Rittal IT Solutions The State of the Data Center Market The Market The Challenges The Space The Questions The Installation The Wrap Up
So First Some Bad News The Cloud Factories Power, Pollution and the Internet A yearlong examination by The New York Times has revealed that this foundation of the information industry is sharply at odds with its image of sleek efficiency and environmental friendliness. Most data centers, by design, consume vast amounts of energy in an incongruously wasteful manner, interviews and documents show. Online companies typically run their facilities at maximum capacity around the clock, whatever the demand. As a result, data centers can waste 90 percent or more of the electricity they pull off the grid, The Times found. Worldwide, the digital warehouses use about 30 billion watts of electricity, roughly equivalent to the output of 30 nuclear power plants, according to estimates industry experts compiled for The Times. Data centers in the United States account for one-quarter to one-third of that load, the estimates show. SOURCE:
And Even On The Net Are Data Centers the New Global Landfill? By Ron Bianchini :52 PM According to Emerson Network Power, there are 509,147 data centers worldwide with million square feet of space. In more familiar terms, there s enough data center space in the world to fit 5,955 football fields, or landfills, with landfills being a more appropriate analogy in this case. Here are a few more stats that paint the current picture: Nationwide, in 2010 alone, data centers used about 76 billion kilowatt-hours, or roughly 2 percent of all electricity used in the US that year. It s worth noting that all of that energy is mostly used to power idle servers. Gartner found that typical data center utilizations ran from 7 12 percent. Meaning, about 76 billion kilowatt-hours is powering only 7-12% of useful information. Considering those numbers, clearly an environmental concern is on the rise much bigger than what we ve thought and ever had in the past. SOURCE: tories%29&utm_content=google+feedfetcher
Yet - Market Potential A study by Christian Belady of Microsoft projects global data center construction will reach $78 billion a year by 2020.

Demands Placed on IT Managers Complexity Flexibility Costs Security Early fire detection Fire extinguishing Increasing planning needs Physical security IT infrastructures Simplified certification Climate efficiency Data centre infrastructure management IT load over course of the day Economic efficiency Expandability, scalability Expansion for efficiency measurement Secure, reliable operation Transparent and consistent IT management 7
Demands Placed on IT Managers Complexity Flexibility Costs Security How can I ensure the availability of my IT services? How can I manage the constantly increasing complexity? Which concrete measures can I take to combat increasing costs? How can I react flexibly to the changing demands of internal and external customers? 8

Or Even The Lego Data Center Lego Data Center Image Source: Eduardotanaka
And Then There s THE CLOUD 14
With CLOUD Used Two Ways To refer to all data centers, external networking, and network storage that deliver computing services to users over the Internet To describe a method for delivering computing services known as cloud computing, that is distinct from in-house IT (this is the definition I mainly use) Source: Dr. Jonathan Koomey, Stanford Univ. 15
So, Let s Build a Data Center The Original Three Questions: Where is it going? What s going in it? How much is going in?
And New Questions Know what you are looking for and what is most important Who Are You How Critical Is The Space How Many Spaces What Is The Application Redundancy & Resiliency Green Field or Existing Space How Efficient Will You Be Pain Threshold
Who Are You The End User Cloud Provider Enterprise Internet Hosting Research/Education Healthcare Government Telco
What Do You Want The Design Standalone Data Center or Multi-use Building The Application Enterprise, Hosting, Research, etc. Green Field or Renovation Modular or Containerized Footprint/Row or Aisle Containment Available or Planned Site Infrastructure Raised or Slab Floor Climate Zone Seismic Zone Tier/Class Rating
By Redundancy Redundancy = Component Availability The duplication of critical components or functions of a system with the intention of increasing reliability of the system, usually in the case of a backup or fail-safe. N = Base System N+1 = Parallel Redundant 2N/2N+1 = Complete Redundancy
By Resiliency Resiliency = System Availability

Some Of The Numbers PUE Power Usage Effectiveness = Total Facility Power IT Equipment Power Total power delivered to a site divided by the IT equipment power. The total power is the sum of mechanical, electrical, and other systems. PUE captures the efficiency of all components from input power, through UPS and to the RPP level ERE - Energy Reuse Effectiveness A metric to provide an end user with a method to measure overall energy efficiency as it relates to use of recovered energy from the data center WUE Water Usage Effectiveness Metric to provide an end user to assess environmental impacts of data center water usage DCE Data Center Efficiency = IT Equipment Power Total Facility Power The inverse of PUE and another way to look at power and cooling efficiency of the IT equipment compared to the power coming in to the site. Here, a lower number is better. 1 Also DCiE Data Center Infrastructure Efficiency = PUE Supported by the Green Grid and Similar to DCE
