1 BEST PRACTICE SOLUTIONS IN DENMARK CONFERENCE DISTRICT HEATING AND COOLING a main key to CO 2 reduction September 1 st - 2 nd 2009 At Hotel Pejsegården in Brædstrup, Denmark
2 DENMARK AS ONE OF THE LEADING DH COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD The world is facing two major global challenges: Responding to global heating and ensuring energy security. According to EuroHeat & Power s assessment of the European potential for district heating, more heat is wasted than used in Europe today. Around half of the energy amount is wasted in the energy transformation sector and only one fourth is used as heat. In a time with rising energy prices, a strong focus on energy dependency, environmental damage and climate change, other alternatives must be used. District heating and cooling systems can recycle heat surpluses from the existing energy system. The present avoided green house gas emissions (113 million tons CO 2 annually) by introducing combined heat and power production (CHP), can be further increased if district heating systems are improved. By expanding the use of district heating the CO 2 emissions can be curbed to the extent that they will correspond to a third of the EU goals for This conference will focus on the Danish Model. How the district heating sector has developed along with combined heat and power production and how these actions have resulted in large reductions in CO 2 -emissions. As a part of the conference a series of excursions have been arranged on the second day. The excursions are divided in terms of profession, and all of them provide examples of the Danish Model. TARGET GROUP The conference serves a broad national and international audience: Decisionmakers, experts, representatives of district heating companies around Europe, technical advisers, civil servants from municipalities, regions, central administrations and educational institutions. Don t miss this opportunity to hear about district heating as the sustainable heating solution for the future. 2

The plant yearly combusts app tons waste and produces app. 20 percent of the district heating in the Århus area. The incineration plant in Århus will present the connection between waste, power and district heating and how waste is recycled. The excursion will also include a visit to the nearby biogas plant - another district heating and power producer. Excursion 2 Renewable energy sources Excursion 2 will take place in Herning where the local provider of district heating will inform how a district heating system is handled with several plants of different sizes and with a high degree of renewable energy sources. In particular the use of biomass and biogas will be elaborated and finally the Danish tariff policies will be explained as well as how they affect the Danish district heating system. Heat plan Herning Secondly the Municipality of Herning will present the heat planning process and the utilization of district heating from a committed city s perspective. Herning Municipality has set a goal to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions by 35 % before 2030, and the development of the district heating system will play a key role in that respect. Excursion 3 Solar heat combined with a natural gas fired CHP-plant in Brædstrup 8000 m 2 solar ground mounted collectors for heat production was established in 2007 as the first large solar heating plant in the world to be combined with CHP. The CHPplant produces electricity to the electricity market and offers electricity regulation. District heating with wood chips in Hovedgaard Hovedgaard district heating plant has 2 wood chip boilers. The newest is from 2008 and has a capacity of 4 MW including fluegas condensation. Yearly average efficiency is more than 105%. Biogas in Foulum Foulum Biogas Plant is a 500 kw plant established in 2007 and located by the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Research Centre Foulum. The biogas plant is a full scale plant supplied with facilities for a.o. testing new biomass types. 10
7 CONFERENCE ON BEST PRACTICE SOLUTIONS IN DENMARK Presentation and excursion 4 CHP terms in the liberalized electricity market Power regulation (Brædstrup CHP as an example) Nordjysk Elhandel, Søren Rygaard, and heat pumps Advansor. Nordjysk Elhandel is one of the largest electricity trading companies in Denmark. Søren Rygaard will inform about the Danish CHP terms in the liberalized electricity market. Torben Hansen from heat pump company Advansor will inform about the possibilities for using heat pumps as a part of the heat production combined with electricity regulation services. Solar heat production The subsequent excursion offers a visual to the 8000 m 2 solar ground mounted collectors for heat production which was established in 2007 as the first large solar heating plant in the world to be combined with CHP. The CHP-plant produces electricity to the market and offers electricity regulation. Excursion to Energinet.dk The next visit applies Energinet.dk in Fredericia. Energinet.dk is responsible for the overall electricity and gas systems in Denmark. Representatives from the company will report on the functions of the company - including the liberalized markets.
