2 About the Symposium Background: The First Annual Global Health Symposium focused on Building on the Power of Partnerships and brought together over 160 participants working internationally and locally to contribute to health system strengthening initiatives. The Second Annual Symposium is organized by Henry Ford Health System, Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine/Beaumont Health System, Southeast Michigan Center for Medical Education, and Wayne State University School of Medicine. Purpose: This year s symposium will focus on best practices for improving health for underserved populations through sustainable programs, interventions, and innovations. Prominent international, national, and local experts will share their knowledge and experiences with symposium participants. The morning session highlights the nuts and bolts of establishing sustainable training and research programs whereas the afternoon examines innovative work that rethinks sustainability. Following the success of last year s inaugural symposium, participants will again play an integral part in the exchange of information through poster and slide presentations, interactive panel discussions, and networking opportunities. The Call for Abstracts will be open until July 31,. The slide and poster presentations will be an integral part of the program agenda and will contribute to the knowledge shared between southeast Michigan academic institutions, hospitals, and other organizations. In addition, authors will have their work published in the Global Health Symposium Program Book. Complete information on submission of abstracts can be found on page 7 of this brochure. Target Audience The second annual symposium is aimed at students, faculty, medical professionals, and administrators wishing to contribute to the improvement in the health and lives of the underserved at home and abroad. 7 Call for Abstracts The Host Committee of the Global Health Symposium: Sustainable Solutions to Improve the Health and Lives of the Underserved at Home and Abroad is inviting research and programmatic abstract submissions from any discipline, in any stage of development, including proposed research or programs. The abstracts should focus on best practices for improving health for underserved populations, both globally and locally, through sustainable programs, interventions, and innovations. This is a great opportunity to share your work with peers and to network with other global health advocates in Southeastern Michigan. 8 Faculty & Moderators GEOFFREY ANGUYO, MD (Speaker) is the founder and executive director of Kigezi Healthcare Foundation (KIHEFO) since He graduated with his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda in Since then he has completed post-graduates at University of Witwatersrand in South Africa on infectious diseases majoring in HIV management, and at Uganda Management Institute in project planning and management, majoring in sustainable development. He is a visiting lecturer at several universities in the United States and Canada including University of Toronto, McGill University, Stanford University, University of California Los Angeles, and more. He is a member of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) research group. Dr. Anguyo is also a faculty member and supervisor of student community placement at Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Uganda. ELLIOTT ATTISHA, DO, FAAP (Speaker) completed his pediatric residency at Children s Hospital of Michigan in 2001 and then worked as a pediatrician in Suburban Detroit for 9 years. In September 2010, he joined Henry Ford Health System s School-Based and Community Health Program (SBCHP). The program operates 7 School-Based Health Centers (SBHC), each of which plays an integral role in alleviating barriers to health care for Detroit s children. Soon after, he was invited to become the medical director of a newly acquired pediatric mobile clinic, which complements Henry Ford s SBCHs, bringing pediatric services to additional underserved Detroit schools. A second mobile clinic was added in October Dr. Attisha currently also serves as associate medical director for the SBCHP. Some of his additional roles include Executive Committee member on AAP s Council on School Health and Board Chair for the School Community Health Alliance of Michigan. Dr. Attisha has a large interest in asthma and completed an asthma champion training course in hopes of addressing some of the current disparities. CHIH CHUANG, MD, FAAP (Moderator, Host Committee) is a graduate of Wayne State University School of Medicine, Class of He completed a combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics and served as Chief Resident of his program. He went on to complete a fellowship in Palliative Care Medicine and Hospice. Dr. Chuang is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Academic and Student Programs at the School of Medicine and is Director of Global Health and Education. In addition, he is faculty advisor for World Health Student Organization, which organizes medical relief trips to Central and South America during various times throughout the year. Dr. Chuang has been involved in international relief work for over 10 years and is currently looking to improve the program processes as well as development of a global health curriculum at the School of Medicine. LYNETTE ANTOINE DEVEAUX, B.A. (Speaker) is the Coordinator of the Focus on Youth HIV Prevention and Research Program, Office of the HIV and AIDS Centre in the Bahamian Ministry of Health. She is also a member of the Executive Management Team of the National HIV & AIDS Programme and the AIDS Foundation Outreach Committee. Mrs. Deveaux received training in The Bahamas, the USA and Canada in Educational Psychology. She has conducted HIV prevention, intervention and implementation research within the school-setting for over 12 years in The Bahamas. Mrs. Deveaux hosts a local radio show called HIV & AIDS What Now, which is broadcast nationally throughout the islands of The Bahamas, Turks and Caicos. Her research interests include risk reduction among adolescents and young adults, HIV/AIDS and teenpregnancy prevention, tools to empower parents as well as public health awareness. She is the vice president of St. Matthew s Anglican Church Women and a mother of two. 8
9 Faculty & Moderators continued JESSICA EVERT, MD (Speaker) is a Family Physician who straddles international education, global health ethics, clinical service, and academics. She is Executive Director of Child Family Health International (CFHI) a UN-affiliated non-profit organization with over 25 Global Health Education Programs for undergraduate and graduate students. Dr. Evert is widely published in global health educational program development, ethics, and practices toward health equity. Dr. Evert is Faculty at the University of California, San Francisco Department of Family and Community Medicine, where she instructs in Global Health and communitybased underserved care and helped develop, and completed, the Global Health Clinical Scholars residency track. Dr. Evert serves as liaison to trainees for the Consortium of Universities in Global Health, and is on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Family Physicians Center for Global Health Initiatives. Dr. Evert is a recipient of Global Health Education Consortium s prestigious Christopher Krogh Award for her dedication to underserved populations at home and abroad. ADNAN HAMMAD, PHD (Moderator) is Chief Executive Officer of the National Arab American Medical Association. He is a strong advocate for community-based health research and capacity building for minority groups including Arab Americans. Dr. Hammad was previously founder and Senior Director of ACCESS Community Health and Research Center. His leadership roles include the American Cancer Society Board and the Advisory Committee on Health Research of the World Health Organization. With over 150 research publications pertinent to Arab American health, Dr. Hammad focuses on diabetes, tobacco and Argyle use, cancer, and refugees mental health. He currently serves as adjunct Professor at Wayne State University School of Medicine and Michigan State University. He holds a Master s in Health Sciences from Aston University, a Master s in Health Economics and a doctorate in Public Health Policy and Administration from Victoria University of Manchester. His international recognitions include Managing Director of Makassed Hospital, Jerusalem, and Health Consultant for the Harvard Institute of International Development in the Middle East. PATRICIA GARCIA, MD, MPH, PHD (Speaker) is the Dean of the School of Public Health and Administration at Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) in Lima, Peru, where she was previously Director of the Epidemiology, STD/HIV Unit and Vice Dean of Research. Dr. Garcia graduated from medical school in Peru, and trained in internal medicine, infectious diseases, and public health at the University of Washington. She is former Chief of the Peruvian National Institute of Health, has worked at the Peruvian National STD/AIDS Program and has been a member of the Commission for the Education of Health Professionals of the New Century. Now she is the Latin America Regional Director of the International Union Against STI, and Affiliate Professor at University of Washington and Tulane University. Dr. Garcia is actively involved in research and training on STI/HIV, maternal health, global health and biomedical informatics, and implementation research related to point of care diagnostics. One of Dr. Garcia s key projects is KUSKAYA, an interdisciplinary training program for innovation in global health. RICHARD D. KEIDAN, MD (Moderator, Host Committee) is currently a surgical oncologist at Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital and an associate professor of surgery at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine since He graduated from the University of Michigan Undergraduate and Medical Schools, and was a fellow and attending at Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia from He is founder and director of D2N:Detroit2Nepal Foundation, providing public health, health care, and educational opportunities for underserved children both in Detroit and Nepal. He spends up to 3 months each year in Nepal, working at the grass roots levels in marginalized villages in the Himalayas. These villages are days walk from the nearest road, without power or waste management, and very little access to health care and educational opportunities. Priorities are identified by the local communities and all projects are carried out by local partner NGO s, with emphasis on the local s vestment, empowerment, and ownership of each project. 9
10 Faculty & Moderators continued ANNE SALES, PHD, RN (Moderator) is a Professor in the Department of Learning Health Sciences, School of Medicine, University of Michigan, and Research Scientist at the Center for Clinical Management Research at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. Her training is in sociology, health economics, econometrics, and general health services research. Her current work involves understanding the way feedback reports affect provider behavior and through behavior change have an impact on patient outcomes, and the role of social networks in uptake of knowledge translation interventions. She has is co-editor-in-chief of Implementation Science, together with Michel Wensing of Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. RENATE SCHNEIDER, MA (Speaker) has spent the last 15 years living and working in Haiti. She worked initially in a small rural community in Haiti where she served for over two years as the Director of the University of Fondwa. She then moved on to Jeremie, Haiti, where she served as the Director of the Center of Hope, a maternal waiting home for women with high risk pregnancies. Ms. Schneider holds an MA degree in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in cross-cultural psychology as well as an MA in Pastoral Studies. She founded the University of the Nouvelle Grand Anse which in August of 2014 graduated its first class of students. While in Jeremie she initiated Pwogwam Sante Mantal which trained 20 community people as mental health agents, and has reached over 3,000 people in providing mental health literacy. HERBERT C. SMITHERMAN JR., MD, MPH, FACP (Speaker) is Assistant Dean of Community and Urban Health and Associate Professor of Medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine. He is also President and CEO of Health Centers Detroit Foundation, the first Federally Qualified Health Center Look-Alike designated in Detroit, serving the underserved and uninsured in Detroit and Wayne County for the past 29 years. His research focuses on health issues related to underserved populations and their access to appropriate healthcare in the context of U.S. healthcare reform. Dr. Smitherman received his bachelor s of science in chemical engineering with a minor in biomedical engineering from Northwestern University. He completed his medical degree at the University of Cincinnati, his Master s in Health Services Administration at the University of Michigan, and completed special coursework in international and healthcare economics at Amherst College and Harvard University. As an International Salzburg Healthcare Fellow, he participated in the 2002 Salzburg Seminar. Dr. Smitherman co-authored a healthcare policy book: Taking Care of The Uninsured: A Path to Reform. KATHLEEN WEST, MPH, DRPH (Speaker) is a public health professional with expertise working with programs serving at-risk families, maternal and child health and welfare, intergenerational trauma and public mental health and addiction issues. Dr. West s education includes degrees in biology and anthropology from Kalamazoo College, and masters and doctoral degrees from the UCLA School of Public Health. Based in Los Angeles and Geneva throughout her career, Dr. West has worked with substance abuse and mental health issues in the context of families in the judicial system for thirty years and now focuses on collaborative courts expansion. Following a UNHCR contract in Kuwait, her interests turned to work with global military and veteran family and children issues to better address PTSD sequelae and epigenetics. She currently teaches classes on disaster, conflict and global health at the USC Department of Preventive Medicine, military families at the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs, and works with maternal and child health systems in Africa, specifically focusing on Sierra Leone where she studied and has worked since
