4 Page 4 samoa news, Saturday, December 14, 2013 Saving the Whales and da Wheels Hawkeye was reading a piece in one of his periodicals the other day mentioning a pod of Whales that ran aground in the everglades way down younder in the Great Mosquito infested State of Florida. There were upwards of fifty two whales spotted in shallow water and unable to get their bearings. One old Redneck said that it wuz caused by that there ole global warmin! There was much controversy as to how they would get the whales headed back for deep water when the tide came in. One of the smarter Rednecks suggested that they could use all the Great Monty Pythons that they had captured to scare em out! Hawkeye has not heard the outcome of this endeavor, and is waiting with baited breath! Over. Hawkeye has finished his read for the week: Sweatshops in Paradise, By the now infamous author; Ms.Virginia Sudbury. This book sort of left Hawkeye Hanging after the middle as it was becoming clear that poor old Kil Soo Wee would be the scapegoat for the many actual Incorporating Officers, and shareholders of the company, Dawoosa Samoa. While the book does mention the ASG on several occasions, and further the mention of certain people whose names Hawkeye will not mention, it was- in Hawks opinion - Incomplete. Hawkeye thinks it is well worth the read for a hard cover price of $19.00 USD. Hawkeye has now moved over to his new book by Jessie Ventura; 63 things that your government does not wish you to know. This is proving to be a typical page turner by Jessie, and Hawkeye will tell you later on if he would recommend adding it to your Outhouse Collection. The Merry Old Christmas Season is nearing once again, and further testimony to the fact that we still celebrate the birth date of some character that kicked the bucket some 2,200 odd years ago. Never mind how he came about his demise, he could have escaped all that pain, grief and final deathly moments with Ms. Magdalene instead of hanging upside down on a part of an olive tree! He came into the temple and acted rude to the money changers and local tax collectors. He went ahead and knocked over the Tax Man s table, which got the attention of the high priests, who got the attention of King what s his name. This could have been easily avoided by holding his temper in check, hopping back on his donkey and Cuttin fo da Hut as they say in some of the Redneck States. But he didn t, and therefore gave us another Holiday! It seems as though some of the world s most diehard scientists wish to dispute the global warming theory. It makes no difference how we vote on the Global Warming theory the main thing is that we learn to survive it. While there are photos of the Ice Caps melting at alarming rates which is bound to have a spinoff effect, we should not stop drilling for oil! It is now becoming a matter of global survival and the winner of that title will be expected to jump out there in front and support the rest of the world. One fanatic wrote in one of the strange magazines that only those who Support the Jesus Theory will survive the global warming / climate change. Is the author of this article actually suggesting that Jesus has a bearing on the Global warming theory? Should this be the case, we should encourage more church membership! Instead, the Organized Religions are losing membership at alarming rates! We really need to monitor this subject folks, and see where the pointer points! Speaking of Global Warming and Jesus, Hawkeye must admit that he is writing this column through the inspiration of one of his favorite entertainers; Bob Dylan. Bob has a lot to say in his songs if one can listen long enuff. In his earlier days as a a young entertainer, his main goal in life was to become a bum. This is when he was roaming the rolling hills of Southeastern Oklahoma with Merle Haggard and Buck Owens. There was a lot of Pot Smoking happening in those days amongst most performers of the era Hawkeye supposes that we all still need mentors no matter how old we get. For instance Our Presetene has The Reverned Jeremiah Wright and Oprah, as well as Mr. Ayers. Hawkeye still has his original mentors: Mickey Mouse, Tom Mix, Billy Graham s Cat, and Alfred E. Newman! And speaking of conservation, we must preserve our wheels while we have wheels. No matter if the wheels are on a 13th Century Chariot or a 2014 Jeep Wrangler. We must all learn to preserve, in order to persevere! While we are at it, we must learn to take more seriously the latest methods of preserving our culture. This is some serious s*#t Fans. We all gotta come together as one big blob and pony up for each other and for the way we live. In doing so, we will certainly persevere! Sweet Leanor is working day by day with Hawkeye to achieve perseverance. Perseverance should be the order of the day for all Homo-sapiens of the Planet Utopia, and points beyond! Until Next week; Love from Sweet Leanor and the Hawk. (Editors Note: The views expressed in this column are those of the author, and do not necessarily reflect those of Samoa News.) Compiled by Samoa News staff ARGOSY UNIVERSITY HANDS OUT SCHOLARSHIPS TO ASCC PTK MEMBERS Nine graduating students who are members of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society of the American Samoa Community College, were each awarded a scholarship by Argosy University- Hawai i for a Bachelor s degree program. You should be proud of your academic accomplishments, wrote Kim Perez Hults, of Argosy Admissions to the recipients in separate letters. We are awarding you a $6,000 scholarship to attend Argosy University, to be prorated over the length of your program. The scholarship award ceremony was held Tuesday evening at Tradewinds Hotel, where the local office of the university is housed and offers online courses. Dr. Toafa Vaiaga e, director of the American Samoa campus provided the keynote address, saying that the scholarship program is the university s contribution to furthering the education of American Samoa students, adding that they are fully aware of the importance of education and the reason for providing this scholarship program. In her letter to recipients, Hults said the university offers five Bachelor degree programs for the graduates to choose from: psychology, business administration, liberal arts, information technology and criminal justice. The next bachelor program for spring semester begins Jan. 2, Hults, along with university vice president, Zachary Oliver, arrived Monday night from Honolulu to take part in the ceremony. Oliver expressed the university s goal of furthering the education of local students saying he is pleased that they are able to provide the scholarship awards. Scholarship recipients are: Seong Hee Hong, Marietta Lafaele, Maria Lorraine Magalasin, Wittenburg Mariner, Sia Niupulusu, Paulo Saulo, Zhiao Seng, Merieni Tupuimatagi and Nikolao Alo. Today these students are among those graduating in the ASCC 2013 Winter Graduation ceremony, which begins today at 10:00am. Argosy University s first local graduation was held August this year with 35 students graduating with their Master of Arts in Education in Teaching and Learning, according to Samoa News archive. LOLO NOT ATTENDING THE WESTERN GOVERNOR S CONFERENCE Gov. Lolo Matalasi Moliga was not in attendance at this week s Western Governors Association (WGA) Winter Meeting in Las Vegas, where there was to be discussion on regional policy issues, however he is getting details directly from WGA. The governor s executive assistant Iulogologo Joseph Pereira says Lolo is not leaving the territory any time soon due to pressing issues at home, but plans to leave about the second week of February next year. The two-day WGA meeting, which ended on Wednesday, had Interior Department Secretary Sally Jewell delivering the keynote address, where she underscored DOI s commitment to collaborative, landscape-level solutions to conservation and water issues. She highlighted her recent Secretarial Order establishing a Department-wide mitigation strategy to encourage balanced development and landscape-level planning on federal public lands. The Order seeks to ensure consistency and efficiency in the review and permitting of new energy and other infrastructure development projects, while also providing for the conservation, adaptation, and restoration of our nation s valuable natural and cultural resources, according to DOI. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ELECTS NEW BOARD During its General Membership meeting Wednesday, the Chamber of Commerce elected its seven member executive board, which will meeting soon to select the chairman, co-chairman, secretary and treasurer. The new board are Jason Betham, Brett Butler, Lewis Wolman, Isabel Hudson, Laufai Fanene, Peter Crispin and Tom Drabble. Prior to the election process, out-going board chairman David Robinson shared some business highlights of 2013, saying that as predicted by the Chamber in late 2012, this year proved to be a challenging one for many small and medium size businesses, according to a copy of his remarks provided to Samoa News on the occasion. Apart from Tri Marine International, StarKist Samoa, the ASG owned shipyard and certain parts of the construction sector, not much has been seen in the way of new job creation and there has not been very much in the way of new investment, said Robinson, adding that there needs to be new investment for the territory. He did point out that a bright spot in recent times has seen a reduction in the cost of electricity. And how is 2014 looking from a business perspective? My view is more of the same that we have experienced during the past 12 months unless there is some form of new investment that will provide a considerable number of new jobs, he said, adding that this is something which is not likely to happen in the short term. He also shared some of the activities by the Chamber in For example, the Chamber continues to provide input into the air transport marketing study (which is funded by the U.S. Department of Interior and early last year ASG contracted the $599,999 project to UBM Aviation-ASM, based in Washington D.C.) According to Robinson, the study should be ready early next year and will hopefully assist the American Samoa Visitors Bureau to bring more tourists here and assist commercial companies by identifying more frequent and cheaper air freight services. In closing, Robinson expressed his appreciation to the Chamber for their support during the five-years as chairman. He did not seek a post for the new year, but will remain a member of the business association. [photo: TG] Samoana High s concert glows with holiday spirit By Jeff Hayner, Samoa News Reporter The Samoana High School Music Department put on a gala Christmas Concert this past Thursday evening to a packed house at the Governor H. Rex Lee Auditorium. Called Jesus is the Reason it was led by the school s vibrant Tautua Choir and school band. The choir which is led by Choir Director Pati Pati, had 205 members singing Carol of the Bells, along with patriotic hymns such as Star Spangled Banner and the Amerika Samoa National Anthem. The band, led by Tavita Lemisio, played Christmas classics that included, We Wish you a Merry Christmas, Angels We Have Heard on High and When the Saints Go Marching In as well as Beethoven s Ode to Joy from Symphony 9. We have been working two months on this, and it turned out fabulous, said the Choir Director. The kids should be proud of themselves. They worked hard every day and it showed with their performance. We thank everyone who came and helped out with their support, said Choir Director Pati, adding that some choir members will be going on tour in March next year to Apia, Samoa. Tavita Lemisio said the school s young band just started playing this past August, and only started reading notes when school started, after which they began to learn how to play their instruments. The hardest thing with the band is that we only started here at the high school level, because there is no band program in the elementary school level, said Lemisio. But when it comes to the choirs, he said, they sing everyday in the schools, churches and other places at an early age. At the high school level is when they start to learn how to play these instruments, and I guess that s because they are expensive. From 1996 to 2000 there were elementary school bands but then they started to fade away. Now we only have a few high schools with bands and we are the largest one. I hope someday there will be more schools, especially elementary schools with bands, he said. Samoa News spoke with some of the choir members who said they had a great time performing for the packed house at the auditorium. I had a a lot of fun singing in front of my family, especially my mom and dad, said one choir member. Said another, I m glad Pati is here working with us and it s good to hear the band playing at these events. I hope there is a lot more of these type of events with the band and choir. There were approximately 500 people in attendance. The Tautua Choir also sang again yesterday at the High School Music Festival at the auditorium. (AP Photo/Markus Schreiber) 100,000 gather to see Nelson Mandela, many turned away PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) An estimated 100,000 South Africans lined up in Pretoria to view Nelson Mandela in his casket but about a third of the overwhelming crowd was sent away without being able to file past the bier. Many of the frustrated mourners fought back tears of disappointment on the third and last day of the revered leader s lying in state. Mandela s coffin was taken away by a military guard to 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria. The anti-apartheid icon will be flown Saturday to his rural home in Qunu, Eastern Cape where he will be buried on Sunday. Hundreds of people cheered and some burst into song when Mandela s cortege left Pretoria s Union Buildings, the seat of government, for the last time Friday evening. It was amazing, said Keneilwe Mohapi, who stood with her mother as the impressive motorcade went by. We couldn t ask for a more fitting end. It s an honor to say goodbye to him properly. We re mourning, but I m grateful, the 27-year-old said. He changed my life. Many waited under a hot sun for four or five hours in a line snaking through an open field to busses that would take the lucky ones to see Mandela. I feel like I ve lost a once in a lifetime opportunity, said 22-year-old student Caiphus Ramushun. I m frustrated because I got so close, he added, saying he was only about 100 people away from making it to the buildings. I spent eight hours in line. I came so close to going on. Instead I was turned away, he said. Mandela s body was on display since Wednesday, with larger and larger crowds trying to view it each day. About 70,000 mourners were able to file past the casket Friday, government spokeswoman Phumla Williams said. But Friday s surge overwhelmed planners, who were not able to move people through security checkpoints and onto busses quickly enough. Officials were handing out water to those waiting. The area where people stood in line was so crowded that it became a city-within-acity: Entrepreneurs set up barbecue grills and sold Mandela memorabilia, including T-shirts imprinted with his smiling face and words: May he rest in peace. Shortly before Mandela s casket was removed and taken to a nearby military hospital, a crowd of several hundred mourners eager to pay their last respects broke through police barriers and raced up toward the Union Buildings. An AP reporter witnessed the crowd storming up the hill toward Mandela s casket and police then chased them over several hundred meters before being able to stop them. The people were joyous as they raced toward temporary structure where Mandela was on view in his coffin. No violence erupted as police peacefully brought them back in line, according to the reporter. Earlier in the day people also pushed open a police gate. Some fell to the ground as the crowd surged, and several were slightly injured. The government closed all nearby parking facilities around midday because of the huge crowds. Many people said they were bitterly upset and some said the government had done a poor planning job. I don t think this government understands what Mandela means to so many people, said Ali Ndlovu, a 47-year-old telecoms technician who stood in line for several hours before being turned back. If they understood, they would have given us more than three days. I m just very disappointed. Some of those who succeeded in viewing the body wept at the sight of the revered anti-apartheid leader in a coffin. A clear bubble allowed people to see his upper body with white hair, a gaunt face and dressed in one of his trademark colorful shirts. Mourner Elizabeth Leening said she got up at 3 a.m. and headed toward the Union Buildings an hour later to pay her last respects to Mandela. We have been standing in the queue now for four hours to see Madiba, she said, using Mandela s clan name as a sign of affection and respect. Mandela, who was jailed for 27 years during white rule and later became South Africa s first black president, died Dec. 5 in his Johannesburg home after a long illness at the age of 95. He will be buried in a state funeral in his remote childhood home, Qunu, in the southeast of the country on Sunday. Britain s Prince Charles, some African leaders and celebrities like Oprah Winfrey are expected to attend the burial with Mandela family members and South African leaders.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) At age 107, World War II veteran Elmer Hill doesn t have many elders left. That s why meeting a fellow veteran and Texan who s three months his senior was a bit of a shock Friday. Upon seeing Richard Overton for the first time, Hill suggested he might have to change his birthday. He s 107? Well, I better move mine up a little bit! Hill exclaimed. The pair, who both fought in the war s Pacific theater, met at an Austin senior center where they shook hands warmly, had lunch and were honored by Mayor Lee Leffingwell. Some have said that Overton and Hill are the oldest and second-oldest living veterans in the U.S., but others dispute the claim and there is no way to fully verify who is right. Overton worked at a furniture store and is a former courier at the state Capitol who grew up in Austin, where he still lives. Hill, a retired high school principal, lives in the East Texas community of Henderson and was driven about 240 miles for the event, which was organized by Emeritus Senior Living. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs does not have a complete list of all Americans who have served in the armed forces, making it impossible to know for sure that Overton and Hill are the nation s oldest veterans. Still, Overton went to Washington for Veterans Day this year and was personally recognized by President Barack Obama. Hill, meanwhile, is set to visit Washington on Saturday. His mind sharp and his wit quick, Overton quips about smoking cigars and having an occasional drink. As he stood outside the center amid chilly rain waiting for Hill s car, he joked that he hoped his new friend was bringing whiskey. Both are black, and during lunch, Hill talked about being drafted in 1942 into the then-segregated armed forces, and serving in the Navy. He was a cook and gunner on an aircraft carrier. I didn t volunteer. They put me in there, he said. Asked later what advice he had for younger generations, Hill said: Be good to yourself and your master and be a good citizen, wherever you are, whether it s Navy, Army or just as a person at the house. He also joked, I m not that old. I ve just been here a very long time. Back then, blacks were assigned to all-black units and, at the start of World War II, they were often relegated to noncombat duties. As fighting continued, the heavy number of casualties forced the military to assign black troops to combat, and their numbers there spiked by Overton was already in his 30s when he volunteered and served in the Army s 188th Aviation Engineer Battalion. He was at Pearl Harbor just after the Japanese attack. I want to ask him a few questions about the war, Overton said of Hill. You re still fighting a war, you know. Now you re just fighting one with yourself. With both hard of hearing, however, conversation on specific topics proved difficult. Born May, 11, 1906, Overton recalled as a youngster seeing soldiers preparing for World War I. He said he was on a bridge and watched thousands of enlisted men arriving at Austin after walking 90-plus miles from San Antonio because there was no room for them on overcrowded trains. Later, he found himself a soldier. Some things you went through in that Army you will never forget, he said. But it s too much to tell. You can t tell it all. happy hour from 4:30pm to 9pm with free pupus! 15 samoa news, Saturday, December 14, 2013 Page 15 Hawaii survivor: Plane lost power, then glided HONOLULU (AP) After a 70-year-old Hawaii man survived a flight that crash-landed in Hawaii waters, he swam about a half-mile in 6-foot waves to Molokai s rugged shoreline, thinking the eight others aboard the small commercial plane were fine bobbing in their life vests, awaiting rescue. C. Phillip Hollstein Jr. said he was surprised to learn later that one of the travelers was killed, Hawaii Health Director Loretta Fuddy. The others on board suffered only minor injuries. When the lone engine of the small plane failed, the nine people on board stayed calm as the aircraft glided toward the ocean and made a remarkably smooth belly landing, Hollstein recounted. He said the pilot, Clyde Kawasaki, expertly maneuvered the plane after the engine failed, avoiding what could have been a catastrophic impact on the water. He did everything right, Hollstein said. He set it up for the best crash-landing you could do. The engine on Makani Kai Air s 2002 Cessna Grand Caravan turboprop cut out less than a minute after takeoff from the island of Molokai on Wednesday afternoon, just as the plane was making a turn toward its destination of Honolulu, Hollstein said. There was a muffled bang, he said, and then we were a glider. Everyone was real quiet. We hit (the water), and it was all about getting the belts off, Hollstein said. People put on life jackets and remained in the plane until it started sinking, he said. There wasn t panic or anything. It was very orderly. It wasn t like any of the movies or the TV shows, Hollstein said. Hollstein swam for shore when he saw that everyone was out of the plane, guessing it took 90 minutes. Fuddy, who gained attention after deciding to publicly release President Barack Obama s Hawaii birth certificate in 2011 to rebut claims he was not born in the United States, was clinging to the hand of her deputy, Keith Yamamoto. Yamamoto tried to help the 65-year-old relax, according to the Rev. Patrick Killilea, who consoled Yamamoto after the crash. He recounted how he said he helped Loretta into her life jacket and he held her hand for some time, the priest said. They were all floating together, and she let go and there was no response from her. Hollstein said Fuddy was doing fine during the landing and getting out of the airplane. Her assistant was really watching her. He was taking care of her, he said. Kawasaki, a 60-year-old veteran pilot, and the other passengers were pulled from the water by rescuers. Kawasaki was flown to Honolulu, and when his son, Robert Kawasaki, met him at the airport, he still was wearing his wet pants. The elder Kawasaki banged his head on the plane s control panel during the crash, and his son took him to a hospital for treatment. He s very broken up about (Fuddy s death), the son said. Fuddy and Yamamoto were on the flight after an annual visit to Kalaupapa, where the state exiled leprosy patients until The settlement is still run by the health department, though only a few former leprosy patients live there. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash and probably won t have the benefit of examining the plane. The location of the wreckage, combined with wind conditions, likely means it won t be recovered, NTSB spokesman Eric Weiss said. Makani Kai Air owner Richard Schuman said he has no idea why the engine failed. The plane had no previous problems, he said. John Frank, executive director of the Cessna Pilots Association, said the Grand Caravan has a reliable engine. It s very unusual to have an inflight failure of this engine almost unheard of, actually, unless there s some contributing factor like fuel not being available to the engine or something, Frank said. Robert Kawasaki said his father has had a lifelong passion for flying and didn t panic when the engine went out. To land on its belly with all the waves, that s pretty impressive, he said. He s a glider pilot, too. So he knows what to do when a plane is stuck in a glide. Fuddy was aboard a small plane carrying nine people that crashed into the ocean Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013 off the Hawaiian island of Molokai, officials said. Fuddy died in the crash. The eight others onboard, including the pilot, survived. The Makani Kai Air plane, bound for Honolulu, went down about a half-mile northwest of Kalaupapa peninsula, Maui County Fire Department spokesman Lee Mainaga said in a statement.
