Joint innovation in the energy industry 1
2 Contents Let s join forces Ongoing joint industry projects Take advantage Projects about to be launched Let s get started Projects in the pipeline DNV is a global provider of services for managing risk, helping customers to safely and responsibly improve their business performance. DNV is an independent foundation with presence in more than 100 countries.
3 Let s join forces. At DNV, we work continuously to improve technologies, methodologies and solutions related to the energy sector. Close collaboration with the industry has been key to the results we have produced. This is our simple idea: If we combine our own development resources with those of the industry, we can achieve so much more. Now we invite partners to join us in the pursuit of new achievements. We are also proud to present the results of our ongoing efforts.
4 Large sums are being invested in specific technologies within wave and tidal energy industry. Due to the large variation in the nature of devices, it is important to have an equitable system of testing and evaluation of performance, cost and environmental impact, which is the main objective of the EquiMar EU Joint Industry Project. Pre-commissioning activities are mandatory for most pipelines. This has created many discussions and disputes that have resulted in high costs and schedule delays. The JIP will prepare a project specific Guideline on Pre- Commissioning of Pipelines, later to be converted to a DNV Recommended Practice. The growing demand for energy implies a constant need for innovation. Through our involvement with the energy industry, DNV has always been engaged in developing new technologies, methodologies and services. The range of projects currently in progress demonstrates the depth and scope of our initiatives. DNV has always focused on renewing our knowledge and setting new standards. We issued our first principles for offshore drilling platforms in 1970, and have since issued a large number of new and revised codes. Most of the work is done through joint industry projects. A number of exciting ongoing projects are helping the industry safely and responsibly improve their business performance. The projects focus on the following segments: n Deep and ultra-deepwater field development n Offshore installations n Offshore and onshore pipelines n Natural gas/lng n Refining and petrochemicals n Power generation and transmission n Carbon capture and storage n Wind, wave and tidal energy n Arctic operations and technology n Ageing offshore structures n LNG and other special ships The efforts are executed worldwide and coordinated through DNV s leadership team. A selection of current projects is listed on the following pages, illustrating the depth and extent of our initiations. They are based on ideas from creative individuals in our worldwide organisation generated from interaction with key customers. We are excited about our ongoing projects and look forward to continue working with the industry to lead the way. Join us in setting new standards for the energy sector. Let s go first.

Take advantage. 9 At DNV, we invest heavily to ensure that the results of our development projects can be effectively applied in the industry. As a partner you will have first-hand access to the output of these efforts, providing you with a competitive edge and enabling you to safely and responsibly improve your performance.
10 The DNV-OS-C501 Concrete LNG terminal structures and containment systems was developed in 2004, during a period with much interest in offshore LNG terminal developments across the world. The standard now requires an update to reflect the latest technology developments and newly gained experience. Enterprise risk management is one of our focused service lines. A draft DNV RP covering integrity management was developed a few years ago. Since then, a significant amount of experience has been accumulated, and the RP is being revised and issued formally. The sharing of knowledge is a key driver of progress. Making new methodologies and knowledge available to the industry is therefore an important part of DNV s mission. We do this by launching new services, and we do it by codifying the knowledge in the form of new standards and recommended practices. In close cooperation with the energy industry we will continue to improve industry standards also in A selection of new services and codes to be released is presented on the next pages. The DNV offshore rules incorporate knowledge and experience acquired over time, providing a consistent set of standards designed to ensure fail safe design and redundancy. The rules and supporting documents are subject to regular updating to reflect operational experience and advances in technology. The documents consist of a 3-level hierarchy: n Service Specifications (OSS) provide principles and procedures of DNV classification, certification, verification and consultancy services. n Standards (OS) provide technical provisions and acceptance criteria for general use by the energy industry as well as the technical basis for DNV offshore services. n Recommended Practices (RP) provide technology basis and industry best practice and recommendations. The rules and recommended practises cover a wide range of areas from energy efficiency and risk assessment of CO2 storage sites to extended specification for verification of lifting appliances and recommendation on how to perform structural analyses accurately to assess ageing platforms. We are eager to see this output applied in real projects and look forward to continue working with the industry to lead the way. Take advantage by making use of the new services, tools and methods for your next project.
