more than 150 organisations ranging from start-ups to global enterprises. n We embed industrial teams in academic centres including GSK in the Centre for Novel Agricultural Products (CNAP) and IBM in the Department of Computer Science. PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT We are passionate about demonstrating the value of higher education and research and sharing our knowledge with the widest possible audience. n We host more than 200 public lectures, numerous music performances and plays every year. n We run the annual York Festival of Ideas with more than 60 city and national partners. The free festival, held over two weeks, is one of the largest festivals in the UK. n Our Centre for Lifelong Learning has provided adult education for more than 25,000 people from the local and wider community for over 25 years. n Our award-winning York Students in Schools scheme (YSIS) sees over 1,000 York students volunteer in local schools each year.
4 RESEARCH EXCELLENCE OUR GLOBAL IMPACT Our reputation for research excellence is founded on our passion to make a difference. The seven themes of our research strategy align our academic strengths to best meet the scientific, social and environmental challenges of our time. Creativity Our research considers the nature of creativity and the creative process across linguistic, cultural, aesthetic and cognitive dimensions. Working at the convergence of technology, digital games and interactive media, with leading partners in the creative economy, we can deliver new experiences to provoke, inform and entertain for the wider benefit of society. Culture and communication From prehistory to the present, our researchers explore every kind of cultural activity, product and practice, alongside every aspect of communications. They are developing new intellectual tools to make sense of human thought and behavior, and are advancing and challenging how we understand the world. Environmental resilience and sustainability We work on food scarcity, energy security, climate change, pollution and new generation biofuels. Our interdisciplinary research is providing the evidence base for policymakers to address the key global challenges facing ourselves and our planet, and shape a more sustainable future for us all. Health and wellbeing Our global reputation in biomedicine, health science, economics and the medical humanities begins with the fundamental understanding of health and disease in the past and the present, and progresses to evidence-based decision-making about future healthcare policies and therapies. Justice and equality Fairness, inclusivity, equality, and welfare, are policy fields where our research sets the political agenda. These areas also define our values and approach to meeting the social challenges of our time at national and international level. Risk, evidence and decision making In an increasingly complex world, our research is impacting on how decisions on risk are made and how they are shaped by technological, social and cultural factors. By drawing on our understanding of these factors, we can provide government and industry with better risk models and help influence policy. Technologies for the future Our researchers are developing novel technologies, processes and materials with the potential to transform the economic, environmental and social landscape. From precision plasma manufacturing to plants that can devour toxins, fundamental research is being rapidly translated into real-world solutions.
