District Energy is widely recognised as a sustainable, cost-effective solution to the provision of heating, cooling and power and scores highly in environmental assessment schemes such as BREEAM and LEED. It also facilitates compliance with Building Regulations Part L requirements. Increased use of District Energy combined with CHP is a cornerstone of the Government s strategy for reducing carbon emissions. At the heart of every District Energy scheme is an Energy Centre or several inter-connected Energy Centres that typically serve a number of buildings, which could range from an office block to a civic building, or to an entire city, through a network of underground pipes and cables. In most District Energy schemes the Energy Centre includes Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant to generate electricity and heat for heating and hot water. District Energy schemes also increase the opportunities for using other low and zero carbon (LZC) technologies such as fuel cells, biomass, solar thermal, heat pumps etc exploiting the economies of scale to increase the financial viability of such technologies. Where there is a cooling requirement in the summer, when space heating requirements are lower, the surplus heat from the CHP plant may be used to drive a high efficiency absorption chiller (Tri-generation). Surplus electrical power can be exported to the grid to generate additional revenue and subsidise the cost and improve the viability of the project. Heat, power and cooling can all be individually metered to separate buildings or zones for recharging purposes. 4 COFELY District Energy projects Southampton Southampton District Energy Scheme The Southampton District Energy Scheme is an award winning Trigeneration system saving over 11,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per annum. It utilises heat from a geothermal acquifer 1.7km below ground, supplemented by large scale CHP, biomass and conventional boilers. It also incorporates a district cooling system. Users include over 30 of the largest energy users in the City Centre including TV studios, a hospital, a university, a shopping centre, a civic centre, residential buildings and a hotel. 7.5MW of CHP plant 19.5MW of boiler capacity 14km of insulated distribution pipe Serves buildings within a 3km radius of the energy centre Just 0.5 C temperature loss per km of pipe Winner of Queens Award for Sustainability 2001 Birmingham District Energy Scheme Serving local authority buildings and commercial properties in the centre of Birmingham, the Broad Street District Energy Tri-generation Scheme is a total design, build, finance, own and operate scheme. The first phase encompassed a range of buildings in the central business district in 2007 served by an Energy Centre at the International Convention Centre (ICC). Further phases have incorporated Aston University in 2009 and Birmingham Children s Hospital in The scheme is also being extended into several regeneration areas across the city and, ultimately, all of these subschemes will be linked together to maximise energy saving opportunities. Birmingham 6.7MW of CHP plant 41MW of boilers 4.9MW chilled capacity Saves more than 12,000 tonnes of CO 2 emissions per annum Stratford, London Stratford City & Olympic Park Energy Centre Designed and constructed by COFELY, the Energy Centres will serve the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and other buildings with heat, power and cooling and continue to serve buildings in the area when the Games are complete. 5 Leicester Leicester District Energy Scheme A 25 year agreement with Leicester City Council (LCC) to develop a City wide district heating network, commencing initially with four separate schemes. The low carbon energy schemes which will be supplied with energy from a mix of gas fired CHP and biomass. They are due to go live during 2012, serving 3,000 dwellings across six housing estates, as well as 15 civic buildings. This first phase of the project also includes the University of Leicester and a second phase is being planned to connect to the Prison. GDF SUEZ Energy Services meets the long-term energy needs of businesses and public authorities thanks to technological know-how that emphasizes renewable energy such as biomass, geothermal energy, waste-to-energy and respect for the environment. Today, GDF SUEZ Energy Services teams design, build and operate district networks, the energy infrastructure of the future, and thus contribute to building the cities of the tomorrow. URBAN DESIGN Increasingly, GDF SUEZ operates upstream of urban development projects during the master plan phase. Looking for sustainable solutions and using a cross-functional perspective allows the Group to pool technological capabilities and reduce costs. The first step is to evaluate the context and analyse requirements in order to then design the channels that structure the space and define the networks. Based on the preliminary phase, all the parameters can be optimised simultaneously by coupling the various flows and connections between systems. The following are just a few examples of GDF SUEZ capabilities: The production of ice for cooling is provided by electrical refrigeration facilities, including refrigeration units, pumps, electrical transformers and pipes. Water from the river Seine is used to cool the refrigeration units and helps reduce the use of cooling towers in summer, resulting in significant energy savings. With the overall network performance being on average 50% higher than that of a traditional system. UNDERGROUND ENERGY FOR AN ECO-DISTRICT At Overhoeks in The Netherlands, a heating and cooling network linked to an underground energy storage system was designed and constructed by GDF SUEZ, and COFELY, which also delivers ongoing operation and maintenance. Storage wells 120m below ground preserve warmth for winter heating and cold for summer air conditioning, reducing energy consumption by 40% and saving around 2,900 tonnes of carbon per annum. SERVING URBAN DEVELOPMENT IN ZARAGOZA Serving the re-generated area of Ranillas, the district heating and cooling system will meet the energy needs of the areas users, whilst reducing over 20,000 metric tons of CO 2 emissions each year, compared to emissions produced by a traditional system. KEEPING PARIS COOL The GDF SUEZ owned Climaspace Paris district cooling system is one of the largest ice water cooling systems in the world. With six production plants, two storage facilities and a distribution network of 70km of underground tunnels and pipework, the system produces 410,000 MWh of energy a year.

7 FRANCE S FIRST ZERO CARBON URBAN NETWORK Serving over 1,000 homes and commercial units, the Limeil- Brevannes eco-district is fully supplied with renewable energy by combining biomass heating plant with solar thermal heating, heat pumps and solar power generation. The heating network was designed, financed and is managed by GDF SUEZ. SPAIN S FIRST URBAN NETWORK The Districlima scheme in Barcelona, was designed, constructed and maintained by GDF SUEZ. It was Spain s first urban heating and cooling district network. The scheme produces 76MW of heating and cooling capacity, and has a distribution network of 11km of grid pipework..
