4 Painting the world s data centers green As environmental pressures and energy costs increase, more and more data center managers feel the pressure to embrace green practices. Cofely resolutely chooses for energy efficiency in data center design. Going green, however, requires an end-to-end understanding and holistic view of the data center. Drawing on many years experience with turnkey data center projects, facility management and maintenance, our engineers have the required know-how to sharply reduce data center energy consumption and transform our clients data centers into truly green data centers. Energy-efficiency is the starting point when designing a brand-new data center. In existing data centers, we are continuously looking for opportunities to cut energy consumption. The use of highly-effective UPS-systems, free cooling and frequency-driven pumps and fans comes as standard in every Cofely best practise. Other measures to reduce the energy use include: > installing cooling systems with a very high COP value, freechilling and freecooling. > general structure of rooms with hot passages and cold aisles > hvac: free chilling, temperature of the room, variable frequency-driven pumps and fans, heat recovery, etc. > electricity: efficient UPS systems, rotating UPS fly wheel, cabling, patching, etc. > operating & reporting: management focused on energy > innovative options for local energy production (such as solar panels, windmills, etc.) Design Energy Efficiency To measure is to know As from the design of every data center project, Cofely calculates the client s PUE* (Power Usage Effectiveness) and EUE. It is our ambition to optimise the PUE as much as possible.
