African boy found in suitcase reunited with mother MADRID (AP) An 8-year-old Ivory Coast boy caught being smuggled into Spain in a suitcase last month was reunited Monday with his mother. A statement from the city of Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in North Africa, said Adou Ouattara was returned to his mother at a youth center where he has been cared for since border police discovered him May 7 in the suitcase of a Moroccan woman. Police images of the scanned case shocked many and highlighted the harrowing plight of migrants trying to reach Europe. The boy s father, who lives legally with the mother in Spain, was arrested hours after the boy was discovered and remains jailed on rights abuse charges for trying to have him smuggled into the country. Through his lawyer, the father has said he knew nothing of the suitcase plan, believing his son was to be brought in by car with a visa he had paid for. The Moroccan woman, who was unrelated to the boy, has also been detained. Spanish authorities allowed the mother to take custody of the boy after DNA tests proved they were related. The mother and the boy were accompanied by lawyer Juan Isidro Fernandez Diaz, who said they had paid the father s bail and hoped he would be released soon. The father has been living legally on the Spanish Canary Island of Fuerteventura for seven years. His Ivory Coast wife had joined him and they were trying to bring over two of their children. His lawyer said an 11-year-old daughter was allowed in recently but Ouattara s monthly salary fell short of the amount authorities required to care for two children. It was then that the father bought the visa. tusia Ausage Fausia SOLOFUA LE ISI MATAUPU FA ASAGA IA ATIONO TALAMOA Ua talia e le fa amasinoga maualuga i le aso ananafi se talosaga na fa aulu e le itu a le malo, ina ia solofua le isi mataupu lea sa tu uaia ai le ali i o Ationo poo Ah Chong Talamoa i le moliaga mamafa o le fa ao olima i le tulaga lua, ina ua le mafai e le malo ona fa aauau lenei mataupu. On your face! the officer yelled at the girl, amid screaming from a crowd of onlookers. The officer s actions raised tensions and led to a protest Monday in this Dallas suburb, where some community activists accused him of racism while others urged calm until the facts are investigated. Jahi Adisa Bakari, the father of another teenage girl at the party, said he would press for the officer to be fired, saying he was out of control. But Benét Embry, a black local radio personality who witnessed the incident, said it was not another Ferguson or another Baltimore, referring to other police encounters that have left suspects dead and fueled a nationwide Black Lives Matter movement. This was a teenage party that got out of hand, Embry said. Police said some of the young people did not live in the area and did not have permission to be at the pool in McKinney, an affluent, predominantly white city. According to neighbors, Embry said, a woman who lives in the community reserved the pool for a party. The homeowners association limits the number of guests each homeowner may have at the pool to two. But about 130 people, mostly kids, showed up for the woman s party, he said. At one point, several kids began jumping over the fence to get into the pool area and were causing a disturbance, Embry said, and a couple of fights broke out. While he did not agree with the officer s profanity or belligerence, Embry said, police were right to respond. That s what they are supposed to do protect us, he said. I don t know any other way he could have taken her down or established order. The officer has been placed on administrative leave. In a statement, the police department said the video raised concerns that are being investigated. City spokeswoman Anna Clark identified the officer as 41-yearold David Eric Casebolt, who joined the police force in August Prior to that, he served almost two years as a state trooper, according to records from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. Casebolt took eight hours of cultural diversity training at Collin County Community College in February He has also taken courses in racial profiling and use of force. As police broke up the crowd, the officer pulled the bikini-clad girl to the ground, then used his knees to pin her down. He also pointed his gun at other teens and cursed. The girl claimed the officer told her to walk away but forced her down after he thought we were saying rude stuff to him, according to an interview she gave to television station KDFW. He grabbed me, twisted my arm on my back and shoved me in the grass and started pulling the back of my braids, Dajerria Becton, 15, told the station. I was telling him to get off me because my back was hurting bad. Brandon Brooks, the teen who recorded the video, told KDFW that tensions rose after a white woman and a black teenager at the party had an altercation. He said the white woman told the teen to go back to Section 8 housing, a reference to federal housing aid given to low-income families. The comment holds extra significance in McKinney, which has been the target of lawsuits accusing its housing authority of racially segregating Section 8 housing. One long-running lawsuit was settled with a consent decree in 2012 that aimed to open up the west side to subsidized housing. Brooks said that the officer was out of line and that he felt compelled to keep filming when Casebolt pulled out his gun. At that point, my heart did drop and I was scared that someone was going to get shot and possibly killed, he said. McKinney Mayor Brian Loughmiller said city officials plan to meet with community leaders to discuss the incident. We really need to come together as a community, the mayor said. On Monday night, hundreds of demonstrators marched from an elementary school to the pool in protest of Casebolt s actions. Some carried signs that included the phrases, My skin color is not a crime, and, Don t tread on our kids. Nikki Perez, a black resident of McKinney, attended a City Council meeting Monday to express her concern over the officer s actions. I don t excuse the behavior of those teenagers, but if I call 911, then I wouldn t want that cop to respond, Perez said. He blew his credibility when he opened his mouth and started cursing at the kids. Robert Taylor, a criminology professor at the University of Texas at Dallas who has done studies for the McKinney Police Department, said both the officer and the teens at the pool party acted inappropriately. The teens were not following police orders, he said, but the officer s decision to pull out his gun did not help.
5 samoa news, Tuesday, June 9, Page B5 G7 climate vision requires a huge economic shift STOCKHOLM (AP) When leaders of the Group of Seven wealthy countries pledge to decarbonize the global economy, they re talking about a shift so dramatic that one analyst described it as a new Apollo mission. Like putting a man on the moon, it would require overcoming major hurdles related to technology and money and the political will so far in short supply to make it happen. Despite gains by renewable energy sources in recent years, the world is still hooked on fossil fuels that are powering our homes and businesses and fueling our cars, trucks, airplanes and ships. The resulting release of heat-trapping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere keeps rising, primarily because of fast growth in China, India and other emerging economies. CO2 emissions from fossil fuels now exceed 30 billion tons a year, according to the International Energy Agency. What President Barack Obama and other G-7 leaders envisioned in Germany on Monday is a world where those emissions would be phased out by the end of the century. Above all that would entail a major shift in how the world produces electricity, about two-thirds of which comes from the burning of fossil fuels, mainly coal and gas. Scaling up solar, wind, geothermal, nuclear, hydro-power and perhaps other renewable sources still to be developed is possible, but that requires policies, such as carbon taxes, that make them more competitive compared to coal or natural gas. We have to be honest: coal is a very, very cheap energy carrier. Therefore we need a carbon price, said Ottmar Edenhofer, a prominent member of the U.N. s expert panel on climate science. Putting a price on carbon is highly contentious politically in many countries. The U.S. Senate turned down such a proposal in Australia s current government repealed a carbon tax introduced by the previous government. Making renewables that depend on the weather such as wind and solar power more competitive would also require technological advances, primarily how to store energy more efficiently. Decarbonizing the transportation sector is even more complicated. There are of course already vehicles running on electricity or biofuels. But fuels made from oil still dominate and it will probably be a long time before they can be substituted at a large scale in aviation and shipping, though experiments with biofuels and even solar power are underway. Also, replacing fossil fuels to generate the intense heat required for some industrial processes like steel production isn t likely to happen anytime soon. That s why many scientists and economists say demands by some environmental activists for a complete phase-out of fossil fuels are unrealistic. Instead, they say the fight against climate change will have to include efforts to capture CO2 emissions from fossil fuels and bury them deep underground where they don t affect the climate. The U.N. climate science panel projected last year that such technologies, which already exist at a small scale, may have to be applied to achieve negative emissions in the future, because the world isn t expected to bring down its emissions fast enough in the near term. That could entail, for example, using biofuels for power generation and then capturing their emissions. But even that is not without problems: large-scale biofuel crops could end up replacing food crops or threatening biodiversity. The G-7 leaders didn t address in detail how to resolve all these issues. In U.N. climate talks on an envisioned pact in Paris later this year, countries have a hard time agreeing on much smaller things, like whether to renew their individual climate targets every five or 10 years. Still, the message from the leaders of the world s most powerful developed countries is important because it s the first time they acknowledge what needs to happen to keep global temperatures from reaching dangerous levels, said Jeffrey Sachs, a Columbia University economist and U.N. special adviser. It does mean in practice an enormous shift from a fossil fuelbased energy system to near-zero carbon energy sources. It s a big deal, he said. Not unlike the Apollo mission. KB MATH ACADEMY P.O. Family accepts a Navy Cross after fight for Medal of Honor CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (AP) The family of one of the most celebrated Marine heroes of the Iraq War on Monday accepted the nation s second-highest award for valor on his behalf seven years after the Pentagon denied him the Medal of Honor. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus posthumously bestowed the Navy Cross on Sgt. Rafael Peralta for falling on a grenade during the battle for Fallujah in November The Navy and Marine Corps had recommended the Medal of Honor, but then-defense Secretary Robert Gates denied the award in 2008 amid questions about whether Peralta was too injured to understand what he did. The decision came after the inspector general of the Defense Department fielded a complaint and Gates assembled a team of experts that concluded unanimously that he couldn t have consciously pulled the grenade under him. Gates wrote in his memoir that he initially approved the Medal of Honor, but he reversed himself after the lengthy investigation, saying the panel s findings left him no choice. The decision outraged many Marines. It was upheld by Leon Panetta and Chuck Hagel, who followed Gates as secretaries of defense. Rosa Peralta, the Marine s mother, long refused to accept the Navy Cross, which is the second highest decoration for valor of a member of the Navy or Marine Corps, and is equivalent to the U.S. Army s Distinguished Service Cross. Ricardo Peralta, Rafael s brother, said his mother relented as plans progressed to name a missile destroyer after the fallen Marine. She plans to donate the medal to the USS Rafael Peralta when it is christened later this year. She felt, for the first time, something that displayed his spirit in essence, Ricardo Peralta, 24, who followed his brother into the Marines, told reporters. That gave her a complete change of heart. She thought it was appropriate for now for her to receive the Navy Cross. Rosa Peralta didn t address the audience of about 200 invited guests or speak with reporters after the ceremony. Rafael Peralta, a naturalized U.S. citizen who was born in Mexico City and raised in San Diego, was 25 when he was shot while attempting to clear a house in Fallujah. The Navy Cross citation says insurgents tossed a fragmentation grenade that landed near the head of the wounded Marine. Without hesitation and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, Sgt. Peralta reached out and pulled the grenade to his body, absorbing the brunt of the blast and shielding fellow Marines only feet away, the citation reads. Mabus, an appointee of President Barack Obama who recommended in 2012 that Peralta receive the Medal of Honor, said at the ceremony that Peralta was a true patriot. He declined to comment on the controversy when asked by reporters. This man protected his Marines, he protected his country, he protected the values we all hold so dear up to the moment of his final breath, Mabus told the audience. U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter, a Marine veteran who served in Iraq and attended the ceremony, said Peralta deserved the Medal of Honor. The California Republican predicted a fight to upgrade the award when the time is right. The distinction between the awards doesn t change the fact that there are Marines alive today who say, without condition, that Rafael Peralta saved their lives, Hunter said. The team got off to a slow start several players called it choppy but broke open a 1-all tie with Australia after the first half for a 3-1 victory in the World Cup opener on Monday night. Megan Rapinoe scored twice for the U.S. women. It was the first game, and there are some players out there who haven t played in a big tournament before, midfielder Carli Lloyd said. I think we ll get better and better as each game goes on. The win gives the second-ranked Americans three points to start play in Group D, the so-called Group of Death, after a 3-3 draw in the group s opening match between fifth-ranked Sweden and upstart Nigeria, ranked No. 33. Next up for the United States is Sweden and former U.S. coach Pia Sundhage, which many are calling the most anticipated match of the group stage. But Sweden had trouble stopping a surprisingly fast Nigerian side. Australian coach Alan Stajcic was impressed with the tenacity of the Super Falcons. I think they were fantastic today. They should have won that game based on the minutes that I saw, Stajcic said. Sweden plays the United States on Friday night, following Nigeria s match against 10th-ranked Australia, which came out inspired on Monday night before the Americans put it away. U.S. coach Jill Ellis said she thought it was good to be challenged at the start of a tournament and survive. I think when the draw happened and people talked about the Group of Death, that was the one positive. You re not going to ease into these opening games, she said. You ve got to be prepared from the very first whistle. So I think in terms of mentality, having tough matches and going into a halftime tied up, I think those things serve you well down the line. WATCH YOUR HEAD: U.S. defenseman Ali Krieger, sidelined in April by a concussion she sustained in the season opener for her NWSL team, the Washington Spirit, wore a protective headband in the opening match. The Halo headband, a product of Pennsylvania-based Unequal Technologies, is made with military-grade protective material designed to absorb and disperse impact to the head. I want to be safe, Kreiger said. I m afraid that if I get hit again, I may have to hang up the boots, and I don t want to that. I want to be safe: It s bigger than me, it s about the team. It s about this World Cup. A coach for one of the swimmers told Samoa News that she is happy with the preparations and is overwhelmed with the commitment shown by her swimmer. After competing in some swimming meets in the U.S. over the last two months, the three members of the American Samoa Swimming Team will be heading to the Pacific Games with the only one goal in mind to win medals for American Samoa. The three swimmers who are now confirmed to represent American Samoa are Tilali Rose Leslie Scanlan and the two Hardman brothers, Daniel Tamatoa and William Tairiata. All three were born in American Samoa, and they re attending school in Hawai i and the U.S. mainland. 10 Page B10 samoa news, Tuesday, June 9, Patrice Olivier from the Philippines, right, is taken down by his opponents from Malaysia, during the Rugby 7s men s gold medal match at the SEA Games in Singapore, Sunday, June 7,. (AP Photo/Joseph Nair) Singing, dancing brotherhood lifting Philippines rugby players SINGAPORE (AP) Jolly Gomez devised a unique benchmark for recruiting overseas-born players for the Philippines: If you can remember your mother forcing you to get up and sing in front of the family, you re in. And so it was that the Philippines could assemble a rugby sevens squad featuring players from places like France, Australia, the United States and Japan for the Southeast Asian Games, where they took a bow on the weekend after an undefeated run to the gold medal. They can sing; they can dance, as they did on the victory podium in Singapore; and they can certainly play rugby. Next target is the Asian qualifying tournament in November for the 2016 Olympics. Jake Letts was raised near Sydney s northern beaches, a quintessentially Australian place. But he grew up with his mother keeping some strong Filipino traditions alive, and he laughs when he recalls selection criteria espoused by Jolly, who works for the Philippines Sports Commission. That s what it is, Letts said. You have to do that it s all the food, it s singing, dancing... all part of it. His mother was from the Philippines, one of nine our family is huge, said Letts, who has played for the Philippines for a decade and lives in Manila. He came to it by chance in his last year of high school, through a friend at the Warringah Rugby Club who knew of the Filipino connection. That s one of the most special things. When you play sport, it s almost always for your dad, Letts said. We have the opportunity to represent our mother s country. All us players, we took it with both hands and we ve never been more proud. The Philippines beat Malaysia 24-7 in the final at Choa Chu Kang Stadium, quite a distance from the Singapore Sports Hub that is hosting most of the SEA Games sports. There s some rugby tradition in Singapore, so the grandstand was full. I think our story is the most special, Letts said, talking about the squad which gathers from all over the world, including the four players with professional contracts in Japan. We call ourselves a brotherhood because that s what it really is. We all had the same upbringing. All our mothers raised us the Filipino way. We have very similar stories. Patrice Olivier is quite distinctive within the team. He s the tallest, he plays as a professional and he speaks with a distinct French accent when he describes how proud he is to a win a gold medal. I m French Filipino (others are) half Welsh, half Aussie, half USA, he said. It s such a mix when we bring the band together. It s just beautiful. We have a very strong link. Preparing the squad has its challenges for coach Geoff Alley, who splits his time between national team duties and living in Auckland, New Zealand. For the SEA Games, he had the squad together for 10 days. His main task for is to try to get the team into the Olympics via a regional qualifying tournament in Hong Kong in November. With this team, we could give Japan and Hong Kong a good crack, he said. As long as we keep this group together, keep hammering the patterns, we should be fine. Gomez is a commissioner of the Philippines Sports Commission, which puts a big emphasis on development. Overseas-born players have been recruited for other sports, most notably in soccer. In the development plan we ve had for rugby, the first thing was to bring in some Philippines-heritage athletes, Gomez said. One of the things I told the athletes is, You have to rediscover your country. I told all these kids, Has your mother ever forced you to perform in front of your relatives? If the answer is yes, then you are a Filipino. He said it was important to recruit players to develop the game at the local, grassroots level, because you need heroes. So, maybe today you have guys like this, but in a couple more SEA Games and maybe the Olympics, you re going to see a homegrown strong lineup mixed with people like what we have right here, Gomez said. Trevor Gregory, the Hong Kong-based president of Asia Rugby, applauds the Philippines approach, saying the interest and standard of sevens rugby across the continent has grown quickly in the last three years and for sure, winning a medal at a SEA Games is a massive boost. It s impressive to see the way the Philippines is playing, Gregory said. It shouldn t be discouraged. Pacific Games Continued from page B9 PNG at the end of this month. Obama addresses scandal Continued from page B9 OBAMA WEIGHS IN: The Women s World Cup is being played as FIFA deals with a scandal which U.S. prosecutors allege involves more than $150 million in bribes. FIFA President Sepp Blatter, who is not at the tournament, announced last week that he plans to resign. President Barack Obama addressed the scandal Monday at the G7 Summit in Germany. He could not comment on the specifics of the ongoing investigation, but did say that as the investigation and charges proceed, I think we have to keep in mind that although football soccer, depending on which side of the Atlantic you live on is a game, it s also a massive business, it is a source of incredible national pride and people want to make sure that it operates with integrity. The United States, by the way, since we keep on getting better and better at each World Cup, we want to make sure that a sport that s gaining popularity is conducted in an upright manner. NIKE SPOT: Nike is not a sponsor of the World Cup, but they are a sponsor of the United States team. So while Nike can t officially say the words World Cup in any of their advertising, the Beaverton, Oregon-based company is still going hard for the American women. Case in point is a new ad, appropriately enough called American Woman which debuted on YouTube on Monday, featuring Alex Morgan, Abby Wambach and other U.S. players. MONDAY RECAP: In other matches Monday, Cameroon defeated Ecuador 6-0 and defending World Cup champion Japan beat Switzerland 1-0 in Vancouver, British Columbia, to kick off Group C play. LOOKING AHEAD: There are four group-stage matches on Tuesday: France plays England before Colombia meets Mexico to open Group F play in Moncton, New Brunswick. In Montreal, Group E gets underway with Spain facing Costa Rica before Brazil plays South Korea.
11 samoa news, Tuesday, June 9, Page B11 Short & Sweet 3 shortstops lead off draft for first time SECAUCUS, N.J. (AP) Shortstops were a big hit leading off the Major League Baseball draft. The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Vanderbilt slugger Dansby Swanson with the No. 1 pick Monday night, setting off a history-making run at the position. With the second pick, Houston took LSU s Alex Bregman marking the first time since 1982 the first two players chosen were shortstops. That year it was Shawon Dunston (Cubs) and Augie Schmidt (Blue Jays). And for the first time, Colorado made it 3 for 3 by taking Florida high schooler Brendan Rodgers at No. 3 overall. A fourth shortstop went 10th, with Philadelphia selecting Georgia high schooler Cornelius Randolph. A record-tying eight shortstops were selected in the first round (36 picks), matching the number that were taken in 1971 and Swanson, who helped lead the Commodores to the College World Series earlier in the day, was the first college shortstop to be the top pick since Bill Almon from Brown University in I think it sounds pretty good, a smiling Swanson said in an interview on MLB Network. It marked the first time the Diamondbacks had the No. 1 selection since they drafted Justin Upton in Swanson seamlessly switched from second base to shortstop this season as a junior. He was the Most Outstanding Player at the College World Series last year, helping the Commodores to the national championship. Swanson is a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award and Howser Trophy, given to college baseball s top player. An exceptional baseball player that has all of the intangibles and makeup of a championship-type player for which this organization is building a foundation on, Diamondbacks scouting director Deric Ladnier said in a statement. Two of Swanson s teammates at Vanderbilt were also firstrounders, with righty Carson Fulmer going eighth to the Chicago White Sox and Walker Buehler, also a right-hander, No. 24 to the Dodgers. The trio made the Commodores the fifth college program to have three players chosen in the opening round. It was the 50th anniversary of the first draft in 1965, and the first for new Commissioner Rob Manfred, who took over when Bud Selig retired in January. I actually was going to call him on the way out here and I got tied up, Manfred said, minutes before stepping to the podium to begin announcing the first-round selections. So I didn t get any advice. I think I can get through it. The Astros received the No. 2 pick as compensation for not signing pitcher Brady Aiken, last year s top pick. Aiken was taken by Cleveland at No. 17 despite having Tommy John surgery in March. Bregman is the offensive leader of an LSU team that will play in the College World Series and has been ranked No. 1 in the country in several polls for most of the season. The Golden Spikes Award finalist is hitting.312 with nine homers and 49 RBIs, and has stolen 37 bases. It s such an honor, Bregman said. I can t wait to get to work right after we go win the College World Series. Houston kept things in the family at No. 5, taking Florida high school outfielder Kyle Tucker, the younger brother of Astros outfielder Preston Tucker. He broke his brother s school record with 31 career homers. I ve never had the opportunity to play with him since he s 7 years older, Kyle Tucker said. I ve sat in the stands and watched him. Possibly having the opportunity to play with him at the major league level, that would be something really special for me. With the first pick of the second round, the Astros went for another player with baseball bloodlines by taking Georgia high school outfielder Daz Cameron, son of former All-Star Mike Cameron. California high school third baseman Tyler Nevin, the son of 1992 No. 1 overall pick Phil Nevin, went next to Colorado. Texas high school third baseman Ke Bryan Hayes, son of former big leaguer Charlie Hayes, went 32nd overall to Pittsburgh. Rodgers was the first of four players in attendance to have his name called by Manfred, shaking hands with the commissioner while slipping on a Rockies cap and jersey. I really have no words right now, Rodgers said. I m in awe right now. This is a dream come true. Rodgers, from Lake Mary High School, was widely regarded as the best prep player in the draft. He has power to all fields, soft hands and good range at shortstop. Rodgers said he had 22 friends and family members at the draft, nearly all from Florida, and a roar went up when his name was announced. Everyone s here, he said. They re still in shock over there. So am I. The other three prospects in attendance also got selected in the first round: New York high school outfielder Garrett Whitley went 13th to Tampa Bay; Indiana high school righty Ashe Russell was picked 21st by Kansas City; and Pennsylvania high school righthander Mike Nikorak was the No. 27 selection by Colorado. Hawaii County police were investigating what appeared to be a bullet hole in a Subaru Telescope door. But on Monday, the observatory said in a statement the hole was caused by strong wind swinging a metal door into an instrument fixture attached to a wall. We at Subaru Telescope are relieved that this is the case and regret the confusion caused by earlier reports, the statement said. A detective investigated Monday and determined the hole from the bolt on the wall was there about six months, police said. The observatory s statement says the day crews knew about the hole from a severe winter storm earlier this year. The observatory didn t immediately explain why someone reported it to police Saturday night. The parachute appeared to disintegrate in a video of the test. The test off the Hawaiian island of Kauai was investigating technology designed to slow down a large landing vehicle falling through the atmosphere at supersonic speeds. Dated/Aso: May 22, Clerk ofcourts Jury selection starts in trial of toddler s beating death HILO, Hawaii (AP) The first of two trials starts with jury selection Monday for a man charged with beating a toddler to death and strangling the child s mother almost nine months later. Police arrested 40-year-old Xavier Cortez Jr. in January 2011 on a first-degree assault charge when his girlfriend s 18-month-old daughter was admitted to the hospital with breathing problems, The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported.. She died a week later at The Queen s Medical Center in Honolulu. Deputy Prosecutor Joseph Lee says Cortez killed 20-year-old Sommer Ferreira in September 2011 because she said she d testify against Cortez. Hilo Circuit Judge Glenn Hara allowed statements Cortez made shortly after the death to be admitted. Police Detective Robert Almeida said Cortez told him he was worried about Ferreira s mental condition. He was in the bedroom of the apartment he shared with her when he looked out the window and saw her leg hanging from the staircase. Almeida says Cortez told him he found her hanging by a sports bra from stair piping. Cortez said the landlady helped him take her into the bedroom and perform CPR. Defense attorney Stanton Oshiro said during cross-examination of Almeida that a bungee cord at the scene could have made the marks found on Ferreira s neck. Cortez goes on trial for Ferreira s death Aug. 11. Kapaia site offered for youth drug treatment center LIHUE, Hawaii (AP) Grove Farm has agreed to donate five acres of land so that Kauai County can start building a youth substance abuse treatment center. The Garden Island reports Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. said Wednesday that the project is a top priority for the county. The site offered by Grove Farm is located in the rural area of Kapaia. Several other potential sites have been selected over the years, but the project never moved beyond planning stages. The proposal calls for construction of a 10-bed facility capable of offering acute in-patient care. The proposed facility would also offer outpatient and aftercare treatment programs. MEET COMMENTS ABOUT BIRACIAL CHILD WITH HUMOR AND PRIDE DEAR ABBY: May I comment on the letter from Open-Minded in Pennsylvania (3/6), the adoptive mother of a biracial child who asked for a witty comeback for strangers comments/questions? This is a rare teaching moment! If a parent reacts with the slightest hint of displeasure, the child will think the parent is displeased with her/him. We adopted a daughter of a different race 29 years ago. When I received comments/questions from acquaintances and strangers, my face would light up, and I d respond, Oh, we adopted her! She is Filipino! We are so blessed to have her in our lives! Usually, the person would smile and say something positive. The rare times someone didn t, we would hurry on with a wave and a smile, and I would hug her close. Our daughter has grown up proud of her ethnic background and knowing she s special. She is now married and the proud mother of two biracial children. -- JUDY IN TEXAS DEAR JUDY: You handled the situation beautifully. I heard from a slew of adoptive parents after printing that letter. Let me share some of their comments: DEAR ABBY: Thirty years ago, we adopted two baby girls of a different race from ours. Our adoption social worker gave us some insightful advice about what to do when someone made a bigoted or ignorant remark. She said: Always remember your child is watching you to see how she is supposed to feel about what has just happened. If you become upset and defensive, your children will feel that way too and begin to believe something is wrong about them and Dear Abby by Abigail Van Buren your family. So take the role of teacher and educate the ignorant person. Keep it light, add humor if you can, and then chuckle later with your child and other family members about the silly dumbness of a few people in the world. It worked for us. -- ANTONIA, MOTHER OF TWO DEAR ABBY: When my adopted son from Bogota, Colombia, was about 4 months old, we were shopping for groceries one day. A woman approached our cart and asked, Where is he from? I smiled and replied, Heaven! -- KATHY IN NEW YORK DEAR ABBY: I employ a strategy I learned from your column. I face the questioner with a smile and say, I am stunned that you would ask such a personal thing! The look on the asker s face is priceless. And it makes it quite clear that I have no obligation to respond to anything someone may choose to ask. To that mother: Hold your head high, radiate pride in your precious child, and know all s right in your world. -- PAT IN THE NORTHWEST DEAR ABBY: I have a wonderful grandchild of mixed race. When I m asked insensitive questions like, What is he? I smile, hold him close, and respond, He s PERFECT -- don t you think? -- PROUD GRAN IN SOUTH CAROLINA Dear Abby is written by Abigail Van Buren, also known as Jeanne Phillips, and was founded by her mother, Pauline Phillips. 16 Page B16 samoa news, Tuesday, June 9, Dig Into READING Utulei Village (a French folktale) adapted by Amy Friedman and illustrated by Meredith Johnson Once upon a time, Henri, a poor farmer, was carrying his wares to market. He was grumbling as he walked, for he was tired of his misfortunes. As he happened past a beggar, the man called out, I hear you complain, but what makes you so unhappy? Henri stopped and looked at the strange man in tattered clothes. My wife and I are almost starving, he said. I work day and night, and I pray, but the good Lord must be too high up to hear my prayers. The beggar stood, reached into his pocket and pulled out a bean. Take this, he said. Plant it in your fields, and I promise you it will grow tall enough to carry you to heaven. He slipped the bean into Henri s hand. Henri was just about to laugh, when to his astonishment, the beggar vanished. What could he do? Naturally, when Henri returned home, he planted the bean, just as the beggar had told him. And to his amazement, the moment it was in the ground, it grew to be a shoot -- 1 inch high. Impossible, Henri muttered to himself, and he did not dare dream. The next morning when he walked outside, he saw the plant had grown 10 feet high. By the next morning, it was even higher. By the third morning, he could no longer see the top. He began to think about that old beggar s words. Well, it can t hurt to try to climb, Henri said, and so he began to climb, using the stems that were as thick as tree branches as steps. Up and up he climbed. Henri climbed for several hours until at last he reached a field thick with flowers -- the scent of lilies, lilacs, gardenias, magnolias and jasmine filled his lungs. In the center of the field of flowers he saw a path, and so he climbed down from the stalk and followed the path. He walked for an hour until at last he came to a magnificent mansion. He understood that this must be the home of the Lord. Henri knocked on the door, and a man in magnificent robes appeared. Oh my! What are you doing here, Henri? he asked. I have come to speak to you, Lord, Henri said quietly. I have prayed for a house on a hill and a little bit of savings to help me through the hard times, but you have never answered my prayers. That s all? the man in robes asked. Very well, your wish is granted. Go back home and see. Henri hurried back down the path to his stalk, and he climbed down as quickly as he could back to Earth. There he found his wife, Colette, happier than he had ever seen her, dancing and rejoicing before a pretty little house on a hill. I found a sack of gold on the table inside and four chickens in the yard, she told Henri. He smiled, grateful that at long last his prayers had been answered. For the next few days, life was perfectly happy at home. But on the seventh morning, Colette woke up and said, I d like a bigger house. Wouldn t you? Climb the beanstalk and ask for one. Henri was hesitant, but Colette insisted, so he climbed back up to the mansion in heaven. When the man in robes answered his knock, Henri said, Pardon, my Lord, but my wife was wondering if we might have a bigger house and perhaps a bit more of a fortune? And a few servants? If that is your wish, you shall have it, said the Lord. Now go back home. Once again, Henri hurried home, and this time he was amazed to see a castle guarded by servants and his wife dressed in silk, with diamonds glittering on her fingers. This is all very well, Colette said, but honestly, I would like to be a queen, Henri. Please go ask the Lord for that. Henri shook his head. I couldn t ask for such a thing, he protested, but Colette would not stop asking him. So at long last, he climbed the stalk once more and went to see the Lord. Colette wishes to be a queen, Henri practically whispered. What? the Lord asked, surprised and slightly irritated. Still, he granted Henri s request. When Henri returned home, he saw his wife surrounded by a sea of guards and a crown upon her head. A line of foreign ministers stood outside the castle walls, waiting for a visit with the queen. Are you happy now? Henri asked his wife, now the queen. TELL ME A STORY: HENRI S BEANSTALK No, I think I d rather be the Lord, Colette said. Please climb the beanstalk again. Henri was mortified, but she kept asking him until he could do nothing but agree to her request. This time when he appeared before the Lord, he looked down at his feet and said, Colette asks to be the Lord. When the Lord heard this, he exploded. You are mad! he said, and a moment later Henri was hurtling through the air, falling to Earth. He landed on the hill where once his house and castle had stood. Now there was only his old hut and Colette in her tattered clothes. What happened, Henri? she asked, and just at that moment, a bolt of lightning struck and knocked the beanstalk to the ground. And with that, Henri and Colette were left with what little they d had in the beginning. C Y C Y M K M K
